Guys, if anyone has questions about HJS at NYU, I'd be happy to answer.

Dear friends, I have a complicated decision right now ahead. I thought that nothing good will happen with my grad life, but now there are even two offers: JHU History, and NYU Hebrew and Judaic studies. I'm going to study one of the early modern Jewish philosophers and mystics who is almost forgotten by now. Where should I apply? I have a very good set of personal connections with JHU (my current supervisor may be also moving to JHU), but NYU seems to be very interested in me and I would like to "start it all over again". I almost set up my mind to NYU, but maybe you could offer me an advice. I will be thankful for any advice, endorsement or just for any word of support (I feel strangled). I decided to make my decision by today.

And special thanks about the Yiddish Center! I'll try to visit it! @sjoh197 thank you! I was living in Russia and sometimes you get there the same impression: why all this divergence bear one name? I must admit that I've heard many stories about stereotypical Russian scholars who got to US and because they don't know how to behave quickly got problems (there are tons of such stories; maybe an anthropologist should write a work on this topic). I thought as you do: be nice and don't harass other people borders, but I couldn't help not to ask) Originally I'm from Latvia, and there everything is quite "cold". You don't expect people to be very close and for me Israel is "too harassing" in some way. Personal space is set nearer that in Latvia. On the other hand, religious people sometimes may be even more distanced. So I think I've went through some sort of "school" here. But thank you for the advice! Hi! I'm accepted to NYU and I'm going to move to US. I have a Russian/European/Israeli background and I've never been to US. I have many American friends here (in Israel) but I expect that it is very different there (in US). I'm both thrilled and quite intimidated. What would you recommend to me and people like me who are going to live in US as grad students? What to expect? How to prepare? What are the dos and donts? I will be thankful for any advice given. (I hope I'm asking a right question in the right place; if not so, please delete this message. Sorry!)

No, you're right Thank you very much for your advice! I'm going to leave Jerusalem so for me it's important to find a proper balance: I would not like to find myself in a "small Israel" (I'm trying to run away from "bigger Israel"), but to have a Jewish community nearby would be perfect. Dear friends, I'm admitted by NYU and they give a ~27k stipend to live on. Please tell me the truth, if I want to live by my own (like, renting a studio or 1br + salon), I'll have to live in a very bad and far neighborhood or there is a possibility to find an apartment relatively close to campus? I've seen many interesting ads on craiglist, but I've got an impression that most of them are scams. How people search for an apt in NY? Which services are reliable? Should I contact the "student housing" organisations? Than you for any advice!

I wrote them (to their academic coordinator), and they replied, that they haven't moved to the waitlist yet, and I have to wait a little more... Hope that this will work out. Maybe, I will email my POI the next week at 13th and I will ask them about my chances. Thanks again!

Once a week? Wow, no, I think they will hate me if I do so. But thanks for an answer! Probably, the truth is in between and I should write them at least now.

Dear friends, I'm waitlisted and now the deadline comes closer. I haven't heard anything from my university since February. Should I write them and remind that I'm interested in their offer? Or should I simply wait till the DAY X? I really don't know what to do now. I hope that this thread is important not only for me, but also for a bunch of members of our waitlist purgatory club...

Hi, is anybody here who is accepted to WUSTL's history and is going to turn down their offer? For now this is my only possibility to get to a decent PhD this year...

To those who wait for JHU — yes, I suppose there are bad news. At least I'm rejected. I mailed my POI, and he wrote me about my rejection. Still we both hope for History dept admission of wait-list. Please, please, if you're Hopkins history going to decline the offer, please decline it! I'd might be in, and waiting a is very painful process.

Let's reject them a priori!!!

Wow! Fingers crossed for you! I hope you will be there. UCSB is an important place, but I'd like to be more at Hopkins. Still, I have HUJI acceptance, and even some funding was eventually allocated for me... if I work there as a programmer at completely different field. So, this acceptance is not a serious thing.

hi! UCSB: I mailed them on a different occasion (which was only an excuse to mail them ) and they told me that the committee is sitting and reviewing applications right now, and the letters will be sent out in March. According to another's guy POI, it must be by the end of this week. Contradiction is apparent Also, as far as I got it, UCSB has no "waves" of acceptance. According to the survey it's like that: a student is accepted — silence — acceptance — silence — rejection — silence.

good luck to both of us! who's your poi? if you wish, pm me! as far as I got, they don't have waves and everything there is pretty blurry. acceptance, weeks, acceptance, rejection, week — acceptance, but without funding.

Does anybody know when UCSB will make its decisions? I'm waiting and waiting; I understand that it should be soon, but maybe somebody's got magic insider info? (The same applies to Hopkins philosophy...) Meanwhile, I'm accepted in HUJI, but in Israel you have to pay by yourself, so it doesn't really count, unless my supervisor (or an alien, an archont or any lesser, but wealthy angel) will provide me with a stipend.

Ok, Princeton dumped me too. Nevertheless, my Alma Mater university — HUJI — accepted me at the same day. Honestly, POI at Princeton replied me so arrogantly and their letter was also as cold as snow, maybe it is better not to attend there at all. I
