The only thing keeping me from emailing or calling the Harvard department is that the website says decisions are usually released in the first two weeks of March. Frustrating since we saw the acceptance on 2/14 and the Sociology & Social Policy rejections on Friday 2/17.

I've been admitted to Cornell, waitlisted at Johns Hopkins and U Penn, and rejected by Berkeley. Harvard is the only program I haven't heard from. (Yes, I applied to only 5. Risky!)

I called Harvard and they said that all acceptances have been sent.

Probably University of Michigan. I suspect they may take longer than prior years, because, if you look, they admitted 20 new grads last year! (Versus ~10ish in prior years) This year will probably have fewer acceptances, so they're going to be even pickier, and thus take longer. Or that's my theory, anyway.

Actually, you're exatcly right. I heard from POI that they would be pickier this year because of last year's large cohort.

I know a few of us have been invited to visit Notre Dame, but I don't recall hearing about any rejections.

There have been rejections, one of which posted that the e-mail read: "The Graduate Admissions Committee recently reviewed applications to the graduate program in Sociology at Notre Dame and created a shortlist of prospective candidates based on academic record, experience, and fit with our program. We regret to inform you that you were not selected as one of those candidates..."

This makes me wonder what is the situation for those of us not contacted at all.

    Hi everyone,

I'm an international student (UK) at Oxford, I've just been accepted onto the two programmes I applied for, EAS at Yale and MAPSS at Chicago.

I've only been to Chicago briefly, it seemed really cool, but from what I've seen it seems like the course is better at Yale.

The only problem is I've been offered a 2k scholarship from Yale vs. a 40k scholarship from Chicago. I'm really praying they will offer me more funding at Yale, although my course director says this is unlikely (maybe because I'm an international student?).

Does anyone have any thoughts about the two campuses? Chicago seems like it has more going on, but I might be wrong?

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

    Best Regards,

    Alex

I'm currently a MAPSS student, and I'm all for the program, specially if you are considering a PhD after.

If the PhD is really your goal, my advice is to choose a MA program that will better get you there.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.

  5. (I tried to register a while back but my account was never approved. I hope that despite the size of this thread this will still reach people who might be helped by it.)

I applied to twelve programs at ten schools last year with what I felt was a strong record: a good GPA, highish GREs, strong letters, previous graduate courses, and a few co-authored papers in revision, submitted, or in preparation. I also had some work/research experience in a related field. That application cycle didn't go well.

I didn't get into a single PhD program.

I nearly began an expensive, unfunded master's program, thinking it would make the difference in subsequent PhD applications, but circumstances intervened and it wasn't possible. Instead of starting the master's program, I waited a year and tried again. I applied to more schools than last year, as well as to a wider range of schools in terms of both rankings and areas of emphasis. I felt I had tried to tailor my applications to each program last year, but this year I really agonized over each one, despite applying to so many more this time; that's my answer to the earlier application quality/quantity debate here. At their suggestion, I talked more with letter writers about how my materials and their letters should be framed so we would all be on the same page. Theory had been a big part of my statements last year, which I thought my record would support; but this year I dialed it back and focused on interests that aren't necessarily trendy but also aren't as marginalized.

This time I've gotten into several programs, including a couple that rejected me last year. Don't give up, guys. It's an expensive, difficult, isolating process, and waiting a year can be a huge blow emotionally (it was for me), but fashions, committees, and applicants' interests change from year to year. I stayed involved with research to stay sane and to buffer the urge to throw in the towel, and I tried to present my year off as a strength because I had time to really weigh whether this is what I want to do. I don't know which of these changes helped, or if this year is just different, but things are going better the second time around.

Thank you! That will keep my hopes up.

  6. Folks still waiting to hear from Harvard should check their application status online. I checked today, and apparently the decision has been available since Friday.

Anyone have any insight into how often people are accepted from the waitlist there? I'm sending an email to see if I can get a picture for it, but I figured I'd check here, too.

Can I ask where did you check the decision? I went to the application site with the status, and all it says is that my application was submitted and complete. Where did you see the decision?

    Same here.

  7. Socbr, since you're sharing, what was your AW? Honestly, I think your verbal is probably too low (my problem's the opposite, my math is way too low even though my other 2 scores are basically at the 99th percentile).. Your gpa being low is probably not a good thing either. But you are obviously qualified if not overqualified to excel at any top phd program worth it's reputation. I would try asking maybe 1 or more of your top choices that haven't worked out, including contacting the prof(s) you wanted to study with what the reasoning may have been to turn down your file. Every time i hear a story like this, I get more convinced the gre's time has passed, it's unfair to weigh it over someone writing scholarly books. Clearly. Do you have any options left for this current  cycle?  I've been  there, and was there till I got my one offer the other day and even it's got a problem. You can im me if you want. Boa sorte!

Breaks, thanks for your response. But yeah, that's what I meant to say: low verbal, low GPA, but good research experience and pubs. What I am wondering right now if the big problem is not having a MA or the GRE and GPA grades.

At this point my options are the Master programs. Fingers crossed.

  8. Feel like I gotta vent here for a moment. I'm feeling pretty despondent. I've received 3 rejections, and I only applied to the 5 schools where I felt my fit was strongest. I have excellent GRE scores and a publication in a sociological journal, which I wrote independently after undergrad. I know these are competitive programs but I thought I'd get into at least one of them. Not sure what else I can do to improve myself other than getting a MA first, which is what I'll aim to do now. Thanks for reading :/

I'm in the same boat. I'm trying to understand why I got rejected by all of the PhD programs I have applied for. My GRE is 157/157, and my undergrad GPA is not great, but that is because I have done a lot of relevant research in my undergraduate years, which have resulted in two co-authored books and some presentations (experience that I thought would balance the GPA and verbal grade). I feel that the LOR's and SOP's were also strong.

I thought that the professional experience would weight on my side. Well, now I am down to the lack of a good M.A (seems like people that got accepted to top 10 schools had one, right?) and will try to enhance the GRE.

Any other thoughts? Thanks for the help.

  9. Mine says the same, and I didn't apply for the MA (and actually am a grad of their MA program, so I can only assume they aren't going to offer me MA admission as a consolation prize like they do with some other PhD applicants...) I would just wait it out a little while. If the administrative assistants in that department say not all acceptances have been sent out, I'm inclined to trust them despite the mixed messages. Try not to think about it too much and good luck! :)

In mine, by the middle of the page there is a "Status Update", where the rejection letter is. But I guess you would have received an e-mail about it.

  10. Oh this is seriously driving me crazy...I don't think they usually call international students though.and looks like they haven't sent out emails yet. just don't have the courage to contact the department..

Yeah, it doesn't seem like the emails were sent, since there are only 3 acceptances by phone in the results. I am trying to call them for while, but there is no answer.
