  1. I just accepted my PhD offer to go as well! But am getting steadily more concerned about the cold.
  2. That's fair enough. I'm leaning pretty strongly towards it because, like you said, everyone just seems so supportive. I'm just wondering whether the prestige thing is even an issue, considering its top 20 in US News and even higher in other world rankings?
  3. Thanks! Could I ask why you're declining if it was so positive? Is it a fit issue, or more of a prestige thing?
  4. I'm trying to decide between Minnesota and McGill. General impressions of either?
  5. This is a definite positive. On a completely different note, but still touching graduate school in Canada, what are people's thoughts on the anthropology department at McGill? I've heard quite a bit about Toronto on this forum but very little about McGill.
  6. Agreed - where are you, Stanford interviewee? This process is gut wrenching! I want all my rejections to arrive just so I can sleep at night!
  7. Haha, thanks guys - I don't really know how to respond to her email? But YES, figure I deserve some spectacular news from somewhere else now!
  8. SO, my POI from Toronti just emailed me back, and said I've actually been wait listed, not accepted. Pretty uncool.
  9. DanJackson, following from what you said about doing a PhD in Toronto, I have no doubt the quality of education is excellent. I do wonder, however, about the academic network. Some people in my country have, perhaps unfoundedly, warned me about this - would a PhD in Canada limit one from an academic network in the US in the form of collaborations, conferences, future jobs, etc? I know Toronto has really solid prestige, so would that (in keeping with the so called 'academic caste system') put it in the same league as top-tier colleges in the US and transcend the geographical boundary? Or would it mostly depend on the networks of advisors? I know fit is ultimately what matters, but I'd appreciate any thoughts on this
  10. Yes, absolutely - I got the email about on hour ago (on a Sunday!) so tell your friends that there is clearly still hope. Maybe they do acceptances in waves?
  11. Kaitri, i PMed you about my POIs . Thanks for the detailed response about funding and living expenses - it's definitely a really important consideration. Is there a standard funding package or do they often vary? I haven't received any information about the package yet, so am waiting for that too. And I just received the email - haven't put it up on the results board yet. I was so sure I wouldn't get in too, with all the acceptances posted last week! Just goes to show that there is hope for us all yet!
  12. I just got an acceptance from Toronto! But now, based on what a lot of you have said, am entirely confused considering lower chances of funding opportunities for international students. I have an offer in Sociology from another university too (Minnesota), so this brings up all sorts of issues considering which discipline to pick as well. I'm grateful to have choices of course, but would appreciate any advice from all you wonderful people on this forum!
  13. Congratulations! Could I ask who your POI is and what your proposed topic is? Keeping my fingers crossed for an interview...
  14. Hey there - Hopkins interviewee, did your POI mention when decisions will be sent out? Any idea if all shortlisted candidates are interviewed?
