  1. Thanks for all the help guys. I'll get in contact with one of his students. I'll see if I can contact him in August right before I get there, the semester doesn't start until September 14th so I've got a bit of time before I have to pick classes.
  2. So I'm starting at the University of Waterloo in the fall. My advisor is a very busy man on sabbatical and has been since I applied and will be until December. Now shortly after applying and getting my acceptance his email response time was slow but I still got a response. I'd have to say since March or so I've sent 6 emails with no response. The one time he did respond in that time period I was coming up to look for housing and asked if he'd be free to meet, he said he'd check his calendar when he was in the office but I got no response after that. I just don't know what to do, the secretary has been helping me out with the logistical questions but I've been trying to ask him about the projects he has (he said I have my pick or them but I'd like more info on a couple before I decide) to no avail. I just don't know what to do. I'm an international student so calling would be difficult but not impossible, another new hiccup is that it's now summer break so I'm sure he's even more impossible to reach. This might not be a big deal and could be normal but it's causing me a lot of stress and I'm just worried about this whole situation and what it means for the couple of years ahead, though to be honest I'd rather have a non responsive advisor than one who won't talk to me because I have an irrational fear that he hates me. Help?
  3. Thank for the help guys. I got my stipend up to ~16k so I should be able to afford something nicer now. Good to know about the buses though
  4. Everyone thanks for the helpful responses. jenste : I am genuinely interested in SU more. The department is smaller and more tight knit and I really her advising style better. they make their decision this weekend so I'm on the edge of my seat until then.
  5. So I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I'm a student in the US looking to get my MSc in Earth Science. I applied to both University of Waterloo (Canada) and Syracuse University. I fell in love with Waterloo when I went to visit a couple of weeks ago. The facilities were amazing and the projects were really cool. This weekend I went to visit Syracuse University, again I fell in love with it. I loved the adviser, the students, and the projects (also the stipend is $6,000 more than Waterloo which is nice). Typically this would be a no brainer, accept Syracuse over Waterloo. Here is where the problem arises, I was accepted early to Waterloo and while US school typically allow you to decide by April 15th, Waterloo gave me 3 weeks. The deadline happened to be on the day I visited Syracuse. To be honest, when I was going I didn't think I'd like it so much so I wasn't prepared. After realizing I loved it I emailed my adviser at Waterloo and asked for a 2 week extension to hear from Syracuse. I hadn't heard back from him by that evening and since my offer expired at midnight I didn't want to take the risk of not getting into Syracuse and losing my offer from Waterloo. I accepted Waterloo's offer and my status is currently: "intent to matriculate." I sent a follow-up email asking him to ignore my previous email, that I had accepted, and I looked forward to talking with him about the future. Sunday I received a response from the adviser saying I could have extra time (and a follow-up email when he read my follow-up email.) I'm kicking myself because I could have had that extra 2 weeks to hear from Syracuse. After this long back story here is my question: Is there a way to rescind my acceptance to Waterloo if I get accepted into Syracuse? I think it may be possible because, while he replied too late, he did say I could have the extra 2 weeks to respond. I realize I'd be burning a bridge with Waterloo but I would be happier at Syracuse (though not necessarily unhappy at Waterloo.) Can anyone help?
  6. I've been accepted to UW and I'm unsure about the housing. The stipend I'm looking at is only like 9k a year right now (I'm trying to discuss getting more) but that just seems like it would be impossible to live on. I don't want to live more than a 15 min drive from campus and I have a cat so that is making things more challenging. Does anyone think this is doable?
