  1. Hi all,

I currently attend Hunter MFA and is a first semester that got accepted for Spring 2016. It is usual that you are not asked of the deposit until September or October by mail. They do require a check mailed in or checks that is brought into the office by person. The physical acceptance letter is not sent until later on.

I am also international. You will need to take at least 9 credits every semester to be considered full time student. And unfortunately international students cannot do part time like others.

I hope this help. I have Carrie Moyer, Drew Beattie and Valerie Jaudon this semster if anybody wants to know more about them.

Hello I haven't received a letter yet but was accepted via email for Spring 2016!

I'm definitely going! I just wish I was able to call for more info on Spring admits

Hi CandidCaleb, did you get any information about making a deposit? I am freaking out now because i have not heard anything since i got my acceptance letter for Spring 2016.

No student ID, no mail (except a piece of paper stating that I am accepted for Spring), no link and no nothing! What do I do? I am international and freaking out in HK...

Any Spring semester friends got the same problem?

  3. Wzhao sounds like you made your decision, you may just need to give yourself permission to follow through. But it's a big decision so you should think it over as much as you need to.

Yes!! TEM 33056 I have finally decided. Hunter here I come:) my name is Wai Ying, and i am so excited to meet you guys at the school next spring!

  4. Anyone know where we should send our transcripts for a Hunter? And anyone also got accepted to Spring and know when and how we should pay for the $250 deposit?

I am also international if anyone know what I should do about my visa. Thanks so much!!

  5. I mean Parsons is a very good school, but the best things I hear about them are usually in regard to design majors? I have some friends that go there for fashion design and graphic design and they really love it.

I honestly can't really recommend one way or another for you though! It really depends on what financial aid you get, how you felt about the studio spaces and facilities, the instructors etc. The spring vs. fall thing may be a thing to consider too?

Lol I'm totally not being helpful at all. I mean I have been excited about Hunter since I went to a thesis show of theirs last fall and went to their open studios. The vibe of the community seemed engaging and interdisciplinary, and I saw a lot of art being made that I loved. Plus, you really cannot beat the price tag associated with it for a school with studio spaces that are in downtown Manhattan.

I wish you luck in deciding though! Both are great schools, though I have had a few teachers who went to Hunter for their MFA and they always talk about how much they loved their time there.

Deep inside I know I love Hunter much much more for the kind of community it creates. Sigh. OMG I can't believe I am kind if freaking out about decision making :(

  6. On interview day, they explained that there was no hierarchy for fall and spring acceptances but that they divided the groups up according to who they thought would work well with each other (artwork wise) in terms of the final show.

Thank you for letting me know! I guess I was a little late, and hadn't heard anything about spring admissions. Do you have an idea about how many people get in? Someone said 48 in total with 24 for each semester?

  7. Hi everyone!

I got in for Spring 2016, but all of you seem to be Fall? :) I'm kind of bummed to hear about how little funding the university seems to offer from this discussion, but I'm happy regardless because Hunter is still a really good deal. I'll be accepting the offer, so hopefully I'll see you in person next year?

Hey cococo! I am also accepted for Spring, but isn't sure about going yet:( I know Parsons is not listed higher on ranking, and that I was much more impressed with the open studio at Hunter. But I still couldn't yet talk myself down to accept Hunter... What would you think?

  8. If you google hunter residency if links you to the forms for applying as a new York resident. The most valuable thing is to find an address to have certain mail sent to. Also, you should start the process during the summer because the one year of residency has to be completed before the semester starts.

Hi TEM33056, thank you for letting me know the residency... Although I am in fact an international student currently living in Jersey City... I guess this isn't the residency for me:( do you have any other thoughts?

Also... Disregarding tuition issues, would you pick parsons or Hunter?

  9. Regarding Hunter Spring admit, If you are going in at Spring term, maybe that could give you a chance to establish New York residency for in-state tution? I'd look into it! Congrats to everyone!

NYTreader thank you for your insight. I think it might not be a bad idea going in one semester later. Do you have any residency suggestions? Also... Maybe it sounds dumb, anyone also debating between Parsons and Hunter?

  10. hey wzhao, out of curiosity, what did SAIC offer you exactly? why did they offer you acceptance to their undergraduate program? sorry if you posted already, I don't remember seeing anything about that kind of offer in the forum.

Hey onbeingblue, I got the same offer from SAIC. I think the prior degree program is recommended to those coming from a non-arts background. It's similar to a transfer student, and you can earn a BFA in 2 years or so. I've decided to pass.

Hello onbeingblue, like flawed mentioned, the school offered us admission to BFA, and allow us to graduate earlier depending on credits we have earned from undergrad. I decided to pass as well, just because I am reluctant to get another Bachelor's degree.

  11. Hey guys that are Interviewing for Hunter,

What are your check in times? it seems like there are some who are interviewing early in the afternoon and some who are interviewing later. I thought they met with all of the interviewees as a group first.

I dont think we meet as a group. We probably meet after individual interviews, but not required.

  12. hi wzhao

are you also going to bring ur old works that u submitted thru slideroom?

yestoyeahhhh, i think I would mostly bring work i show on slideroom, because most of them are done within a year.

Just for people who are still wondering what to bring, like I am lol. Here is what one of my professors from college, who has a mentor at Hunter College wrote me when I asked him for advise: "I think for your images you want to show your skills, your work ethic, and your conceptual but interdisciplinary focus. Hunter is an amazing program and they have people who care about whether you know how to formally use materials AND have a conceptual backbone."

I guess we have to interpret this ourselves?

  13. hi wzhao,

I will have to re-read the email with the instructions. It sort of freaked me out...lol...and made me more nervous. Yes about images, but regarding the quality, I will do my absolute best, but to have it all ready in a week is a bit much to ask for super-high quality images.

    Definitely nervous.

    Have you heard from Columbia?

I know... I just got some proof of my images and I am not too happy! Freaking out!!

And no I have never heard from Columbia. I am not sure about the slideroom rumor, but I still have the title as 2015 Painting MFA.

OMG I am starting to doubt myself. :(

  14. Yep, prior degree is what they call it. The number of semesters may vary depending on your transcript. Those with more credits acknowledged can complete the program in less than 2 years.

The merit scholarship ($5000 per year) was a decisive factor for me. I simply would not be able to afford that since I had initially planned on a 2-year program. If you receive other MFA offers, I think you should take it.

Thank you for your insight flawed. Hopefully I get some other offers as well lol!

  15. I thought any other images would be in addition to the slide room images, but I was a little confused. Did you ask anyone?

I think maybe this is all up to us. The school perhaps encourages new work to be shown, but I think the email might have also implied that the committee does not have computers with them to see images, and hence we have to provide them.

I am bringing few more prints with me to show them my process to new work. I would expect interviewers asking us about our thought process and future plans. So let's all relax and show the best of us!
