  1. I have a high 2:1 B.Sc. in maths (close to first class) and I have been offered a place to study M.Sc. in applied maths in Imperial and UCL..The year after my masters I want to start phd studies.. Also my masters' exam period is during the third academic term and consequently a few months after the dates I will have to submit a Phd application. As a result, I won't be able to present any graduate level results in my application. In this case, do you think I might encounter problems because of my B.Sc. grade? I think it might be weak for these universities.. ( or others in Uk top 10) Also, will I have a problem with the funding ? Is it possible to find adequate money for 3-4 years? Does anyone have experience in a respective situation? Thanks in advance.. any thoughts are welcome
  2. I have an offer for a Masters in Mathematics from Technical University of Munich.. and I have also applied in Bonn and Berlin Mathematical School (this one is for Phd).. Does anyone have experience of these universities/cities ? Which program is considered the best? (I do not have a preference for a specific program's content. ) Which other universities could I consider? Any thoughts or advice would be helpful..
  3. Does anyone have any experience on how universities assess phd applicants?? Which of the following would be a more reasonable choice so to pursue a phd in a top10 UK univ?? On the one hand, i could do my master degree there ( but apply only after 3-4 months from the beginning of master), while on the other hand i could attend a strong nonUK programme and apply during the 2nd year of my master (so the university will be able to assess me based on more facts).. What else should i bear in mind?? Any thoughts or advise would be very usefull..
  4. Hi , i have the following problem and i would really like your opinion.. In the September of 2014 I concluded my bachelor and during the past year I deliberately chose to leave a gap between my undergrad and graduate studies.. Also, from now and for the next 9 months i was scheduled to enter the army.. However, this responsibility just cancelled and now i am confused what to do, since one more year away from my studies seems to much to me.. I have the following options : either to apply in November for Phd in US OR to apply for a masters degree in Germany or Netherlands, which begins in the spring term.. Any advice or thoughts are welcome.. What would you consider?? Also, regarding the second option, i will probably pursue to do a Phd in Uk.. Is it feasible to begin it in the middle of an academic year?? Thanks in advance

    Phd in Europe

Hi, i would like to set the following questions and i think that someone who has completed a phd in europe can offer his advice.. I have found that most of the funding organizations (outside of the university) offer support for 3 or 3.5 years.. So , what happens if i need more time to complete my research? Will i have to fund it (with my money) or are there any alternatives ?? Also, if my professor at university offers me funds , will this last until my research is completed? Is there a possibility after some years to inform me that i will have to support my research from other sources ?? (I have just fininshed my undergraduate studies in maths and i would like to know some basic information about phd's )
  6. Hi , has anyone lived/studied in Lausanne?? I am thinking of applying in EPFL and it would be very helpful if someone could give an estimation regarding the cost of living.. Also , how easy is to live in this city if you speak English only ??

    Bonn , Germany

That's very good news!! Thanks a lot
  8. I am thinking of applying to the university of Bonn for a masters in mathematics.. However , it concerns me the issue of language ,as my German are in an amateur level, and the adaption to the university's enveronment.. The programm is in English but i suppose that the non-German students must be much less than the German.. So how easy will it be to socialize (in and outside of the university) ?? Are there enough European students?? Is the use of the German language inevitable beyond the classes?? ( I know that there are respective programms in Munich and Berlin , but these are much bigger cities and meeting people who do not speak German in a good level and are in a situation like me is much easier.. Also , friends who live in Berlin have confirmed that for me.. But i expect Bonn to be much different.. and that's why I am asking.. ) I am willing to improve my German but because of the fact that i am during my military service i cannot dedicate time to this task.. The first months in Bonn concern me the most..
  9. Hi , which two would you choose between LSE , UCL , Edinburgh and St.Andrews ?? I have been trying to narrow my choices but it is very complicated.. I know that the London universities are prestigious enough but the other two are higher in many math-lists.. Could you give me any advise and explain your choice?? Any information would be usefull.. If i had to choose i would choose LSE's programm , but i am concerned whether LSE's reputation can justify the high cost of living in London and the high tuition fees. (The content of the courses is applied mathematics and statistics but i am not sure which one i prefer.. so do not take this aspect under consideration )
  10. No , i want to apply for the winter semester.. Sorry if i didn't write it clearly.. The problem is that the competition will be very intense in England/Netherlands in April(when the application period for Germany begins) , so in these two i want to apply in November. So in case i apply to England/Netherlands i will have an answer from the university much sooner (2months) than the date that i will submit my application in Germany.. So is it possible to accept an offer from a university(england) and some months later to apply to an other one (germany) ?? And in case they accept me in germany ; can i choose that one and inform the English Univ. that i am not going ??
  11. Hi i have just finished my bachelor in Maths and in November i am thinking of applying for a master degree in England, Germany, Switzerland and Netherlands. I would like to get some information regarding the following questions and any information/opinion would be very useful and welcome. a1) In case i won't be accepted in England will it be feasible to pursue a job in England or US after my master ?? ( Unfortunately i can not afford a degree in US) Has anyone of you done anything similar? However, i understand that staying in your master's country for some time might be more reasonable. a2) When a company assesses my job application do they consider my master's grades ? Which factors are take into account? A few universities in Germany won't assess my application before April. However, i don't want to submit the rest of my applications in April because the competition will be more intense in comparison with November. Is there anything i could do so that to apply to Germany too ?? How much time does a university offer me until i have to answer to their offer?? Did anyone of you have the same problem?? Thanks for reading...
  12. Hi , i would like to share the following thought with you and any information is welcoming (and very useful). In December i am thinking of applying for a master degree in universities primarily located in England and Switzerland, and my master will be in maths. I have been trying to find a way to strengthen my application, as my overall degree score is not as good as i think it should be for applying in the top universities of these countries ( such as ETH or Imperial ) (Although my grades on the courses related to my master are high enough) So i am thinking of having the GRE test (even if it is not required for any application and it is not mentioned in any math department of any university). Do you know if there are students in the same situation as mine , who had the exam and were benefited because of it? Is a high GRE score considered in the evaluation process?
