so, i had this very very interesting rejection situation with Washington State Univ today... I called the grad coordinator and he told me that the primary POI I wanted to work with (Dr. Anderson) suddenly resigned from the dept, and got a new job, so the Univ does not have any East Asian study prof anymore (although Dr. Kawamura is around, her focus was on US diplomatic history). The grad coordinator even told me that the dept was told about her resignation around Christmas (he said they were shocked about it as she was on a tenure track) and now they are frantically tryin to find a replacement asap coz they cannot even offer some E. Asian courses this semester...... Honestly, idk what to make of this rejection but im glad that i was already admitted to another institution coz i really think that this was such a weird and bad luck....any thoughts on this anyone? has anyone of our fellow applicants had this kinda experience so far??

interesting topic! First, for both my B.A. and M.A. programs (both are two different institutions), I was the only Japanese and international student who majored in History. For Ph.D., I got accepted to Univ Hawaii at Manoa so far and my primary advisor told me that the program had not had Japanese student in a real long while (although there are some intl. students from other countries but they also take up very few percentage as a whole)

Congrats Ashiepoo, Herstorian, and Heimat!!!

hey, does anyone wanna claim the title of Univ Hawaii Manoa acceptance today? (it said that it was an intl. student like I am, but labeled as an "I" rather than "U" unlike me). PM me whoever that person is coz I also got accepted there too and I wanna get in touch w/ new students!

Ashiepoo72, the "Snowpocalypse" reminds me of the time I was in Maryland for my undergrad in the early 2010. Do you guys remember how it snowed like hell especially around D.C. area, just like current E. Coast situation? My college got closed for more than a week and dining hall workers stayed in so that they could cook meal for us (but literally you couldn't get to the d-hall from a dorm, which is like less than half a mile coz of snow and blizzard). you know what, thank god i'm now livin in Southern CA so that I don't have to deal with current snow storms lol

just got accepted to Univ of Hawaii at Manoa for Ph.D.!!!!!! so, 1/7 so far (Rej: Northwestern and Indiana Univ; Pending: Claremont Grad Univ, Washington State Univ, UCSC, and SUNY at Albany). Any Univ of Hawaii accepted colleagues here?
-
yea that's true and I really appreciate cheers coz i really do need one now. I really wanted to get in there coz of Dr. Laura Hein (I even referred to her work in my MA thesis) but I guess something wasn't quite "right" or "fit" enough...
-
i'm really sorry ashiepoo72, and I got rejected from Northwestern Univ as well... (1 rej, 6 in progress)

hang in there rnw, brush it off and you'll hear good news soon!

I actually read and used it for my MA thesis actually! and i mean, that's why I applied to Indiana (coz you have two godly figures Dr. Bodnar and Dr. Linenthal).

for some reason, i often don't read historical secondary sources for my pastime (and plus my focus is US-JP comparative view on collective memory of a-bomb so there aren't many US books (i know that there are many journals) (is there any book suggestion for that topic?) and i buy and read Japanese 2nd sources only when I'm back home (im from JP)). However, as for pastime, i read lots of novels, now mostly US but i read some JP books. I'm an avid fan of Michael Chrichton, and from last October I read, Gone Girl, Before I Go to Sleep, The Giver, Still Alice, Atomic Box (a japanese novel), and I'm currently reading The Wind-up Bird Chronicle (original 3-volumed Japanese version).

Hi my MA focus revolved around US-JP comparative view on victimhood (collective memory) of a-bomb, but i also do know a bit of JP-German comparative scholars as well. Why not search for Dr. Susan Crane at Univ Arizona? or Ohio State Univ and Temple Univ? i think her focus is on Germany war collective memory. For my potential phd topic, im tryin to use much more definition from criminology, sociology, and psych (in terms of memory/identity construction). If you have any questions, just hit me up, im always welcome for questions

ashiepoo72, thnx for the comment! Yea i applied to UCSC coz of those profs. (but i know that Christy's gonna be on leave from fall to spring i think) What's the hist. dept. like there? Have you had any class w/ Yang, Christy, Aso, or Lonetree before? btw, i realized that 3 of our prospective schools are the same lol

first time posting here. I'm from Japan and I finished up history BA and MA in 2012 and 2014 respectively in (Washington College) MD and (CSUN) CA. As i'm reading thru, your guys' comments are keepin me feel calm coz honestly right now, i'm soooo nervous for any notifications. My main field of focus is the Pacific War and Public history, specifically collective memory of atomic bombing and the war. I applied to Indiana Univ, Northwestern Univ, UCSC, Univ Hawaii at Manoa, SUNY at Albany, Washington State Univ, and Claremont Graduate Univ. So far the past two tries of ph.d apps didn't go so well so i honestly just wanna get in to whatever-ranked programs lol. I saw some members who are also applying to the same schools so whoever applyin, hit me up coz we may become colleagues this Fall!
