I lived in Philadelphia for a few years. I really liked the Queen's Village and Old City Area. If you can afford to spend a little more $$ Old City is nice. The only thing is that parking is a pain. But if you're on a graduate student's budget, I'd live in Queen's Village. It's a few blocks south of South Street and its safe, quiet, and very cute. Plus, it's more residential than living right in center city. There are lots of good restaurants as well. And there are buses that will take you to Penn, Drexel, or Penn within 20-30 minutes.
  3. Thanks for the update. Congrats on winning a fellowship!

I've seen the rooms in the Grad College and their kinda small. I would say the rooms are comparable to college dorm rooms. But for the price, it's not that bad. I guess it depends on the type of social life you're looking for, the amount of personal space you need/want, and the amount of $$$ you want to spend on living accommodations.
  5. Does anyone have an idea of how many alternates there are? I'd like to know so that I can determine if I should get my hopes up of winning a fellowship.
  6. I also received my letter today. I didn't win an award, but I did make it onto an alternatives list. If anyone turns it down, then MAYBE I'll win one. As of now, I'm an honorable mention. But my question is, why would anyone decline the award?
  7. I have 27K for 5 years plus health insurance and more $$ if I TA or do any other type of administrative work for the school.
  8. Another helpful tip is to have as many eyes as possible read it. Preferably, people you know (friends, family, professors). They will be able to tell you if your personal statement is genuine or too cliche.
  9. What's the deal with Emory? Has anyone heard anything?
