Fall 2010 Admission Results

Best of luck to you! You have some choices at least, but I hope Rochester works out for you. Another week of no news on my end. I literally am going crazy over here. Thank god we decided the Princeton posts were fake, otherwise I would really be pulling my hair out! -

A second UPenn acceptance is up. Considering the campus is closed that seems weird, plus last year acceptances went out the third week of Feb. Then again, people can email from home too. I guess I won't believe it (or the two Cornell acceptances) until they get legitimately claimed here. -

This is exactly why I don't want to discount the post. Then again I logged into my app and there is no information besides "Submitted" next to application status. In the past all acceptances have been by email, and rejections by website. So I'm praying its a good sign. I really really really hope its a hoax. -

Yeah that would be good...I suppose the mild excitement I get opening my inbox is creating some sort of exercise for my heart though. Woo now I can avoid the gym! -

Heh. I don't think I'm creative enough to get a pair of those shoes- I'd much rather buy the shoes already "designed" or whatever. So I basically have my email account open and ready to go. Anytime I see a little (1) pop up I flip out, check it immediately and am instantly disappointed. I hate how many stupid non-application related emails I get a day! Yeah, these next two days of working from home are gonna suck lol. -

Haha this is probably true. But at least you know you have a back up plan should all else fail! Right now all I have is to try and find a job- yeah that's gonna go real well in this economy. And true Oxon, your mild heart attack is good proof of that -

Don't worry! One- I'm pretty sure you will get in, two- yeah you're going to have some great options otherwise. It's really annoying on the other hand that it takes so long to hear back- Berkeley is the first school I applied to that is notifying and not having personally heard from them is just adding to my annoyance and overall stress level. -

Yeah that's what I was referring to when I posted. I agree, it's a terrible joke. Too bad the results page can't actually be regulated, it would cut down on a lot of spam and tension overall. Ah well. -

It looks like the Harvard post was a hoax- a really really mean and uncalled for hoax. People need to be a little bit more sensitive to our hearts Also- cpaige I don't know why people keep voting your posts down, but I've apparently run out of my positive votes for the day on the board otherwise I would help you out! -

Congrats to all the Berkeley acceptances!! I didn't get an email so I am going to assume I'm out. I wasn't a very good fit, I only really applied to work with a certain professor, so I guess it makes sense. Let's hope the rest of us hear some good news this week I'm thinking (hoping lol) NYU and Yale... -

My guess (hope) is Yale, NYU and Cornell, based on past admissions results. -
What school are you excited to hear from?

Agreed! I don't mind hearing negative news even- I would just like to know one way or another so I can move on haha. -

I guess I am basing my opinion of the field off of my understanding of it- true there may be options about university policy I haven't considered. At the age of 21 I guess it may be early to be thinking about a family and TT positions, but with my current knowledge of "the world" l'm just consider where I want to be ten years from now, and I don't mean just in terms of a career. This very well may change as I progress through my degree and gather a deeper understanding of how the field works. People can change their mind, I'm just stating my opinion at this point in time. As far as the environment of schools go, I guess no one can make claims to what a school is really like unless they go there. However, from my discussion with recent PhD grads, the general atmosphere of this thread, and frankly even the majority consensus at PSJR (maybe not the best source I admit), students at a top ten program are highly competitive. This can be both a good and bad thing- I guess it really depends upon how an individual fits in at a university. I suppose whatever distrust in cohorts at top ten programs I have can in part be attributed to my annoyance with over-the-top competition that I've experienced too much and frankly let overrun my life. This is part of the reason why I didn't apply to law school- because I would have immersed myself in competition in a very unhealthy way. I guess the point of my posts was just to state my opinion that top-ten is not the end all be all. Some people might like to teach at a low ranked SLAC because of location, research opportunities or other personal reasons, and one does not necessarily need a top-ten degree to achieve that. I didn't intend to attack those who hold the rankings in high regard if that's how it came across, to each her/his own I always say Edit: Sorry guys- off topic again because of me this time. -

Well said. Your whole post actually, but I don't want to quote the whole thing. I think people assume that everyone in this degree wants to be teaching or researching at an R1, and for some of us, that's not the ultimate goal. As a female, I plan to have a family and a life outside of work, and being tenure track at Harvard may not be the best option for me in 6-7 years. Going to a "lower" ranked program doesn't really bother me because of that. Moreover, I'd rather be with a cohort that's collaborative than competitive and childish. Also, this is the results thread- for posting results or info when results are expected. Maybe issues of rank or what cpaige should do with her life (no offense meant to you of course, its just an example of off topic conversation) can move to a separate thread? Just a friendly suggestion -

Congrats everyone! And congrats to you SuddenlyParanoid... you are doing really great! Here's to hearing from Yale soon- but hopefully not tomorrow since historically it's their rejection day. -

You calling would be really nice of you, but honestly I think people who applied should call themselves. I feel a bit weird thinking students are calling around for someone else, and it seems a bit strange. It's hard to explain why I feel this way, but something just doesn't feel right about having someone who didn't even apply call. If I get a chance, I will call tomorrow morning- there is no guarantee they will ask for my name, SSN, home address etc to "blacklist" me from an acceptance. On the off chance they do ask, one can easily provide a fake name as well. And if I do call you can bet your bottom dollar (whatever the hell that means) that I will be blocking my number and will have a fake name at the ready. Because, let's face it, at the end of the day we're all really paranoid right now. -

Congrats Jollywag! And thanks to cpaige for getting that Harvard information. Looks like we will get notification as the same time as the past four years- at the end of the month. Since it's now six pm on the east coast, I think its safe to say we are not hearing from Yale today. Based on past results, and the emails that went out this week I really don't think we will hear until next week. Let the waiting game continue... -

Thank you thank you! Be sure to keep us updated... and PolisciFTW....someone had a berkeley acceptance in their sig? I really hope those results weren't true- considering they were posted when the offices were closed. This whole process is definitely frustrating. I wonder if all this information regarding admissions hurts more than it helps. -

That is true. I'm still waiting to see someone claim them, all though it is possible that no one that is accepted is also a forum member. And I agree with you rml015, it would be nice to start hearing- whichever way it goes. -

A second Harvard admit on the results page- until someone claims them here I call bs. Looking over the past four cycles, all admits to the PhD occurred in late Feb. with rejections happening around or after that. So basically I'm not worried. (Okay yes I am, but that's just the main emotion I've been feeling since I finished all apps, so nothing unusual really.) -
Sadly enough, I'm expecting to wake up tomorrow with decisions from all my schools...even though I know how improbable that is I think at least in my field, for my schools, it will be another week or two...but yay for it being this month! (I hope hehe)
