  1. Hi, I was wondering if anyone who has been accepted to St John's (or just knows more about it than me) can explain how the 48 credits pan out over the 5 semesters? It seems low compared to other programs (66 at Brooklyn college). If you're going for the TSSLD, how many credits / how much time does it add? I'm actually still waiting to hear from them - I called this morning and was told it could be as late as late April before I hear anything - seems so weird as they seem to have been accepting people since late Feb.
  2. Hi, They say that you're supposed to login and check for messages everyday, but it's pretty much up to you when you view presentations or chats (there are a few scheduled web chats, but aside from initial chats at the start of semester, students are not required to be present at those, they are recorded and you can listen afterwards). Most of the courses have audio or video of the professors which enhances the written material - and they encourage (actually usually require) that you take part in discussions with classmates. This was my first experience with online learning, so I don't have anything to compare it to, but overall I think it's been great. Good luck!
  3. Hi, I am in my final (and 4th) semester on the New Paltz post bacc program - I've just been accepted at my top choice grad program and I think that is down in part to the great program run at New Paltz. I did 3 courses in my first semester and 2 per semester after that - it was a lot of work, but not 50-60 hours per week, that seems like a bit of an overestimate. I did all my work in the evenings and at weekends and managed to get it all done, so you should be fine doing it while working (the majority of people on course have day jobs). I did work pretty much every evening and weekend day during that first semester. The tests are mostly online - the questions / timing are set up in such a way that even though they're 'open book' you still need to have studied to do well. There are a few final / midterms which require you to go to a proctored site, or use an online proctoring service. Good luck! I think it's a great program
  4. Just to follow up on this - I emailed the program director at Touro today, she said they'd be sending out the first round of acceptances in mid April ... they're delayed due to just moving to a new location.
  5. Anyone been in touch with St John's or Touro about when we can expect to hear from them? I've seen a few people were accepted to St John's in Feb and early March, but it only seemed to be a few ...
  6. Here's another article on this topic ... http://www.asha.org/Publications/leader/2008/080527/080527c.htm
  7. ok - this is all really useful info - thanks for your responses! I've read that federal Perkins loans are 100% forgivable after working in a title 1 school for 5 years as an SLP. But I was wondering if anyone knows, are Perkins Loans the kind normally taken for a teaching degree? and are they hard to qualify for? Here's the link with the details: https://studentaid.ed.gov/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/charts ( Full-time speech pathologist with a master's degree working in a Title I-eligible elementary or secondary school (for service that includes August 14, 2008, or began on or after that date) I've just been accepted to a very expensive program, which, in addition to the childcare costs I'll be incurring is going to make for a huge loan .... the thought of it is making me queasy!
  8. Hi, This may seem like a silly question, but I was wondering if someone could explain how the financial aid / scholarship system works? I am from Britain and live in the States now, so this is my first experience with the American system (when I got my original BA 15 years ago in the UK, tuition was free and cost of living loans/ grants were done through the college). I see a few people on this forum talking about being offered funding so I wondered how that all works? Do you have to ask each specific college about that? Is it means tested or done on merit? I filed my FAFSA form in January, but I'm just not sure if I should be doing anything else? I know there are also separate scholarships available such as the NYC Teach one, which you have to apply for separately .... Also, I've also read about federal loans being forgivable if you work in the public school system in a high need area after a certain amount of years - but are the federal loans hard to qualify for? Sorry for all the questions - as a foreigner I find the whole thing baffling! Thanks to anyone who help me understand it all!
  9. Hi, I just got accepted also! - I'd love to hear what people think about it. I didn't make it to their fall open day and wish I had now - did anybody go? I'd really love to know what kind of schedule they follow? (as in how many days per week they have classes / clinics and what time of day they usually are? - I'm going to have to figure out what my childcare needs will be if I accept). So relieved to finally have an offer though!
  10. This is a great thread, with some really interesting insights. I've seriously considered this route too - I'm in a similar situation to you WisconsinNite99: I'm a mom too, but my son will be starting PreK in the fall so working as a paraprofessional if more of an option for me as the childcare will be mostly free. But, with my age (37) I'm really keen to just get on with my career and not sure if want to wait around earning terrible money and try for SLP grad school next year. Are there any other related school-based positions or routes to think about? What about school literacy specialists? I have a friend who worked for 10 years as a special Ed teacher in NYC, she does not recommend it from her personal experience. But as Squeeze pointed out, it's a personal thing and very depended on the administration you're working in ...
  11. Hi, Did you know that ASHA now accepts CLEP tests for the sciences and AP for stats requirements? BUT, some schools do not accept them, so it's best to check with them. I took the Natural Sciences exam, which is 6 credits and (hopefully) covers both science requirements. I'm also hoping to avoid doing stats this summer, so am going to look in to the AP exam for that ... but it all depends if I end up getting accepted anywhere!
  12. Hi - my stats are: undergrad gpa: 3.4 (12 years ago), post bacc gpa: 3.8. gre: v: 160, Q: 144, AW: 4 The interview is next week. In case anyone else is interested, I just searched the archive from last year and another poster who did the interview last year said there was a tour from faculty, an essay and a group discussion moderated by a faculty member.
  13. Hi, I just heard I have an interview at Brooklyn College, CUNY next week. Anyone interviewed here before? any insight about what to expect? Thanks!
  14. Hello, I'm currently awaiting news to hear about my fall '15 applications and am pretty anxious about it. To ease my anxieties I'm trying to think about a 'plan B' if I don't get in anywhere. If I don't get in this year I'm thinking about looking at online programs and pursuing this path online so I can work at the same time. Can anyone share info about online part-time programs? The ones I know about are Nova and University of Wisconsin Eau Claire - are there any others? I'm in New York State, would I be able to get NYS licensure if I got my degree out of state? Also, in terms of getting relevant work experience, should I be pursuing a position at a special needs school? I think my main obstacle to getting in this year will be my lack of hands on work experience - I'm a career changer (former broadcast new producer) and am a parent to a special needs child, but I don't have any true 'work experience' in the field. Thanks for any advice!
