Georgetown MPP Admitted 2015
economixed_policy replied to brmoran's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Hi thanks for this - very much the sort of information I was looking for. I understand that the funding offers is a rolling process, with decisions to be announced until the end of this month. I'm interested in Georgetown but have full tuition from another programme I'm also interested in (below). Eventually for me it comes down to funding. Would you suggest waiting to speak to the admissions team about offers until after the end of the month (by which time I may or may not receive an offer); or alternatively to let them know of my situation? Many thanks -
Georgetown McCourt MPP VS. Chicago Harris MPP
economixed_policy replied to Alex51648's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Hi I'd be very interested in an answer to Alex's question as well. I'm in a similar situation in that I've for funding from Chicago but have not heard anything from McCourt on funding yet. In terms of reputation where do the program's lie relative to each other? Harris and McCourt both claim to be quantitative - any idea on a comparison here? Finally, I'm intetested in WB/IMF/ADB type roles. I understand that McCourt would have a locational advantage but any advice on that Chicago vs DC would also be very welcome. Thanks, Bilal -

Yes still cant log in to the chat - same error. Also since I havent heard back on funding it seems the chanes of actually getting it might be low. I would imagine they might have wanted to get offers out before the chat. -

Thanks for sharing - I guess everything will only become clear end of this month/beg April for all the remaining schools on funding. -
David - thank you once again for your insightful post. This helps clarify how the system work. I agree: the thought that one might have to forego a place at HKS because of money, or accept an offer of place at other schools (also because of money) is an uncomfortable one. This is why, I'm sure, all of us are waiting anxiously for the first week of April. I hope all of us are able to make it one way or another. Good luck everyone!

Thank you that's very helpful. CPL is the Dublin one right? Does anyone know if an interview is part of all fellowship assessment or just for a few?

I have not heard anything yet so far either. Waiting, hopefully.

Advice Requested - Worth Retaking the GRE?
economixed_policy replied to coeusdave's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
While I haven't applied to PhD programs, only to Masters, I can say from my experience that unless your Schools have a minimum GRE it is probably worth focusing on something else. I think its hard to say for anyone to say without knowing the rest of your profile, but I was going through a similar crisis in my head on whether to retake it or not. I didn't retake it and mine were lower than yours for policy programs. I hope this helps. -
Less Debt or Better Program?
economixed_policy replied to hikarizx's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Thank you for your candour - I appreciate it. This is helpful - even though much your words are the thoughts inside my head - it always helps to hear another say it out. I know how debt can be a handicap on pratically anything you might want to do, so I am generally cautious of walking into somethign - particularly of this magnitude. I guess its just a difficult decision when you have a program vs. finances situation. -
Less Debt or Better Program?

Thank you - that is very helpful. I think a lot of why you've outlined is stuff I am thinking as well. I do want to go to HKS for all the same reasons you mention. I guess a lot now rides on HKS' financial aid offer. I truly hope that makes it possible for me to attend. -

Chicago Harris 2nd Year Opinion

I have very similar questions about "how quantiative". I've got a masters in economics from the UK. Any examples would be very useful. Thanks! -
Less Debt or Better Program?
economixed_policy replied to hikarizx's topic in Government Affairs Forum
Interesting discussion. I'm going through something very similar. I have a masters in economics already and 6 years of work experience. In for Chicago Harris for full tuition for both years. In for HKS but no bews of funding yet. How much debt is worth taking? I'm an international student. Harris would mean $20k debt per year. HKS potentially much more. How much "premium" is worth it? I realise I'll need a U.S. cosigner for my loan but the HKS MPA fits where I am in my career, while a lot of Harris would be stuff I did at my economics grad program. Any thoughts very welcome. -
WWS was my first rejection too (and last since im done with the waiting game). It was in my top 3 with Berkeley and Harvard, but the funding made me lean towards it. In some ways this helps because HKS was always my dream school and this rejection will only motivate me to put in even more effort to work on arranging the funding to make it a reality. Many many congratulations to all who got accepted!
-
Reject oh well! Many congrats to all those who got in!
-
I'm in!!! Don't think I've been this happy in a very very long time. All the best to all of you!
-
David, just to echo the candidates before me: your comments and Matt's blog have been invaluable in getting us through this. I'm sure I speak for us all when I say regardless of other acceptances or rejects, the decision from HKS is special on a whole different level. Good luck all! And thanks to the admissions team at HKS (regardless of how we fare).

I am in a very similar situation. Pretty much the most unproductive week at work ever. At least it's the last such week! Good luck all!

Thanks for your reply. Yes I meant in-state tuition in the case of Cal residents and financial aid/loans under FAFSA by virtue of being US citizens. Since neither of these applies to me, and I did not get a departmental fellowship, there seem to be limited options of funding: as an international student I would need to take a private loan and most likely need a U.S. co signer. At least that's my understanding of it. My question was if anyone know of any other source of funding/fellowship.

@kooyah many congratulations! I can't imagine how ecstatic you must be
