  1. So I am in the Education Policy department at TC and I have found the program to be worth it. I came in with a pretty large amount of funding for a masters (16K) and believe that I have gotten what I want out of the program. I suggest TC to those people who know what they want out of graduate school and have considered their decision wisely. I have enjoyed my classes in the department, feel that I am learning from true experts in their field, and have a good group of colleagues to bounce ideas off of. That said, I would never suggest coming to TC to get a masters in teaching if you plan to work in public schools as a practitioner, unless the money is of no object. I want to move into nonprofit management, consulting, or policy research and thus TC will provide a return on my investment. But for those planning to teach, it will not.
  2. I'm planning on using both. My program has both recommended and required books and I think I will buy or rent ebooks of the recommended texts while buying hard copies of the required. I prefer hard copies for notation and highlighting purposes and am just more comfortable using them. But who knows, maybe I will make the transition.
  3. I have the Q backpack http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/q-backpack/2503651 I really like it. It's a good size, not too big not too small, and fits my macbook air, gym clothes and shoes, and some small books.
  4. I think at TC you really have to prove why you personally should be funded when they have so many people just clamoring to join the school. I got some money as a masters student but it took presenting them with another offer to get a substantial amount that would enable me to attend. Further, most masters students won't receive any scholarship money their second year due to the fact that most of those grants come from enrollment services. Thus it can be a bit misleading to come in expecting continued funding only to realize it isn't there. Their financial aid leaves a lot to be desired but, at the end of the day, it doesn't surprise me.
  5. So I bike year-round in San Francisco and it is really not too bad. There are a few days a year when it is down pouring and I don't like to bike. But people still do. HOWEVER the weather is really unpredictable in the Bay Area and can vary greatly from year to year. This year, for example, there has not been much rain. But two years ago it felt like the rain never stopped! Bike theft exists but you just need to be smart enough to lock your bike with a u-lock. People steal wheels if they look nice but otherwise aren't super interested. I only have one friend who has had his bike stolen and it's because he didn't lock it. It seems like you would be just fine.
  6. If you are a California resident, ucla should be cheaper already, right? Does the funding from Syracuse supercede what you would pay as a California resident?
  7. I am still in the process of deciding between NYU steinhardt and teachers college for a masters in sociology of education. I received a good amount of scholarship aid from both schools so I am just trying to determine which school offers the program I want. I'm leaning toward TC at the moment but we'll see what happens. NYU has added a more personal touch along the way, which of course makes me feel more special. But TCs program has a little less structure, allowing me to attain the skills I want to take from the program in a more flexible manner. Anyone else facing a similar conundrum?
  8. Hello and another question! I am probably going to be attending teachers college next fall while my boyfriend will be attending NYU. What are some areas that are price-friendly for grad students that would also be fairly easy for both of us to commute from?
  9. I think there is a lunch in the beginning of April. I contacted the financial aid and scholarship people but got conflicting responses. One told me that we should receive aid the first week of April, the other the last week of March. I have already received a scholarship at TC so I am just waiting to see how aid shapes up over at NYU.
  10. Mine was also in my spam folder so I second this!
  11. Not meaning to post twice in a row but I received notification of my acceptance today. So decisions should be coming out soon!
  12. I am still waiting as well though I applied to the sociology of education program. But I think the two fall under the same umbrella. I called in last Friday and they told me all decisions should be out within the next two weeks. I am obviously hoping sooner rather than later.
  13. My initial offer was in the accept letter. The financial aid office will send me an official letter soon.
  14. Yep! Decisions went out today for Sociology and Education in the Ed Policy and Social Analysis division.
  15. Thanks all! Also, my next step is still the same. It's the app submission website that I was guided to. So if any of you are wondering where to check, it's there.
