  1. THIS IS WHERE I'M GOING TO ATTEND: Berkeley GSPP, MPP (no funding) OTHER SCHOOLS I CONSIDERED: UT Austin (full funding), GPPI (just a lil' funding), GW (no funding), Columbia (no funding), UCLA (no funding) WHY I CHOSE MY NEW SCHOOL: 1. I am a CA resident. 2. I visited on admit day and was overwhelmingly impressed with the students, teachers, and the curriculum. The school itself is highly regarded even at Berkeley-- there are specific spots reserved for GSPP students in the law and econ classes, etc. 3. The location of the school is in the Bay area -- its a great place to live. 4. Although I have not received any funding, I'm fairly confident I will get tuition remission and pay only 2k/semester. Work opportunities abound at the school. If you are willing to put in the effort to find work, you will find it. 5. The opportunities to network through the program are amazing. I'm sure I'll have a job by the time I graduate with minimal debt. 6. Also, continuing on to a phd would not be difficult. 7. I'm allowed to call the faculty by their first name. 8. I receive a key to the GSPP building which is a cozy little place. 9. Of all the people I met, there were only 1 or 2 that I didn't immediately get along with. 10. Its a collaborative atmosphere. 11. Its berkeley. The name recognition alone is fantastic. 12. Its the smallest MPP program I could find. If you are on the fence and want me to convince you to come to Berkeley, PM me. I will caveat that I did not get into HKS/WWS so I don't know how to compare them with GSPP, but I'm kind of glad I didn't have to make that decision. It works out great for me. I hope you find your school, too!
  2. Thanks for the tidbit Norma! I did get a call but I missed it. This is GREAT news. I'll be at GSPP in a few weeks for the open house and this was one of my primary questions. Minimizing student loans is an obvious priority for me, so this makes me very optimistic! I appreciate it. All the talk of GSPP is making GPPI float into oblivion at this point and I'm 95 percent sure that it is where I will go. If you have any questions you want asked at the orientation, please let me know.
  3. Hi all, I'm loving this thread. And strangely, I'm somewhat excited because everyone replying maybe one of my classmates next year. I was shut out of the Ivies (KSG, WSS), but was accepted everywhere else: LBJ, GSPP, GPPI, SIPA (Doesn't count as Ivy, to me), and GW. The 2 schools I'm very strongly considering are GSPP and GPPI. Both have great names, are quantitative, and have many positive factors going for them. I'm a California resident, so GSPP has a one up on cost, even with 10k funding from GPPI. There has been one GSPP commenter here, but what I gather from both programs is that the GSPP is more structured with less electives. To me, that means more general analytical skills. I believe there is an internship and a thesis that will give me the opportunity to focus on my areas of interest, but I like this approach to PP. GPPI has more electives (I think) but also requires a specific focus to the MPP. From a program match up, there a number more electives at GPPI, but the law courses at GSPP are right on, in my book. My electives, ideally, will be in GIS and STATA programming as that is what interests me in the future. However, I want a more robust understanding of policy and GSPP seems more suited for me. I'm talking myself into it at this point. However, I'd really appreciate any feedback from GSPP graduates to date. And it really appears that from a funding perspective, in the second year at GSPP I would likely be able to receive a TA-ship position that would eliminate my need for loans. I think. There seems to be more funding available for students at GSPP than GPPI. But I was UC undergrad, so me and my friends were always hustling for campus jobs.
  4. Now that I've officially been rejected from WWS I can give up hope of getting into the program. No biggie though! Life moves on, it just would have been cool. Also, I have to say, the caliber of people on here make me think that this program in particular was very very competitive. Where ever you go I'm sure you'll do great!
  5. I'm starting to believe the results tab for WWS....there are a handful of wait list results. Hopefully any decision comes soon.
  6. From the waitlist/alternate email I received from RAND, they stated that most likely they would be able to tell us by April 15th, which is the deadline for those accepted to either reject or accept going to RAND. I have no idea how many people had been waitlisted! I was hoping it was just me, but it seems like its both of us, at least. I get no sense, either, as to whether or not any slots will actually open up. I was more partial to RAND at the beginning of the application process, but I have to admit that after being accepted by some very high profile schools for Master's programs, there is not a great chance that I would take a phd offer. I'd prefer to get a master's from one of these programs, then attend a higher profile program for my phd. But thats me. How about you? Any thoughts on what you are doing? Would you take it if accepted?
  7. Haha! I hope you are right! Thats too funny. I have no idea how this works, but I'm guessing you are correct. Hopefully we will hear soon, then! Good luck.
  8. Wait until 100 people log in and say they have received acceptance letters before you decide you haven't gotten in...I applied there too and a number of other schools. How I was notified was fairly random. I'm very anxious and I think we all only have about a 1/2 percent chance of getting in... Two people stating that they got in just seems...well...there would be more people stating they had/had not gotten in already. Plus, isn't the rejection like a group email to everyone who didn't get in all at once? There will be plenty of teed off people here or at autoadmit (where I recognize your moniker) stating that they were hoping to win the lotto. Best of luck!
  9. I've been waitlisted too! I'd like to know my chances. Are you in Santa Monica?
  10. According to autoadmit, if you were accepted, you will be CALLED by current students in the next week. Date: March 12th, 2008 10:43 AM Author: silentbobma hey -- current MPP/JD student here, first-time poster. got an email about an HKS "new admit phone-a-thon" on 3/18, 3/19 and 3/20 (the last day for international students), so i assume that means they'll notify by then. please let me know if you have any questions about the school -- i was also a harvard ugrad, so i have a pretty good perspective on the university and the k-school. (hint: i love both.) good luck everyone! http://www.autoadmit.com/thread.php?thr ... forum_id=1
