  1. That seems kinda childish of them if its true...

I think it has to do with the rating of the schools, when they accept a student and that student declines, their rating goes down (that's what I was told), so maybe they don't want to take the risk with someone that previously declined their offer.. or maybe it's not even true, don't know...

  2. Yeah, I had wondered about that.  I've decided to accept MICA's offer though, so looks like I'll only have to go through this process once!

Congradulations! I paid my deposit yesterday :) exciting!!

  3. I am STILL going back and forth (between accepting MICA's offer or reapplying next year) and I have never been so stressed out = /

    Hi hillaryanne,

Someone wrote on the freakout forum that if you decline an offer they might not accept you again next year. I have no idea if its true or not, but maybe it's something you should consider... maybe you could ask Chris about it?

  4. Hi Hillaryanne! Congradulations on the funding, any additional amount is money that you won't have to work for later to pay back - even if it's not what you expected it's still better than before.

I understood that on-campus housing is more expensive than living in the city. I was also told that it's better to look for something in a 1 mile radius of the school, because public transportation doesn't go in the direction of the school.

Are you planning to rent a place before you get there?

  5. Congratulations, this is awesome!  Rinehart or Mount Royal?

Rinehart! Mount Royal was too small an offer to begin with, It wasn't an option... but I think Rinehart is better for me also in terms of the program. What about you? have you made your decision yet?

  6. Hi guys,

this is a note for everyone who is still debating and for everyone who is considering re-applying next year!

Both schools I was debating between sent me e-mails today that they approved my request for additional funding - one approved another 5,000 a year and the other 7,000 (in both cases the total sum was higher than what they post on their website as the maximum scholarship you can get!). This was great news for me.

If you've been accepted to a school you wanted but with not enough funding, don't hesitate to ask for more! I think they all expect that and on many occasions they approve, at least some of the amount you ask for. If they don't you can still attend or decline, there is nothing to lose.

Good luck to everyone with your applications and decisions :)

  7. Hey guys,

I just got an e-mail from Chris that they approved my request for additional funding, not as much as I asked but a significant amount! It definitely clears my doubts, I am going!

  8. new york

    I would choose Baltimore.

I have a similar choice. I chose the one with better people to work with. I know that different people have different financial situations, and that sometimes better money must trump the better program, but for me the better program wins.

I have to choose between Hunter and Rutgers. Hunter is the better program, cheaper, and in New York, but I get zero funding. Rutgers is still a good program (or I would not have even applied) in New Brunswick (ugh), but they offered me amazing funding.

Despite that, I think I'm going to Hunter. If Hunter had been as expensive, however, as Columbia or Yale or whatever, I would go with Rutgers, but since it is relatively inexpensive, I'm choosing Hunter. I can make it work without funding.

I would evaluate the difference in price and then take into account that interest will probably double whatever you'll pay. MICA is a very good school. Have you talked to both programs about how they support you in the year or two after you graduate?

    Thanks guys,

I sent an e-mail to the NYAA saying that I decline their offer, and they increased my scholarship.. It is such a difficult decision and I have to make it tomorrow...!

the programs are so different too..  I think I decided on MICA, the difference in scholarship is not that high and the cost of living in Baltimore is lower so I guess it would even out.. Why can't I do both at the same time? or have two life times... :)

  9. What would you do if you have a not very good school but in New York and that offers better scholarship (but not a full one), and MICA - more expensive - to choose from? I have to make a decision in two days.. aaahhh

  10. Yeah, it unfortunately has nothing to do with how much they like (or don't!) your work... I too was admitted to Mt. Royal with 1/3 of tuition, and during my interview he said "well, I'm not supposed to tell you this but from the bottom of my heart I just have to let you know our funding is embarrassing, it's truly the one flaw of the program currently".

The 800/mo for TAing is truly shocking though, Baltimore is cheap (easily find rent in the 3-400 range) but still, that's unlivable.

    it's not 800 a month, it's 800 for the whole semester...

  11. I don't know how many people applied, is it still only 10 admitted though?  I know, I feel the same way, I got rejected from almost everywhere else.  If you don't mind me asking, what kind of funding did you get?

I got into Rinehart and Mount Royal, I was offered 1/3 tuition to Mount Royal and 1/2 to Rinehart. neither is enough for me. I am an international student so I don't have the option of Federal loans... Mount Royal isn't even an option. I am trying to get more scholarships from other sources, hopefully something will work out..

  12. I know that they just finished renovating their grad studios.  The studios themselves are 12' x 15' (or something along those lines).  The studios open into private wood and metal shop.  That fact, plus the small amount of students drew me to the program.

What about you?  Have you heard anything interesting?

I heard that Maren is really nice, and in general it seems really professional - the works of the students etc.. there is also a common work space that is bigger than the individual studios.

Do you know how many ppl applied? just curious.. I still find it hard to believe I got in...

  13. Hi all, very long time lurker here, finally decided to chime in.  I got accepted in MICA Rinehart and am highly considering going but I'm uneasy about Baltimore.  I've heard really good things and really bad things and I'm curious if anyone else is having this same issue or maybe could shed some light on the place.

    Hi!

I also got into Rinehart! maybe we'll be co-years :) . I've never been to Baltimore but I heard it's got the advantages and disadvantages of a sort of suburb - it's affordable and you can live in a walking distance from the school, but it's not as exciting and eventful as New York.. I personally prefer it that way. Do you have other options?
