  1. I am at Rutgers right now. As far as safety goes, the campus is safe enough such that you don't have to worry about it. The physics department is in Piscataway not New Brunswick but it is pretty safe in both places. You can get to the other campus in a few minutes by the campus bus. If the only other factor you are worried about is safety and RU is the better program, then choose RU.
  2. Which should I choose for math phd graduate study: Carnegie Mellon (algorithms, combinatorics, and optimization), Ohio State, or University of Washington in Seattle. I am interested in probability, combinatorics, and analysis. Any information on the strengths/weaknesses of any of the three programs would be helpful. Thanks.
  3. I can only speak for RU where I am completing my undergrad studies in math. I think there may be more opportunities for your fiancee if you attend RU as it is closer to more urban areas. Although RU may not be the best choice if the outdoors is a major factor for you. Something you may want to consider is that there are many other good schools near RU which means there are probably many different seminars given in the region and more interaction among the faculty with other schools. I think it really depends on what field you want to specialize in if you have a general idea and any faculty members you want to work with. I feel that RU is very strong in discrete math and lie algebras. But, RU is a pretty ugly looking campus and the region is not as friendly towards college students compared to many other places. You may want to ask the faculty at your school for their opinions on faculty they may know at any of the three schools you are considering. Don't hesitate if you have any more questions about RU.
  4. Does anyone know any sites where they rank mathematics departments by fields? Also it would be nice if the ranking by fields go down to the top 50s instead of US news(which is unreliable) and only lists the top 15 or so.
  5. I am still on the waitlist for UW in math with a "50-50" percent chance of being admitted according to Tom. I did not get funding for visiting. Can you tell me about your impression of the school's math department. Any information that I cannot access from browsing a webpage would be very helpful. Thanks. Btw, it's interesting that I was admitted to OSU a long time ago and you're still waiting.

  7. So I emailed minnesota and their response was "After consulting with the Director of Graduate Studies, he asked me to let you know that you application will be reviewed and any offer would be contingent upon receiving your TOEFL scores." which is just ridiculous.
  8. So I applied to the Math Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota and it turns out that they require the TOEFL for everyone who did not grow up with English as their native language. No other school I applied to has this requirement. Even though I've been living in either the US or Canada ever since 4, they still are forcing me to take the TOEFL. But I didn't even know about it until I contacted them asking if my application is complete. Should I even bother taking this exam now considering that god knows when they will actually receive the scores? Does anyone know why they even have this requirement?
