I first recieved an email from DAAD Australia, about my rejection. Then four days later I got a message from Bonn on the Portal, confirming the decision. Glad I'm not the only one to have made that decision! But I'm still looking for ways to avoid debt.

Yes crthrasher, I want to go to Hertie despite the bad news about funding, I've come this far already! I don't yet know how but it'll happen. Good to know I'm not the only one!

I wasn't clear on that either - whether the numbers referred only to Australian applicants or worldwide - the message didn't say but it did come from Bonn, not DAAD Australia. However those total numbers do seem quite small. Where are you teaching crthrasher? I'm near Nuremberg, in a Gymnasium and also Realschule. DAAD says it cannot consider those who have lived in Germany for more than 15 months before applying, so I guess we were both safe with that, but whether or not already being here is a positive thing.. I don't know.

I just received a follow-up message on the Portal, from Bonn, about my rejection. It was very polite, and it gave some numbers that I thought I'd share. "The Selection Committe had to decide between 149 applications and was able to award 46 scholarships. The number of qualified applications usually exceeds the number of available scholarship." I was surprised, it's not as competitive as I thought! It's hard for me to see why I came out at the bottom third, but maybe my status as already living in Germany currently was a detracting rather than positive factor - they aim to mobilise exchange and maybe I had already sort of made that step. But who knows! Good luck to you guys, I hope the numbers give you a bit of hope?

Yes I am, another English teaching assistant job is maybe possible, and this could help finance living costs (at best). But you can't choose a placement, and my school has recommended not working during the degree due to its intensive nature. Not sure yet.

Thanks Horb, viggosloof28. I know something better will come. Not giving up just yet.

Everyone's different, I guess I just wasn't what they were looking for this time. Horb, DAAD Australia just said they got approval from Bonn to email me.

Bummer. Just got a rejection email! I thought I was fairly strong. Good luck to you guys. My profile: Applied for DAAD Study Scholarship, have done a 3 year undergrad in political science (University of Queensland, Australia), master's summer school at Oxford University in UK, 1 year assistant teaching in Germany. Admitted to Hertie School of Governance, an elite private university in Berlin. (Btw, my application status now says "selection made". So that doesn't mean acceptance.)

Hi yeskay, I was admitted to Hertie MIA 2015 too, but had to apply for DAAD funding before October last year (the deadline), even though I didn't know then if Hertie would admit me. That round of funding is for potentially my whole degree. If you have not yet applied, DAAD can still offer you funding during your second study year only, if you apply this year before October.

My stay and my job in Germany was self organised! I moved to Bavaria in early 2014 to live with a family who are good friends of mine, on a 1 year 'work and travel' visa, and I was lucky to have the principal of a high school in my village (friend of a friend) offer me the assistant English teaching job. I'm on volunteer pay (500 euros/month) but it's enough for me and I love the job. I've since had my visa extended so I can study at Hertie in September, so I'll be in Germany for years to come!

Yeah I can understand that. But the novelty of Europe wears off after a while. For me, after 8 months Germany felt no more interesting than home. That has a positive side too, but I'm with you on wanting to be intellectually challenged once again. Let's see what happens.

As soon as we get the results we're gonna look back on this waiting time and wonder why we weren't just a little more carefree. Whether we get accepted or not, the lead-up to either can be made tortuous by impatience. Horb I fell into that trap too haha. But I'm just gonna deliberately do other normal things now. Brokecollegegrad I know how you feel, I'm assistant teaching at schools in Germany (for English) and while that's fun, I really want to start working towards my real career.

I should start thinking about other things during my day. Since January I've spent too much time in anticipation. Nicer to be surprised by an unexpected email, whenever it comes. Back to normal life!

Ok thanks. That seems to be the North American site, maybe their scheduling is different to other regions. The Australian site only says "around March". By looking at the past years on GradCafe, it seems most people were getting their results late March. I hope it's not too far away...I'm now getting into the bad habit of checking the portal and this forum every day for the results.

Hi but where did you read that exactly? Could you give a link to it?

I created this account just to tell you guys about that "selection made" thing. When I select the column with my mouse and hover over it, the tooltip tells me "Row 1 column, Application Status - Selected". When I select another column with my mouse, lets say "Funding program number", the tooltip tells me "Row 1 column, Funding Program Number - Selected". "Selected", or "selection made" in that hovering info box means that you selected that column using your mouse. That's my guess! I hope this helps DAAD portal applicants now and in many years to come lol. I'm personally still waiting for a decision about my Study Scholarship for a two year MIA program at Hertie School of Governance: my application status still says Paper Copies Received.
