  1. Mudlark: not at U of T. This year tuition + incidental fees were over 7500 and expected to grow next year. This amount is taken out of my fellowship, which leaves me with 15000.

  2. For those of you waiting for PhD SSHRC wait list movement, I just got an e-mail upgrading me to a CGS! Hopefully there will be more good news around here soon!

AAHHHHHHHHH I'm so so so so happy!!! Michael Smith travel funding here I come!

    Congratulation, mudlark! excellent news!

  3. Hey! I got my letter last week - reversion list.

May I ask what what discipline you are declining your award in?

I got my letter today. Strange, they still ask you to specify how much SSHRC is awarding you - which is weird, because it's a moot point. I can't hold both, unfortunately.

I am declining in history, sweet. (sorry, couldn't help myself. Metukah means sweet in Hebrew) wink.gif

  4. Has anyone received a letter from OGS?

I understand you need to notify them of acceptence or decline by signing their form.

I'm going to make someone happy and decline mine.

  5. i'd love to, but i have a rehearsal. if friday turns out to be the day, have a good time!

No, I'm absolutely open to suggestions. Please everyone, propose another time.

  6. I hear this is the case. It's probably the only way I'll get an award.

Also for drinks, evenings work! Tuesday is my birthday, but any other day is fine. Victory is also a fine choice, and quite a propos.

How about Friday @ Victory then?

  7. i'd be inclined to go a few more blocks west and hit the Victory. better beer and food!

If that's alright with everyone else - than I'm in! like I said, beer is not a factor with me. :)

  8. I've got my letter. Just hoping someone jumped on a Vanier, then I'll be in the same good mood as the rest of you. I'm already reasonably happy. Let me know when and where you're thinking. I don't have a usual hangout, just somewhere that serves Guinness.

Do you know Harbord House (obviously on Harbord st., close to campus)? I don't know if they serve Guinness (I don't drink beer - I know, blesphemer!) but it's a nice place to hang out and reasonably central.

  9. i emailed sshrc to accept. got an IMMEDIATE reply confirming my acceptance. :/

you need to print out and fill out two forms, both of which are available on the sshrc site - under the "using your funds" section. take them to SGS, second floor. i did that today. took 5 min.

keep me in mind for drinks!

i must say, while i am obviously happy to have been funded, this has been a very bizarre and stressful process. my immediate relief comes with having closure, and not speculating wildly about the whole thing. i got zero communication from my department, or school of grad studies. to those who did not get funded, know that it is not a reflection of the quality of your work or your abilities as a researcher. i think the dimension of randomness and luck that goes into this process is massive, like any juried awards process.

Thanks for the info. I will probably be around campus on Tuesday (summer TAship. Need to make money to pay rent) and I'll do it then.

Has everyone in Toronto got their letters yet, speaking of drinks?

  10. To answer Hypatia's questions:

    1. Funded, regular SSHRC ; 19.20 out of 30,

    2. Toronto

    3. Letter received May 7; Letter postmarked: May 5; Letter dated: May 3 (they kept it around their office for two whole days!)

    4. Subject area and/or committee: I'm not sure I remember. It might have been history. Is that helpful?

    5. Applied through my university

    6. Year in PhD studies when you would take up the award: 3

    7. Taylor, Ross, or Queen's Fellowship?? no idea.

    8. Anything else you want to include that might be helpful: business-related project pitch? no. publications? one article accepted. major conference presentations? yes. One at the time of application. second time applying? yes, but last time I didn't pass the dept stage. Also awarded OGS but will decline (when the letter finally comes).

  11. Finally got my letter.

    Score: 19.20 / 30

They also say I must notify the council whether I wish to accept - which can be done by email.

However, they also mention I should also notify SGS - how do I do that? also by email? to whom?

Are there any forms to sign in order to activate the award? I don't see any forms in the envelope?

And Canuck - (almost) congrats. VERY good news.

When everyone in TO receive their letters, we can set time and place for drinks.

  12. The SSHRC letter came in the mail today. As promised, here are my stats: score of 21.9 for a CGS doctoral. I am entering a doctoral program in the fall and am a first time SSHRC applicant (who are these people giving me money???). I have no idea what school I will be attending, but am thinking that Northern Star might finally have a smoking buddy outside the front doors of the NMC dept. in Toronto.

For you obsessive sticklers out there, the envelope is that hideous recycled shade of grey-beige, and according to the digital scale on my kitchen counter, it weighs-in at 49 grams.

I agree that the "low" or "high" scholarship discussion is not productive. It is amazing to be awarded anything, if it is the case that you have won, and it is also an accomplishment to have the courage to apply in the first place. I found the application process terrifying.

Best of luck to all of you.

Congrats on your CGS! Excellent score!

And yay for a smoking buddy. Not to many of those left. People quit left and right, as if smoking is bad for you or something... laugh.gif

and btw, no letter on this end yet.

  13. Just received mail notification (I am in Ottawa) of PhD SSHRC 4 X 20,000.

    Competition Results-21.4/30

I got a heads up yesterday from a university administrator that good news was on its way.

    congrats! awesome results!

  14. torontonians -- if you are serious about drinks, let me know! i am. tonight i have a gig (back room at the tranzac. i'll be the guy with a bari sax if anyone is around) otherwise, let's do grab a pint at some point over the summer.

I'm serious. Once everyone knows their status, we should coordinate time & place. It will sure be interesting to meet other people who go to my school and haven't had a chance to meet because of our different programs. I know it may sound a bit strange to get together with a bunch of anons from the internet, but I've done that before, and it was fun.

  15. OMG, at the 11th hour, just before she left the office for today, my dept Grad admin emailed me to let me know informally that my name appears on her list as successful applicant. She'll call them tomorrow to inquire more.

    <huge relief>

    Who's up for drinks?

  16. <sigh>

as expected, here is the reply from SGS:

    Dear XX,

    Thank you for your email.

Please contact your Graduate administrator either today or tomorrow, they will have the results.

    <end quote>

in the meantime, no one is getting back to me at my department, and I'm afraid by the end of the day the men in white coats will come to take me away.

  17. 'Recommended but not funded', as well. Don't know where I am on the waiting list, but it doesn't look good. Ah well. Back to comps prep! Best of luck to the rest of you!

Did you find out at your dept or SGS?

Well, at least waitlisted doesn't mean an outright "no." There's still hope. And we can all still have a drink. wink.gif

<going insane here. not knowing is worse than rejection>

  18. I emailed both the grad coordinator and the federal awards person at SGS. I'm not expecting any kind of revealing info from them, but I can't just sit here and do nothing. I'm out of fingernails to bite!

  19. I called grad studies and was informed I've won the $20k/ year SSHRC for 3 years. smile.gif Anyone at Queen's can call Leisa Macdonald to find out...

Good luck to everyone else waiting, and when I get my letter I'll let you know my score.

    Congrats, Phalene!

  20. I thought I heard the familiar sound of shoving envelopes through mailslots, but nothing happened here. So there are two options, neither of them bodes well for me:

Either there is no main for me today and the dude just skipped over my door,

or I'm starting to hear things that aren't there. ohmy.gif

  21. Thank you for saying something. I feel so much better. Breathing and I even started working!!

Canuckonomist and bad breath this looks like the beginning of a beautiful relationship biggrin.gif oh ya and north star too...

    Bonding over this stressful process...

Hey, if we get SSHRCs, we should have a congratulations drink! laugh.gif

(do you think I just jinxed it? ohmy.gif )
