Fourteen?!? Holy hell, I thought my nine were a lot. Brave person! I'm still waiting to hear from six of those nine, though with varying degrees of eagerness/anxiety depending which one we're talking about. And was lucky enough to hear early from one that I know people in other fields are still waiting on, if that helps give a better sense of the percentage of decisions out so far...

This is a helpful thread. Thumbs up. Does anyone have thoughts about bringing an SO to one of these things? Not to drag the poor guy/girl around to campus events where they'd be awkward and bored, but to give them a chance to get a feel for the area as well, since both halves of the couple would necessarily be relocating there. What would he/she do all day while the future grad is off schmoozing with faculty and students, though? Hmm.

Hai you yi wei. From your list of schools, it sounds like we are (partly) one another's competition, though I'm focused on late imperial. And your languages are way more impressive than mine... Jiayou!

FWIW, I just today found an icky typo (two "the"s in a row) in one of my SOPs. Before now I'd been religiously avoiding even looking at any of them, so... the only reason I was reading this one again? To revise it for a fellowship application, because somehow the school I sent it to actually wants me to attend. I still reallyreallyreally wish that I had been less punchy (or whatever) and caught the typo before I submitted. But anecdotally, I guess some admissions committees are forgiving of these kinds of finger errors in otherwise solid pieces of writing.

Their deadline for FLAS applications is the 16th. I'm guessing that might be the main reason I heard from them unofficially this early--that they wanted to give enough time to get that in. So, yeah, may not have any bearing on other fields, or even necessarily other applicants in the same field.

I am in an Asian subject area, and heard from them as well. This board is really interesting... we're like the blind men trying to describe the elephant to one another. Beats being in the dark alone, anyway. Edit: Last I checked, nothing had changed on the online application status page, except updates the computer could make by itself like whether my letters of rec had come in.
