  1. It's so encouraging to hear that a lot of you turned down the more expensive out of state school! Everyone I've talked to has told me to go to the instate school as long as it is accredited and is acceptable overall. Also, I'm getting a full-ride in state, so it would have been ridiculous to accept a $60,000 pile of debt instead, but it's still so hard to turn down your dream school!

  2. Hey you guys! I would really appreciate some insight as well. I'm in the same boat. I have been offered a full-tuition graduate assistantship plus a stipend at an instate school, but my family and friends all live in Arizona, and I'm ready for a change of pace. I keep imagining that I will regret spending almost 50k total on the out of state school, but I also absolutely love the program. I guess my question boils down to this: Do you think I will regret going to a free program that I don't prefer, or a pricey program that I am excited about? Thanks!

  3. Hey Speech Path Girl,

I did my undergrad as a speech and hearing science major at ASU. I enjoyed all of my professors and many of them are super kind and helpful. I also attended the open house at ASU and it ended with students and faculty going to a mexican restaurant and drinking beers together, so it seems the professors are pretty laid back.  Classes are held in the same location as the speech and hearing clinic....and the glass building is pretty amazing! it is probably less than 10 years old and in great condition. It seems that the program has more professors that are work with children rather than adults. However, the students and the professors both said that one great thing about the program is the connections they have with so many different hospitals/schools/clinics/etc. They said that they could get you into anywhere you would like to have an internship.

If you aren't used to the summer (and fall and spring) heat, it can be quite brutal. However, I remember having to bring a jacket to class because they cranked the AC all day!

Overall, ASU is an amazing school, the program is highly ranked, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a speech and hearing science undergrad. I am accepted as well and the only reason I haven't accepted yet is because I am not wanting to leave Washington and am still considering Western Washington.

Thank you so much!! This was extremely helpful. I'm actually in Washington too, but I am originally from Arizona, so I"m not too worried about the heat :)

  4. Is there anything in particular you want to know about ASU? I went there for a semester a few years ago, so might be able to answer some questions for you.. not that I have firsthand experience being in the graduate program..

Hey! I was wondering what the faculty-student relationships are like! And also how questions/disagreements are received by faculty...are there any "scary" speech teachers that people don't get along with? Thanks!

  5. I'm pretty sure there is a thread for ASU students! Maybe it would be helpful? Or at least put you in contact with others in your position? I also have a friend who did her undergrad in CD there, so maybe she would know someone in the grad program. I can ask, if you'd like!

Hey! Unfortunately that thread is only people talking about being wait listed! haha I am accepted into the program, but I'm struggling with going there, because I don't know much about it! Would you mind putting me in touch with your friend? That would be so helpful!
