  1. Put off the GREs until summer or October..study hard for them for months, you can get 1200+ with the work, take practice tests (or use this one you will be taking as a practice).

a GRE below 1000 will hurt you, especially for PhD programs. I would say get 1200+ on your GRE, a little more research exp., and apply to PhD programs (if that's what youre ultimately aiming for) and some backup MA programs for next year

  2. i was in the NYU MA program

I would recommend going to the PhD. Firstly, it is extremely expensive, for 2 years you're looking at loans approaching 100k including everything.

The classes were easy, not challenging, easy to get As. For the most part, the teachers are laid back, not too involved, probably jsut doing this to make a quick buck.

A good thing is that you're right in the middle of Manhattan, there are a lot of opportunities to do research.

A bad thing is that most the classes you take will not transfer to a different PhD program, and also that most PhD programs offer a Masters along the way.

Chances of getting your name on a publication seem slim, at least if you're doing it through NYU, mostly the research you'll be doing will be the same thing that the undergrads are doing (helping PhD students at NYU do their research), unless you're very proficient at statistics, or the people youre working with are very generous

most people go to this program because they are not qualified enough to get into a PhD program (not enough research, not enough psychology coursework, etc.)

but seeing that you've been accepted into a PhD, that seems like the best bet

Ultimately, you're looking at spending 2 years and close to $100,000 on something which you will have to do over again if you go PhD. Also, an MA in General Psychology is pretty much the same as a B.A./B.S., not much you can do with it.

  3. Long story short, I haven't withdrawn yet, but I intend to do so very soon. I wanted to know where I stood with other places and be 100% sure before I made such a drastic move, and I figure I put in the same amount of hard work, stress, and money as everyone else. I'll be withdrawing my three remaining applications with plenty of time before April 15 (not that I think I have a chance at any of them anyway).

jordy, who was your POI at TAMU?

  4. Wow that's depressing. :( You know, if that person had to cheat their way into a PhD program by stealing other people's ideas, chances are that'll bite them eventually I think. If that person is going to succeed in research, they will need to be able to think for themselves and come up with their own ideas. It'll be hard for this person to get by just on stealing ideas...at least I hope that's the case. I bet eventually this person will either get discredited, lose allies (and the all-important networking connections that come with them) because of their behavior and the way they treat others, or simply not advance due to a lack of good ideas of their own.

And btw, even if you don't have an acceptance yet, and even if you don't get one this year, the fact that you're an honest person means that when you do get into a PhD program (and I'm sure you will, even if it ends up being next round!) then you'll know that you worked hard and deserved it (and you'll be able to sleep at night knowing your achievements are honestly won!). Plus since your efforts are your own and you care about treating other people well and fairly, people will recognize that in you and want to work with you, which will help you succeed in the long run and probably even make you feel especially good about your successes. That's my prediction anyway, fwiw. :)

that a nice thought and all, but sometimes cheaters win and honest people get screwed

  5. Post a bunch of stuff about how horrible the program is, so that someone who has been accepted sees it and decides not to attend...

I'd kill for a waitlist spot right now, if that makes you feel any better.

yeah, that makes me feel a little better. knowing other people are suffering like i am helps

  6. I definitely know how you feel... I get on my email in the morning hoping for something... The other day I was in class and my mom called me. I didn't know it was her and my heart began racing.. I am just ready to know that I will be somewhere. ANYWHERE...

I applied to A&M also...have not heard anything
