  1. @scaredapplicant @oneagain Thought you guys might be interested- So I called Columbia admissions to find out more about the waitlisting process, and they said when a space opens up, the faculty goes through the waitlist and re-evaluates each applicant to see who would be a good fit. I tried asking her around how many spaces open up based on previous years but she didn't know (she seemed a bit clueless and had to keep putting me on hold to ask other people), and that people will be contacted as spaces open up all the way up to August.

I guess the biggest deal breaker for me is that there's no visiting artist program, which means the faculty you get is the faculty you get.  They have occasional lecturers, but nowhere near the amount that similar programs in NY have.  For painting, you have a lot of faculty to choose from, but for photo/media my options were way more limited.  I didn't want to find myself in a situation where I was isolated in the work I was making, without the support of faculty.

Other than that, there's the amount of coursework involved, including art history classes each semester.  I have a solid foundation in art history, so it's not something I felt I needed.  The "seminar" classes are straight out of undergrad teaching as well, whereas other schools would instead host group critiques etc.  Their target demographic is a lot younger than a lot of the other east coast schools, so I think they structured around helping new artists get their bearing, rather than fostering graduate-level work.

I think it's probably a great program for certain kinds of painters and certain kinds of sculptors, but if you're making work that's less production-based, maybe not.

Ah, I see. Thanks a lot for your input, it really helps me in making a decision. I can see how resources would be especially limiting for people who aren't working with painting. I hope you're able to go to the program of your choice this year!

I'm on the spring waitlist like everyone else.

My interview felt strange in the way that others have already expressed.  My interviewers were pretty upfront with the fact that if I went there I'd struggle with finding other people who are interested in the issues I'm dealing with or the work I'm making.  This was already obvious to me based on what was at open studios the previous night.  That, and the program seems structured to be an extension of undergrad, but for people in their mid-20s.  In general, they seem to cater to young painters who are figuring out how to move to NY on the cheap.  In any case, not for me!

    Thanks for the reply!

I agree with many of the things you said, my interviewers also told me I would also struggle finding others interested in the concepts I'm dealing with in my work. I also found the work during open studios a bit limited in medium? I didn't see as much variety as I would have liked to see...If you don't mind, could I ask you one more question? What aspects of the program made you think it seems structured to be an extension of undergrad? I'm trying to decide if I want to go, but it's being really difficult to make up my mind.

    Congrats!

I have to say that I find this so funny.  This, on top of the many email mistakes, obvious typos in their official correspondence and strange administrative practices.  If I hadn't met Sarah myself, I'd assume that their admissions department was being run by a shoebox of psychotic hamsters.

    Thanks!

What's some of their strange administrative practices? I know I never got this 'thank you email' that they supposedly sent out to their interviewees, but other than that I haven't really come across anything weird aside from what just happened. I feel like what just happened to me was really unprofessional and it makes me more wary of the program. Also, I didn't get the greatest impression of Sarah when I was there, I mean she seemed nice enough but...I don't know. I might still end up accepting their offer though.

  5. uhhh so I guess I'm accepted to Hunter actually,
I got another email this morning saying to check my application and the letter changed to a letter of acceptance. I called Sarah and she said there must have been some kind of error, the acceptance letter is the right one.

@oneagain I asked if all acceptance letters went out yesterday, she said she sent all accepted applicants to be confirmed by the Dean last Friday, and they sent acceptance notifications yesterday/might still be sending them. She also said all rejection notifications had already gone out last Monday, so if you didn't hear anything I feel like you most likely got in!

Thanks for checking in with Columbia again!  I just noticed that someone posted a rejection from Columbia on March 17th - so maybe that means we were silently wait-listed?

That sucks about Hunter, but their selection process does seem odd to me.  I've met many students who were rejected over the years that ended up at way better schools.  I got the impression that they were looking for a very specific kind of artist.

Has anyone that interviewed at Hunter heard NOTHING from them today?  My status is unchanged.

Do you know if it was someone who had interviewed with them? Or maybe it was the initial rejection but they just got around to posting it now?

I'm not sure if they do look for a very specific kind of artist but I did notice when I was at their open studios there wasn't as much new media...? And they specifically told me their resources for that were not the best after I told them my work was heading in a direction where I was looking to incorporate digital components. Other than that I thought my interview went quite well and they threw me some questions that made me think more about my work in different ways.

Maybe no news means you got accepted? I would maybe call them today and try to find out!

@junie  or anyone else hear from columbia painting?  I'm still waiting after being interviewed a while ago and it's killing me.  I presume at this point I'm not getting in.  Also anyone hear from RISD painting?  I was wait-listed at SAIC and accepted at Upenn, but the pricetag is pretty steep and living and working in BK I don't hear a lot about Upenn's program or see their alums doing much, with a couple of high profile exceptions.  Is anyone going to Upenn or have more insight on their program?  Thanks guys and good luck

I just called the admissions office and they asked me my department and my name, then told me admission decisions for the painting department haven't all gone out yet and that I should hear in 1 to 2 weeks. I'm going to assume that this means I'm either on the waitlist or been rejected. Not sure about other dpts but I'm assuming they're in similar situations.

Also,  I just got my rejection letter from Hunter. To be honest I'm feeling a bit relieved? Because I wasn't so sold when I went to my interview, but people around me kept telling me it was a really good program.

One more thing, regarding RISD for those of you who might be curious, when I was at Hunter one of the fellow interviewees told me he got an acceptance call from RISD photo dpt without an interview, so I guess they do happen, though I'm guessing it's a rare thing. He told me he got an awesome funding package though, so maybe this dude was exceptionally good. (or maybe he was lying..?Don't see why he would though)

I wouldn't think about it that way (unless you think you really bombed your interview).  Very competitive schools notify their first picks and prepare funding offers for them.  Only after those first people decline their offers does the school begin to extend offers of admission to additional students.  At this point we're basically on the wait list, even if they haven't formally told us so.  I think once the Yale, Bard and UCLA kids start receiving their funding offers, we'll see some spots open up at Columbia.

Out of curiosity, do we all still have MFA after our applications in slideroom? @trapnado @marg37 @scaredapplicant @photo @junie

I actually think I didn't do so hot on my interview, but what you said comforted me a bit, haha. I absolutely loved the program and faculty so it bums me out that I'll most likely be rejected, but at this point I've gotten over it and feel happy to even have gotten an interview. In any case working full steam on my work this year led me to some personal breakthroughs and progress in my art so I feel pretty optimistic about that.

And I just checked my slideroom, it says 2016 Painting MFA. Yours?

anyone who interviewed with Columbia university photo or new genres get an acceptance call? I havent heard anything so I called the admissions office this morning who just told me that all decisions are to be made by the end of the month...

Hey i have a bit more news! I heard someone got an acceptance call yesterday and said Columbias still calling all week. They got in for painting but I imagine it's a similar situation with other departments.

  10. 2 minutes ago, scaredapplicant said:

What did you interview for and what did they say to you when you called?

I think I mentioned it on this forum already but I called Wednesday morning about Painting applicants, they said that all calls hadn't gone out yet and they should be made within this week or next week. I didn't think to ask about other departments, sorry! But I have a feeling it would be a similar answer? But my thoughts are that I feel like many or most of the calls for painting must have gone out already because @trapnado already got their call on Saturday. Seeing as I haven't seen anyone in the other departments on this forum mention getting a call I think you guys have more hope than me haha

    Hi everyone!

I was accepted into Pratt's Integrated Practices program this week and am thrilled. I applied to schools in NYC (simply because that's where I live) and have been officially rejected from Hunter and waitlisted at SVA. I have not heard anything back from Columbia though and was wondering what is up with that? Does anyone know what's going on with them? I applied for New Genres and saw some got official rejections or interviews but I just have radio silence. Any thoughts on what's going on? I'd really like to know so I can either get excited to start at Pratt in the fall or consider my options (Columbia was my top pick). Thanks!

For Columbia people have finished their interviews and have now either gotten a call saying they were accepted or are still waiting. I know official rejection news are sent after all the calls have been made based on my experience and previous forum posts. I still havent gotten a call so I feel like I havent been accepted but I wonder if anyone else got a call from them these past few days? (Other than @trapnado)

Thanks Junie!  Previous years have made it seem like if you don't get a call in the first week, then it's waitlist or worse... this is killing me.

I have also heard something like that, my Columbia tour guide told me she recieved her call the day after her interview...I'm slowly dying from this torture as well!

    Hey guys

interviewed with Yale March 3 and Columbia March 4. Rejected from UCLA.

Accepted at Columbia. Just got the call tonight.

Congratulations! Does anyone know if all the calls for painting went out? Or if they do it over the course of several days? I called the admissions office but they said they didnt know the status regarding acceptances. I feel like they would make the calls on the same day seeing as how few accepted students are..

Columbia interviewees!  What did we think of the experience?

The committee was so extremely nice and understanding even when I was stuttering pretty much the whole time bc i was SO nervous...on that note i dont think my interview went very well... one thing that kinda threw me off was i thought they'd ask me about the future direction of my work, but no mention of that at all, all questions were strictly about the work from the portfolio

I emailed them twice, and still got no response! It seems as if my emails are being ignored or something???  This is typical UCLA shenanigans, this situation is a exact replica of previous years freak out forums.  I did some research and they even forgotten to notify a few applicants of their admission decision.  Debating on withdrawing my application today...

I remember last year when I applied I never even got an email saying I was rejected, all I had to do was assume lol. And I called both the admissions office and the department of art today and noone's answering...<_< Kinda just assuming rejection at this point

I got a call from UCLA painting today!  I got in!  So pumped rite now!  I am sure others will be getting a call soon.

ahhhhh congratulations! you must be so excited! Did anyone else get a call from ULCA for painting? And did you do an interview before? (no news from my end)

And for the Hunter interviews, did anyone else get another email regarding details yet? I still haven't gotten mine and was thinking maybe I should call them or something
