I agree with everyone else that your GRE scores really don't have a big impact. My scores were 800Q 800V and 5.5AW, but I got no comments on that from the reviewers last year. The comments I got were focused on my research proposal and research background. I got an HM.

Email... ___________ Thank you for your interest in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). We will be sending out notifications to all applicants by the end of next week. We appreciate your patience. ___________ A change from "we anticipate", "we hope", "we expect" to "we will", is refreshing!

The waiting goes on... Jebus, did Carmen say next week at the earliest? The post above yours said March 19 and that is this Friday. Thanks.

Hardest part about this fellowship is that with over 800 applicants, and notifications being made by phone instead of an online list or email, if the ones who are selected don't post - it basically means the only way to find out if notifications have been made is through calling the Javits Office. I actually received a phone call from a 202 area code last Friday, and it turned out to be a friend calling from DC, not the Javits office. I think he was wondering why I sounded disappointed when he said who it was! Seems like a good idea to make an electronic notification system, like the NSF does. Judging from this website, people love to check their application status online, which makes it all the more suspenseful for this fellowship when we can't check anything except our call logs on our phones!

Here is a clip of the email from them... "We are running a little behind this year, due to the snow and the lateness of the review. I would guess that we will be able to make award annoucements by April 1 (hopefully earlier, but I'm leaving time for the Departmental clearance process)."
-
Well, either that or none of the people who were selected posted on here because they were too ecstatic to type and are rightfully jumping around the room!
-
I haven't heard anything yet. Might be a long couple of weeks if the delay goes that far... Anyone else?
-
Called the Javits office last Thursday afternoon.

What does everyone think their chances are of getting a Javits Fellowship? Post why, and some stats about yourself.
-
Decisions delayed by big snow storm a few weeks back. "If you haven't heard from us by the end of March, you were not recommended for a Javits fellowship." Looks like some more waiting...
-
Anyone heard from Javits yet? Those recommended are notified by March 1, which is next Monday. Guessing these will start going out this week! Not hopeful about my chances, but good luck to everyone.
-
Yep, congress appropriated enough for 2000 new awards this year. Pretty exciting! That doesn't change the fact that my broader impacts were not great, so I am going 35/65 that I get it.
-
Contact person at Javits said notification calls (for those recommended for the fellowship) are due out by March 1. March 1 is a Monday, so I am guessing they will all go out next week... Post if you hear anything. Good luck to everyone!

Last year they were waiting on budget information, I think this year they will actually do it on time. My guess is April 2 (also a Friday).

So, after calling the Javits people a few times, they finally found my "lost" confirmation that was supposedly sent in November. Gotta love that... hopefully they stay true to their deadline...

For everyone who has applied before and looked at their review sheets, what sort of comments did you see for intellectual merit and broader impact? I am curious as to which parts of the application reviewers see as related to intellectual merit, and which are related to broader impact. Also, were the reviewers' comments helpful to you? Thanks.

I posted what I thought below. What do you think about your chances?
-
Difficult to say good or bad chances... 4.0, 1600 GRE, 8 national conference presentations, good deal of research experience... but those are just stats. I really don't know how much stats buy you. I tried my best to address broader impacts, and I feel I justified why my research is important. The good news for everyone is they are making 1650 or so awards this year, though that also probably generated more applicants.

Thanks zxcv - I just checked into it with NSF, and they said in fact if you are in mathematics education, physics education, etc, you actually MUST apply to the mathematics or physics subfield, respectively. Glad I picked the right one! Now, for it being interesting to them... I guess we will wait and see. My undergrad was in algebraic topology, and about half the research experience I have is in pure mathematics. I got three letters of rec from my graduate school advisor and professors, and two from my undergraduate. I tried to show I was mathematically talented, but interested in education, rather than taking the education route because I couldn't do mathematics. Hopefully my stats back me up on that.

Does anyone have experience applying from an interdisciplinary program? My research is a cross between mathematics and education (specifically quantitative assessment instruments in calculus classrooms) and it was hard to find a category to apply in. I ended up applying in Mathematics - Other, as psychology did not really cover it. I have what I think is a strong application, GRE 1600, GPA 4.0, research experience on three projects in undergrad and grad (I am in my 1st year), presentations at a few national conferences, but no full publications (some have since been submitted). I am concerned I will get rejected because some might not consider my proposal fully "mathematical" as it is focused in part on education. If anyone has any thoughts or experience with this, that would be great. Hope NSF sticks to their deadlines, or this is going to be a long two months!
