I am a doctoral candidate with full dissertation research funding in need of some perspective. Are you doing, or have you done your dissertation fieldwork in Brazil? Do you have experience with a research visa? (VITEM-I) I am in an odd situation and I'd like to hear your experience. Thank you!

Hi, grad110 and alice2.0 !! Just want to let you know that I too received the no need to reapply, and that I submitted and then resubmitted a budget this AM (also got NSF). That *could* mean that they're still figuring out who is getting what and that letters have not yet been mailed. It could be longer than you're hoping.

The website is not always accurate, as it may say pending for weeks after you have been rejected. Last year I waited until late May to find out that I had been recommended for funding, but would ultimately have to reapply (got it following round, early notification). In short, there is really no way to speed up the waiting game. Our only option is to get comfortable with ambiguity. (PS this is key to thriving in academia)

I received the NSF GRFP and the NSF DDIG. The key for both of these is to mention tangible BROADER IMPACTS boldly (like, literally bold the text) and frequently. The intellectual merit is also important, but BROADER IMPACTS (like public presentations, interdisciplinary collaboration, booklets) are the types of things they are looking for.
