I applied to a number of German programs this year; here are the things I've heard: top 3 are (in no particular order) Yale, Princeton, and Chicago; Berkeley is good in view of the Rhetoric program (i.e. it is pretty theoretical); Indiana (Bloomington) may not have the name but is a very exciting program; WashU has a great reputation; not sure about Duke, UNC -- to this list I can add: Northwestern has a great German Program with Weber and Fenves; Minnesota has been regarded highly, though a bit lower than the aforementioned programs; NYU (with Ronell et al) is pretty much a continental philosophy department, which is rare; Hopkins has historically been at the forefront of things German in this country.
