  1. Have you heard anything? The MA deadline was Monday. I've been rejected everywhere else so far. It's Temple or I wait tables another year and live at home with my parents. Ahhh.

Haven't heard anything yet. I have my fingers crossed since my only offer is unfunded so far.

  2. I received the following information in an email from GWU replying to my query:

-They enroll 20-25 M.A. students per year.

-They do not offer TA's to M.A. students.

  3. I COMPLETELY agree. I mean, honestly, the tuition at GWU is far too high for them to not offer something. It does look like there were more acceptances than rejections so far which may be a bad sign for funding but who knows. I might call the secretary tomorrow to get the low down on the funding situation.

They seem to have bumped people to MA in the past but never at this level. Maybe they (like every other school in the country) are suffering budget cuts and are using this is a cash cow to fund the lucky PhDers. Maybe they are offering more MA spots with significantly reduced funding because they can't secure 5 years of funding for any students right now. At least for the time being we should celebrate our acceptances and fret about the details later. Again, I'm just happy for something positive....FINALLY!

I checked out the results search for past year and I got this from a 2009 GWU PhD acceptance:

"E-mailed to find out when decisions might be made and was told that my admission was "unlikely." Six acceptances were sent out; there are nine on the waitlist (out of 150 applications). Formal rejections won't be sent to the rest of us until they know if the available slots will be filled by these fifteen."

If the trend at GWU is like other schools there's more applicants, less funding, and less space than last year.

Anyway, I'm completely in agreement with earlymodernist - I'm just going to celebrate for now and fret later.

  4. Is it just my imagination, or was last year's history results thread much more positive (I read the whole thing about 20 times, and I wonder how many of you did the same!)? Was this truly that much worse of a year? I feel like so few of us got really great news.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was more positive. From what I've heard last year was possibly the worst year ever to apply for grad school and this year is exceeding that one in awfulness.

  5. I'm curious to hear about funding also. I wonder if they accepted anyone to their phd? This seems totally bizarre.

I think it says on their website that all their PhDs are "fully funded", so I imagine they don't accept too many PhD students. However, from the looks of the results search it seems like that number is ZERO!

  6. I'm just happy to finally be in somewhere! I had given up hope...Terminal MA or not an acceptance is cool.

I'm more interested in funding..it looks like they are bumping a lot of us to the MA program so I don't know what that means for the funding situation. It looks like the make an effort to fund all of their PhD students, but for the MA im not so sure. One of my LORs went to GWU for his MA, and he said that they offered some tuition remission and sometimes TAshis for Master's students. I just want to get my letter so I can have more answers.

Anyone else have any more info?

That's good to hear. I can't agree more on acceptance being "cool." I'm just glad to know I'm in somewhere. Hopefully there will be some funding.

I sent an email to them inquiring about PhD placement statistics for their M.A. students. I'll post the response here when I receive it.

  7. I'm holding out for an acceptance to the MA program. I can't remember if you have already completed your Masters, but if not, hold on to hope with me!

I'm in the same boat. I figured if I didn't get into the PhD here I would get the "consolation prize." Good luck!

  8. I'm just glad I've been warned about the thin letter and sporadic acceptances or I'd freak out before receipt of said letter and on receipt of the letter.

  9. How about the University of Kansas? My interest is American involvement World War 1, I know that the museum is in Kansas City (an amazing place, check it out if you're ever in the area) but I don't know if the proximity to the museum and national monument breeds academics who make WW1 their professional focus

I've heard of Kansas' program, but I honestly don't know much about it.

  10. I was too intimidated by the "positives thread", but this one I can really relate to.

The one thing that's been making me feel like i'll be rejected is my math score on my GRE---it sucked! And even though I scored in the 97 percentile on the verbal portion, I don't know it will even begin to make up for my low math score (I think it was in the 40 percentile). I also have no paid work experience, but some volunteer work that is somewhat related.

I keep trying to convince myself that my excellent LORs and high GPA will convince at least ONE adcomm to overlook that score, but i am seriously doubting myself.

My math score was in the 46th percentile while my verbal was in the 98th percentile. If you're applying in the humanities like I am, don't sweat it! What do they care about your quantitative score?

Anyway, back on topic, here's my wonderful NEGATIVES:

-When I first went to school 14 years ago I bombed out and withdrew with a just below 2.0 GPA due to the typical "I was an unfocused and irresponsible 18 year old" story you have probably heard before.

-I have a ton of withdraws on my transcript from biting off more than I could chew while commuting to school and working nearly full time or full time.

-I received an "F" in a 100 level sexism course that was required at my university. My "professor" didn't take kindly to how effectively I debated against affirmative action in a debate where I was assigned that position. I then received an "F" on my mid term because I "didn't use a quote from the textbook." I retook the class and got a B+ with another professor. Irony: I am actually pro-affirmative action.

-I made no contact with prospective professors at my schools because I foolishly believed it might be some sort of faux pas. My naïveté has since been cured but it's a little late to make contact now. I just hope they're all accepting students!

This thread is much better than the "positives" thread. Kudos to the OP!

  11. I'm waiting with baited breath for a reply from Temple. I haven't had any contact from them since they had trouble with a couple of my GRE scores in December.

  12. Are your transcripts listed as missing on the apply yourself site for Temple? I just noticed it not too long ago, but am pretty sure that my transcripts arrived in Temple's Department of History, though.

My transcripts all show "received" on the online application. Not long after I submitted Temple actually emailed me because they had a problem with my GRE scores arriving. Hopefully if there's any problem with your transcripts they would have contacted you in the same way. I guess it never hurts to check, though.

  13. I assume that my rejection letter from Harvard is already in the mail, and making its way across the Pacific Ocean to me - a second time round.

Anyone heard anything from Temple or Cornell or Hawaii?

I haven't heard anything from Temple or Cornell. My online application at GWU says that I am "under review" or something to that extent.

  14. Everything Nicholas Cage has ever been in has been terrible, with the exception of Raising Arizona and Adaptation. Just my opinion.

Especially Captain Corelli's Mandolin, where his Italian accent sounded like a drunk at a party imitating an Italian.

  15. I've worked in a number of professions over the years, and fin that most people have little grasp on any profession they themselves don't do. Moreover, many are quick to make assumptions about other professions with only a caricature-level understanding. Movies/TV both reflect and perpetuate this.

There's a scary Ronald Reagan quote that I used in a paper and I love to repeat: “It is the motion picture that shows us not only how we look and sound, but - more important - how we feel.”

It's a scary thought that a majority of the population not only have their decisions made on how themselves and others look and sound, but also have their own feelings determined for them... especially when it comes from a man who was the president of the Screen Actor's Guild during the Red Scare and unabashedly testified against actors he believed were communist sympathizers.
