  1. Ohio State has one of the best military history programs, so definitely apply there.

    Did anyone accept GWU's offer?

    Temple

Haven't heard anything yet. I have my fingers crossed since my only offer is unfunded so far.

    GW History

I received the following information in an email from GWU replying to my query: -They enroll 20-25 M.A. students per year. -They do not offer TA's to M.A. students.
  5. is at least accepted to an MA program. YAY!

I checked out the results search for past year and I got this from a 2009 GWU PhD acceptance: "E-mailed to find out when decisions might be made and was told that my admission was "unlikely." Six acceptances were sent out; there are nine on the waitlist (out of 150 applications). Formal rejections won't be sent to the rest of us until they know if the available slots will be filled by these fifteen." If the trend at GWU is like other schools there's more applicants, less funding, and less space than last year. Anyway, I'm completely in agreement with earlymodernist - I'm just going to celebrate for now and fret later.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was more positive. From what I've heard last year was possibly the worst year ever to apply for grad school and this year is exceeding that one in awfulness.

I think it says on their website that all their PhDs are "fully funded", so I imagine they don't accept too many PhD students. However, from the looks of the results search it seems like that number is ZERO!

That's good to hear. I can't agree more on acceptance being "cool." I'm just glad to know I'm in somewhere. Hopefully there will be some funding. I sent an email to them inquiring about PhD placement statistics for their M.A. students. I'll post the response here when I receive it.

    Temple

I'm in the same boat. I figured if I didn't get into the PhD here I would get the "consolation prize." Good luck!

It's not looking good for those of us without acceptances yet if they're doling out funding, I suppose!

I'm just glad I've been warned about the thin letter and sporadic acceptances or I'd freak out before receipt of said letter and on receipt of the letter.
  13. I've heard of Kansas' program, but I honestly don't know much about it.
  14. Ohio State may be the best military history program in the U.S. I've heard that UNC is pretty good too.
  15. My math score was in the 46th percentile while my verbal was in the 98th percentile. If you're applying in the humanities like I am, don't sweat it! What do they care about your quantitative score? Anyway, back on topic, here's my wonderful NEGATIVES: -When I first went to school 14 years ago I bombed out and withdrew with a just below 2.0 GPA due to the typical "I was an unfocused and irresponsible 18 year old" story you have probably heard before. -I have a ton of withdraws on my transcript from biting off more than I could chew while commuting to school and working nearly full time or full time. -I received an "F" in a 100 level sexism course that was required at my university. My "professor" didn't take kindly to how effectively I debated against affirmative action in a debate where I was assigned that position. I then received an "F" on my mid term because I "didn't use a quote from the textbook." I retook the class and got a B+ with another professor. Irony: I am actually pro-affirmative action. -I made no contact with prospective professors at my schools because I foolishly believed it might be some sort of faux pas. My naïveté has since been cured but it's a little late to make contact now. I just hope they're all accepting students! This thread is much better than the "positives" thread. Kudos to the OP!

    Temple

I'm waiting with baited breath for a reply from Temple. I haven't had any contact from them since they had trouble with a couple of my GRE scores in December.
  17. I'm glad I didn't apply to Yale. I like variety in my rejections.
  18. I'll give a +1 to sounding desperate. I think it would be a bad idea.
  19. For a wacky 1980's movie associated with academia see Real Genius with Val Kilmer.

You can add me to the list of people who has heard nothing from UPenn.

    History 2010

My transcripts all show "received" on the online application. Not long after I submitted Temple actually emailed me because they had a problem with my GRE scores arriving. Hopefully if there's any problem with your transcripts they would have contacted you in the same way. I guess it never hurts to check, though.

    History 2010

I haven't heard anything from Temple or Cornell. My online application at GWU says that I am "under review" or something to that extent.
  24. Especially Captain Corelli's Mandolin, where his Italian accent sounded like a drunk at a party imitating an Italian.
  25. There's a scary Ronald Reagan quote that I used in a paper and I love to repeat: “It is the motion picture that shows us not only how we look and sound, but - more important - how we feel.” It's a scary thought that a majority of the population not only have their decisions made on how themselves and others look and sound, but also have their own feelings determined for them... especially when it comes from a man who was the president of the Screen Actor's Guild during the Red Scare and unabashedly testified against actors he believed were communist sympathizers.
