  1. What's more important? A supportive learning community and a cohesive department with less similar research interests or a faculty advisor whose interests match your own most closely, though she may be an outlier in a somewhat dysfunctional department. Also, are there substantial differences in ranking between UC Santa Cruz and Davis?
  2. Help! I'm choosing between two similar programs (PhDs,education, both UCs). With one program, my research interests are very well aligned with my intended advisor. However, I heard the department was somewhat disfunctional and that my advisor can be hard to work with (either love her or hate her). Otherwise, I have way more funding here, the students I've talked to are smart and I'd be able to hone in on a myriad of interests. The other school was described by one student as a "huge hug" with a super supportive vibe. My advisors are great, the people are nice. The program is less specifically tailored to my interests, and in fact no one (faculty or students) are doing research similar to my own. I'd be able to do my thing by working with other departments and they seem to have lots of opportunities for research apprenticeships, whereas I don't get the same sense from the other program. I am seriously torn! What matters more- mutually aligned interests or a supportive learning community?? Help!
  3. I applied to LLC and when I contacted admissions 2 days ago, they said they were still making decisions and that I could expect to hear in the coming weeks. Does this mean im actually rejected?
  4. Has anyone heard from UC Berkekey's GSE? I'm waiting on pins and needles!
  5. Don't know how I missed all this. Thank you!
  6. Does this exist? I can't seem to find a ton of information on the site. It says they have a coterminal and terminal masters but I'd love more information. Can anyone help? Thanks!
  7. I'm a history teacher and want to do a masters in order to expand my knowledge. Does anyone know anything about UCSCs program? How long does it take? It seems like most jump straight to the PHD which I'm not yet sure I want to do.
  8. Hi All, I am in the process of updating my resume and am wondering about the best resume format for applications. The resume I've used in the past is pretty fancy in format and when I investigate models, most CVs are pretty plain and straightforward. Should I alter my resume to look more like there? The other thing is,while I have tons of relevant work experience, I don't have a ton of research besides my college and masters theses, neither of which have been published. I've never presented at conferences and therefore, when put in CV format, my resume looks pretty meager. My questions are what should I highlight on my resume and what format should I use for apps? A bit about me: I'm applying to international comparative education programs at Stanford, Berkeley, Santa Cruz, and Davis. Feedback welcome! Thanks!
  9. Hi All, I'm in a similar situation-- I took my GRE yesterday and ended up with a 166 V/150 Q; still don't know my writing score. My undergrad GPA is a 3.6 and my Masters in Teaching GPA is a 3.9. I've taught for 6 years in low-income communities and have done international work in many developing countries. My aim is to pursue doctoral programs in International Comparative Education and I'm currently planning to apply to at UC Berkeley, Stanford, Davis, and Santa Cruz. I'm wondering: are my GRE scores prohibitively low? Will my quant score preclude me from getting into these programs? As a follow up, if I take the GRE again do I have to send both sets of scores to the schools? I already sent my scores from yesterday (though am regretting it somewhat). Thoughts? Thank you!
