@northeastregional have you ever heard the phrase: "If everyone you encounter is an asshole, maybe you're the asshole?" You're married, you're not in academia, and, god willing, you have at least one hobby or interest that's not trolling people on the internet. So, as many of us have requested of you before: please, just leave us be.

    Amen

This 11-page thread says otherwise. Thanks to FERPA, there is no data on admittance vs. completion, which is why I began: "In my experience..." And I don't know anyone who has dropped out for any of the reasons you mentioned, but maybe their experiences are buried in the "etc. etc." It would be false logic if tweaking your application led to different results more often than not, but that's simply not the case. We should poll the repeat applicants from this year to the next - I predict little change.

I agree that a rejection isn't necessarily a reflection of your ability to succeed. I just don't believe that everyone posting on this thread is the exception - most of you are, by definition, the rule. I'm not wringing my hands over the job market, top-ten or otherwise. I am married to a TT professor in the field and I have no plans to enter the academic track, so the job market doesn't affect me at all.

@MaytheSchwartzBeWithYou I could not agree more with what you are saying.

Northeastregional - I called you out on this a while ago and it seems like your responses are continuing to impress. This is not meant to be a negative forum. You continue to troll here, posting comments that are exceedingly negative. You are not even an applicant! So why are you here? The level of intelligence of people who have contributed to these 11 pages is not low and people do understand the gravity of being a grad student and that the job market is far from ideal. No one here is a fortune teller and no one knows if applying a second or even third time will bring them to the right school but it has for many in the field of art history, so unless you are going to offer actual advice pertaining to this, keep your opinions to yourself. It is absolutely none of your business to assume whether or not people are the exception or the rule. Being married to someone in the field does not make you an expert, it makes you a bit more knowledgeable than the average person but beyond that there is nothing. If you were genuinely offering people valuable advice in a respectable manner I would have no issue with the statements you are making what so ever, but all you have done is be exceedingly rude. If you are not going to offer anything of actual value or perspective that can be put in a positive way, then please stop commenting in this forum.

After receiving the second rejection, I am devastated... still have a few more schools to hear from, but not a lot. I see a few results from other schools that I have applied, and that makes it even worse. This is painful. I am worried about getting rejected from all the programs - which would be dreadful. Anyone else in similar situation?

I have been rejected from 4 schools, no yes and am not anticipating one! Gotta change your mindset- yes it is devastating now but maybe this will be a good thing for you and another avenue will appear. :)

I know we are still waiting on UPenn, but is anyone else waiting to hear back from BU? Those two results from a few weeks ago are really diminishing my hope, haha.

I havent seen anyone comment on Penn but I am also losing hop on BU

Perhaps this is a bit of a silly question, but in your opinion, how much does a school's name and ranking matter when choosing a Ph.D. program (especially when looking for teaching/curatorial jobs after graduation)? Is it better to choose 1. A program that is not very highly ranked but has good funding, faculty, and atmosphere or 2. A program that is more prestigious but not a great fit?

Unfortunately it does make a difference, if you are wanting to try to pursue a career in teaching.

I just sat on a hiring committee and the school you came from did make a difference. It is not the most important aspect but the better schools often lead to better connections which is the key aspect when in the job market following completion of your dissertation.

Hey guys! Can anyone offer insight on what Art history PhD interviews are like? Anyone here who has had one this application season?

Hey- I haven't had one but from people I have spoken to it can vary quite a bit. From simply discussing your research interests and or answering fairly difficult questions about work that is outside of your field. It is good to have a general knowledge of the works of your POI's as well as others who have worked on research similar to yours so you can demonstrate your knowledge of the field / subject matter.

I've answered this twice already via pm so maybe I should just say outright: I am either directly affiliated with, friends with, or married to someone affiliated with each of those institutions, at both grad student (one of the three) and faculty (two of the three) levels.

There is no need to be hostile- we don't know what you say to people in private messages.

We are all stressed and trying to go through this together so let us all be civil and cordial with each other. And most importantly, supportive.

FYI Delaware meets on Friday. Penn also meets this week. Maryland waiting on funding approval for their cohort from the university admins.

How do you know this? haha, not that I doubt you just curious.

I'm going to cry if I get in or do not with Penn. So I am just trying to anticipate when my meltdown should be.

I'm the BU admit! Thanks for the well wishes.

@rococo_realism I chose to apply to schools in Boston over NYC for the same reason. I thought it was at least a tiny bit more affordable in Boston.

@lasirko Best of luck with BU! Mine was just a good research connection with my POI. My GRE's weren't exactly stellar, but otherwise everything just fell into place. I was honestly a bit surprised. I expected to be sent to MA program without any funding. Best of luck to you!!

@m-artman I am in the same boat for the GRES, writing was good the rest was a disaster. What time period of art history do you study :)

    Hey all,

I'm a new member, long time lurker. I'm a classical archaeologist who applied to Duke's Visual Studies/Art History Program. Anyone else applied there? Heard anything? I see one person posted an email on the results page but didn't add any details...

    Thanks!

    Hey there-

I am also classical art, however I did not apply to Duke as no one there met my interests. I do know however from my friend that is in the middle of her PhD there for classical arch that they are having their prospective student weekend next week.

  11. oh, exciting!

I am Roman art. My MA is in ancient history but I do not have strong enough of a language background to apply directly into classics, plus i love art! So I applied strictly art history.

Have you heard back from anyone thus far? Silence on my end.
