Also, I wouldn't be afraid to just openly email and ask faculty you're interested in if they have positions. My current research associate position was obtained by cold-emailing a faculty that didn't have an opening at the time, but still hired me on the spot, and now I make a decent amount just doing research.

Any advice on this? I cold emailed a lot for grad school applications, but it feels way more intimidating to do it for a paid position they aren't advertising. Did you attach a CV or anything like that in the initial email, and how were you able to (respectfully) make it clear you were looking for a full time paid position, not to volunteer?

Money makes everything more complicated :(

  2. I've decided to buffer myself by applying to research-based experimental psychology Masters programs. I chose to only apply to schools that offer funding for their psychology Masters programs, since I am not in the position to take out more loans. On the application pages, all the schools ask me if I am planning to get loans to pay for my education; since these are all programs that are known to fund at least a good portion of their MS/MA students it kind of threw me off. Is there a chance that not applying for graduate loans makes me a less appealing candidate?

I did a Skype interview with my POI in social psych at UW-Seattle. Their interview is scheduled around this weekend some time, and they've finalized their invitations. I can't remember the exact date because I didn't make the in-person cut.

Ok thanks! And sorry to hear :(

Rutgers social had their interview on the 19th!

I thought I had seen something like that but I wasn't sure if they differentiated between the 2 campuses on interview dates. Thanks for the confirmation!

  5. I saw this posted on the SPSP CareerConnect page and I really want to apply, but I'm waiting to hear back from grad apps still (especially the MA one's I've just submitted) and don't want to potentially commit to a position until I know for sure. Do you know how long the timeline is? I saw that they will keep taking applications until the position is filled but I just can't imagine a great position like this one will stay open for long! Which is unfortunate because it's absolutely perfect for my interests.

Yeah, I applied to Rutgers New Brunswick for social psych as well, but I'm confused-- what parts of psych are located at Newark and what parts are at New Brunswick?

I've no idea. I saw that my POI was located in New Brunswick so that's the one I applied to when the application asked me to specify.

  7. I almost have a mini heart attack every time I see a school I applied to on the search results page, before noticing it's all for clinical programs right now!

I applied to the Rutgers New Brunswick, but out of curiosity, if the people who got invites from Rutgers Newark wouldn't mind sharing their POI (over PM) that would be great!

    Hi all,

2 weeks ago a professor contacted me and asked whether I'm interested in her lab. I replied yes and also expressed my interest in talking to her. However, it has been around 2 weeks and I have not heard from her. In this case, I wonder if I should send her a follow-up message and to remind her again that I am interested in her lab just in case my previous reply got lost in the shuffle or should I take it as a "NO?"

    Thanks!

2 weeks ago was right before Christmas and New Years and many schools are still on vacation - many don't check their email during the holidays, except maybe to spare a cursory glance. That's a consideration too.

MysticFog- that page with the interview time range was updated like 2012, so it might have been true at the time. On the cynical side I do though also believe especially from experience that they tend to either be very ambiguous or exaggerate toward the later dates so they don't get inundated with status checks

Well from when invites tend to out versus when the program says invitations will go out, it seems that this may be the case. I can certainly understand why, but it does suck for those of us holding out without realizing that invites have already been sent.

I can say what they did last year, which was send out an email to all applicants invited for interview in mid-December. The interviews are not broken down by sub-area like Social, as some other programs may do (eg NYU).

There was a post around mid-December again this year -- check the results again. The Social-Organizational posts from past years are Teachers College. If you applied Social to the regular Columbia Psych, I believed it's technically called General or Experimental Psych PhD. They used to have a separate Social program but not anymore

Ah I see. One of my advisors friends went to Columbia when they did have a separate Social program, so I was expecting it to be under Social, not Experimental.  I certainly wasn't expecting the invitations to go out so soon, especially since their website said January, but the more I think about it, I'm sure they just say Jan to give themselves a buffer in case they fall behind. Thank's for clearing that up!

    Ah well. 5 to go!

all Columbia interviews are likely to have been sent out already. They sent a mass email last year around mid-December, and someone posted an interview result again this year around that same time.

Michigan Social doesn't seem to send out results until mid-January, so I doubt anyone who's applying Social has been accepted yet.

There have only been about 20 results total for Social psych programs on GradCafe. Social doesn't seem to really get going until a week or so into January.

I haven't seen anything posted in the search results page for Columbia Social PHD yet, and it looks like that will go out around mid-Jan from the results of previous years. Looks like the only thing that's Sent out this early is MA stuff through Columbia teachers college.

Trying to balance between continuing to live my life and realizing that Plan B may turn into a reality if things don't work out. Lots of self-care. And spending time with my cats :)

Animals are fantastic support - I'll be spending time with friends who have dogs so hopefully that will help!

Is it standard practice for social programs to do admissions interviews? I've been through the application process once before for clinical psych programs, and I've never heard of a clinical program that didn't interview. But I applied to the social psych program at UC Santa Cruz, and past results on gradcafe are all accepted/rejected with the exception of a few "informal interviews." I tried contacting the program about a week ago to ask about it, but all I have is an email address and I haven't heard back. Does it make sense that they wouldn't interview at all?

Depends on the program I suppose. My programs all do, but there are always programs who go against the norm.

So what is everyone doing to hold themselves at bay? I'm focusing on conferences I have coming up and analyzing data. I think the worst part about waiting is that the majority of the waiting period is done over winter break, when we aren't buried under a pile of school work.

@Mystic_Fog I'm completely broke but I'd live off eggs for another few months if I could apply to more colleges. I would apply to a 16th but I've already overextended my LORs, I think. but my GRE scores are not great as well. They're OK for  a masters program (or at least the bare minimum), but I would never apply to a PhD program with them. I'll probably be in that pile with you as well.

I didn't want to overextend my LOR's as well, but with 16 you should be ok!

This is my third time applying to clinical programs. My plan B my first year was to get into an experimental program, which I did. My plan B for the next two cycles has basically been to get some sort of research job, which will hopefully be easier now that I have a Masters degree.

Sounds pretty solid; I think getting a research position is a fairly common Plan B.

How nice to hear I'm not the only one that finds preparing a Plan B reduces anxiety early on.  This is not my first rodeo so here's what I've done....

    1st Application Cycle

Thoughts - How dare they not accept me!  Don't they know how amazing I am?!  I'll reapply and then they'll realize what a foolish mistake they made before (in my youthful brain this made sense, but now it causes sidesplitting laughter).

    Plan B - Research Master's programs

    2nd Application Cycle

Thoughts - Ok I guess I'm getting a Master's.  Am I sure I still want to go the PhD route?  The application process is tiring and expensive.

Plan B - Complete Master's program, retake GRE, gain more research experience, and further clarify my research interests.

    3rd Application Cycle

Thoughts - Even though it was tiring and expensive I'm glad I doubled the number of schools I applied to.  *sigh* Do I really have to come up with another Plan B?!

Plan B - Gain more research experience.  Should I have to go this route I'm sure I'll expand on this, but right now nothing comes to mind.

I hope this cycle is your cycle! Sounds like you've done a lot - how has getting the Masters panned out for you? I think this is another common backup, but I don't know if it helps get you the experience you need or is just a good way to boost your GPA. I should have applied to Masters programs, but I didn't.

This is my first application cycle..feeling super nervous about it all. I applied to 14 schools ( originally was 8 but my adviser from my masters told me I needed to "cast  a wider net" which equally translates to casting a wider wallet :l ..). In any case, I'm currently in a research fellowship with the military so I will likely stay here, however, I've also prospectively been offered a spot at the MGH martinos center to work with someone who has a more fine tuned focus on my research interests.

With that being said, I would highly recommend that anyone looking for research experience take a look at the ORISE research program. It's a government contractor position  with a very generous stipend thay is presented as a fellowship award (great thing to add to resume!) in various research outlets, but for example, I work with a neuropsych group that focuses on warfighter cognition as a function of mTBI, PTSD, postconcussive disorders etc. They fund conference travel and you collect field data so more often than not, you get to travel and see parts of the US!

Wow! Did you really find 14 schools with good research fit? I could only find a dozen, but I see you're doing clinical so there may be more wiggle room when it comes to research there. Thanks for the heads up or the ORISE program!

This is my 2nd attempt applying for doctorate Clinical Psychology programs. For the past year, my "Plan B" consisted of working a crappy retail job while struggling immensely to land a paid research position in a psychology lab by applying for postings all around the United States. Then halfway through the year, I was very blessed to have a former psychology professor connect me with an open research position at my alma mater's psychology department, and I've been working full-time as a Clinical Research Assistant ever since.

Glad to hear that you've landed a research position! I hope it's going well!

I have no idea. I'm applying to 15 colleges, so if I got rejected from every single college it would be a major blow to me, like I'm not grad school material. I'd probably still end up applying the next cycle, but I would fill time by...

    1. lamenting that my favorite colleges didn't accept me (even if it wasn't due to my application)
    2. finding a job out of state that relates to my field
    3. moving out of state
    4. continuing to research
    5. losing weight
    6. studying for and retaking the GRE
    7. feeling glad because my 3.5 Spring 2015 GPA would be my 3.64 Spring 2016 final GPA

Have any of you applied to 4+ colleges at once and got rejected from them all? it's one thing if you apply to 3 colleges and get rejected, but if you apply to 15 colleges, that's saying something imho

I'm applying to 6 (I couldn't afford to do more than that) . Really I think it depends on the caliber of the program - I applied to several top schools and only one more modest program, but my applications were based 100% on fit of research interest. If I get denied I'll be very upset, but I also know my GRE scores may put me in a lower-priority pile that keeps me from getting accepted. And there are other programs I'll be able to apply to next year that I couldn't this year due to financial restraints. I'll also have some additional experiences on my CV by then that could make me stronger.

Not getting into 16 would be rough, but that doesn't necessarily mean you aren't a good candidate! These programs are super competitive and sometimes tiny, arbitrary things are what it comes down to.

  16. I've been thinking, on my post-application anxiety, about what on Earth I'll do if I don't get accepted this year.

My Plan B is essentially to find a job in a lab or some other research-oriented job, save money to take a GRE course and re-take the test, start paying off my loans, and re-apply next year.

Its obviously not my ideal gig, but it's not all that bad and I've found that having a backup plan I'm content with makes me a lot more relaxed about my prospects. So I'm curious to know - what are your backup plans? Will you take a year and re-apply or is this the only (or last) year you think you'll apply.

For people who've applied in previous cycles and used a Plan B - what did you do and how do you think it helped you?

When I listen to a podcast or music in my lab, I keep one earbud in and one out, just in case someone needs to speak with me. When I listen to podcasts, I keep the earbud in my right ear because the right ear hooks up with the left auditory cortex, which is more devoted to speech perception (right ear advantage). When I listen to music, I keep the earbud in my left ear because the left ear hooks up with the right auditory cortex, which is more devoted to music perception (left ear advantage).

Anyone else do this, or is that weird?

I have a well-known reputation in my department for blasting music in my ears obnoxiously loud (among other things) but it's something they find endearing more than anything so it's okay! So I don't do anything like this at all.

However, I would echo @Piagetsky in that it is some hardcore psych major stuff for cure!

Depends on the school. I have a mix of both but I never listed more than two.

Same here. I've also heard that if you talk about multiple POI's they want to know who your first pick is, and generally speaking, the people who are your second, third, etc will rarely consider you since you presumably have a better fit with someone else. So in mine I discussed one, but for UW I discussed two because they wanted you to; I specifically, highlighted the similarities their research had to mine but discussed why one may be a slightly better fit than the other.

Okay, so a couple of the schools I'm applying to say "all materials need to be in by the deadline," which is today. Long story short, my GREs and transcripts may not be there today... what are the chances they'll take unofficial stuff for preliminary review so long as the other stuff gets there within the week? Or are they really going to axe my application because my stuff wasn't there? :( I'm panicking, especially about Kent State because it's my top choice.

Have you called and asked? I work in one of the labs there and they are pretty flexible. Many places will accept unofficial stuff for preliminary review, but that's something you need to clarify with them individually. They are unlikely to begin looking at stuff right away so as long as you have  a placeholder you might be okay. Worth a shot.
