  1. Is it tough to get into the graduate program at George Washington University? They have a masters and a PhD program. Does anyone know what the cut off scores for the GRE and GPA's are? How competitive is it? The faculty are graduates from respected universities and are well published but it is shockingly ranked at #58 given it is such a well established university with generous endowment.
  2. If this is true, why do universities have separate masters econ programs for students to apply to along with PhD programs? Why dont they just have a PhD program?
  3. I'm thinking of applying to the GWU stats program. How tough is it to get in? Does anyone the min gpa? gre scores? Their web site is pretty vague - just have a B or above undergraduate gpa and take matrix algebra and multivariable calculus. So a psych major with a 3.0 can get in if they take those classes?
  4. I am curious, and I don't mean to be a smart alec, did you consider that before applying for the program? You can always be a financial analyst at a bank or for the government with a MA. PhD would be largely research from what I am reading. I already work in that sector and we have tons of MA econ majors to answer your question.
  5. Does your school retain rejected applications? If so, they probably will not know you ever applied to it before so you would not need to worry. But you already proved yourself with them with your MA in econ unless PhD requirements are different so you need to check that. I am in a somewhat similar situation - BS in engineering gpa 3.2 ms policy 3.7 now applying for MA econ but for engineering, 3.2 is good because it is incredibly difficult with a high drop out rate. Any rational member on the graduate application team would understand that (same is true for physics). I am proud I graduated with such a difficult degree with a gpa higher than 3 and didnt wuss out and change majors to something significantly less challenging like most people in my freshman class did.
  6. Research experience for the masters program? Really? That would make sense for the PhD program especially if their MA program is geared towards public policy. Did the people you know have undergraduage degrees in economics or did they graduate with other degrees? Do you know how many students they accept per year? Bummer they only accept fall applicants. GMU is my first choice, it just seems so unique.
  7. I am interested in applying for their MA program (not interested in obtaining a PhD in the future) mainly because I am interested in Austrian economics. Has anyone attended GMU for economics? If so, how was it? What is their application process like and is the emphasis in grades or SOP or SOL or GRE? I am curious as to what they look for in a candidate because it seems like such an offbeat program yet it has some highly respected professors. Thanks
