  1. just got notice that I was not accepted into the Ryerson part time BSW program. I guess I had no idea this was going to be competitive, and thought I would get in. I don't have the grades or experience for an MSW, so I thought I would aim lower. shit, now what?
  2. Hi guys, Has anyone heard anything about the Windsor working professionals MSW? I am wondering how the program compares to other schools.
  3. Hi, Does anyone know when Lakehead sends out acceptance letters for the HBSW program?
  4. Hi all,I am considering applying to the MSW for working professionals (non-BSW) at U of Windsor (peel location). My grades are 2 points shy of what they post as a minimum requirement. Do you know if they may consider candidates who do not meet this requirement, but can write a letter explaining why grades are low?I also applied to the HBSW program at Lakehead, and the 3 year part time BSW at Ryerson.Good luck!

  6. Oh, that's interesting! They are asking for 2 years work experience for the 3 year part time BSW there. Maybe they changed the requirements! Were you able to work full time while doing the BSW with Dal? If it was online, was getting references from profs a bit of a challenge?
  7. Hey, thanks SocialWERK! I am glad my plan makes sense, even though it sounds crazy at the outset to get another degree, but I agree the benefits will be significant even before getting an MSW. It would be with Ryerson part-time so that I can still work full time. I have been working in the field directly after graduating, but this will open up so, so many other opportunities! Question: Do I need to usually have the required number of years experience when I am applying, or is it sufficient to get that number in just before I start the program? 2 years work experience required. Or maybe I should ask Ryerson directly.... Thanks!
  8. Hello all, I have been lurking for a bit, and want to get an MSW but am trying to look at my options realistically. I have a 4 year BA in another field with a poor GPA (71%). This GPA will probably not get me into a 2 year MSW. Would it be better to take online courses to improve my GPA, and then apply with a higher GPA (which would be really nerve wracking if I didn't get in to an MSW program), or should I do a BSW that is 3 years part time (which I have a good chance of getting into), and hopefully get good grades in that, which will open the door for more 1 year MSW programs to apply to? I just think the fear of rejection, from applying over and over would be stressful. I have an SSW from George Brown as well as well as work experience in the field, although not a ton. I am an older applicant and want to get moving with this! Thanks
  9. Hello all, Congrats to all those applicants that have been accepted, and fingers crossed for those waiting to be accepted into programs. I have been lurking here for a bit, and want to get an MSW but am looking at my options realistically. I have a 4 year BA from U of Toronto in another field with a poor GPA (71%). This GPA will not get me into a 2 year MSW. Would it be better to take online courses to improve my GPA, and then apply with a higher GPA (which would be really nerve wracking if I didn't get in), or should I do a BSW that is 3 years part time, and hopefully get good grades in that, which will open the door for more 1 year MSW programs to apply to? I just think the application stress and fear of rejection, from applying over and over would really get to me. I have an SSW from George Brown as well. Thank you!
  10. dear Lightning 1129, You have been a goldmine of information, thank you for the excellent excellent suggestion of Lakehead! Lots to think about here, I will read more of the thread pages. If its possible, would you be able to give me your email address if I have other questions? I am also in Toronto. Thanks again!
  11. Hello all, I am interested in applying for the MSW program at U of T. However I am just finishing up my BA in December, and haven't any professors or enough other referees who would be able to write me a reference. I know that my profile would be too weak for consideration at this point (my GPA is also weak). I thought that in the meantime I may be interested in applying for the fast track Social Service Worker programme at George Brown (it takes one year), that way I would also see if I like working in a social service setting before spending two years studying to get my Masters (which would be a lot of hard work). If I enjoy the work and want to take the MSW later I still can. Does that sound like a reasonable career path, or is it better that I just volunteer a lot over the next few years and get good references and then later apply for my MSW if social work is what interests me? Also, is there a great deal of difference between what a social service worker and a social worker can do in terms of working directly with the public? I am not really interested in policy at this stage. About me: After having worked in administration for the last 8 years I have returned to university to get my last year of my Hons BA done. I have also been volunteering at a Distress centre since July. Thanks!
