  1. I want to go on for a PhD in either social psych or sociology. My BA will be in psychology with a minor in women's and gender studies. I got accepted into Simmons' MA in Gender/Cultural Studies, and Brandeis' dual MA in Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies. If I go to Brandeis, I will be much more prepared in sociology should I decide to go on for a sociology PhD, which is what I'm leaning more towards. Yet, Simmons was my first choice all along and I think I will love the school and the environment much more. Brandeis would end up being more expensive even though they gave me more aid. I feel like program-wise I should go with Brandeis, but I really don't want to pass up the chance to be a part of Simmons. Every time I have spoken to the program director or the admissions officer, they told me they loved my application and they really hope I choose Simmons. I asked for more aid and they are currently working on that as well. Is it dumb not to go with a Sociology MA if I want a Sociology PhD, just because I think I'd love Simmons? I spoke to the program director at Simmons and she said people go on to get PhDs in many different disciplines after earning that Masters. There are also sociology classes as part of the GCS masters at Simmons. It wouldn't not prepare me for sociology, since I want to study sociology of gender and this is basically a masters in gender, it just wouldn't prepare me as much as a dual MA in sociology/gender studies. Help!
  2. I was accepted to Simmons for a M.A., which was my first choice, but they only awarded me $4,000, compared to Brandeis who awarded me $18,000 a year. In the letter from Simmons it says "This award is not automatically renewed, you must speak with your program director about further awards." I have already been in contact with the director about other things and I am visiting next week, so I don't want to send too many emails, but does this sound like they are only going to give me $4,000 for the first year and that's it? Or does it sound like it's contingent upon good GPA? I called today and was put on hold for a half hour so I'm going to try again tomorrow but I'm just wondering what people think. I have a 3.8 GPA, I'm in 2 academic honor societies, I'm about to be published and I'm writing an honors thesis, so only receiving $4,000 is a little strange to me, to be honest. The program director also told me she was excited by my application, and it's a small program so I have a feeling they do remember specific applicants. Simmons also only costs about $30,000 for the whole masters compared to Brandeis which is around $38,000 a year.
  3. Hi everyone, This is probably a dumb question but here goes: I have yet to hear back from Simmons (they do rolling admission and I applied almost 3 weeks ago so I am not too worried) but I got a letter in the mail asking me to fill out an additional financial aid form. I filled out the FAFSA but I overlooked the Simmons form. I sent that in today, but my question is, is this any kind of positive indication? Why would they be calculating financial aid if I was not going to get in? Again, I understand that they need all the forms anyway but I am just wondering what other people think.
  4. I applied to Simmons' Gender and Cultural Studies MA, Brandeis' Sociology/Women's and Gender Studies MA, and Northeastern's Sociology MA, where I'd like to focus on sociology of gender.
