Hey everyone, i know that many people on this dicussion board, this i there second or third time applying to MSW programs (and congrats too all of you that got in)

I was hoping to seek some support from all of you, and get some advice.

This was my first year applying to a 2 Year MSW program (i currently am completing my undergrad in the field of child and youth care) . I applied to york, where i got rejected  and U Of T where I got waitlisted.

ideally, like many of you it was my dream to obtain my MSW! long story short the reason I want to obtain my MSW is so that I can Work not only with Children but also within the Field of Geriatrics.

Any advice on other programs I should apply to next year, advice on how i should enhance my application?  (as I know many of you this is your second time applying and have more experience, with applications and knowledge of what the process has looked like)

    I greatly appreciate you help!!!

Wishing you all the best in your future!

    Hello,

This was my second year applying, last year I was rejected from all the schools I applied to and this year I have been waitlisted at UofT.

Other than MSWs and post degree BSWs I applied to Ryerson and UBC for their Master of Arts in Early Childhood Education and was accepted to both schools. I would definitely recommend applying to this program next year since you would like to work with children, unfortunately there would be no work with geriatrics with this degree.

    All the best! :)

    Hi Everyone,

For those who are applying to the Two Year MSW at UofC a first round of admissions went out the second week of February. I heard that all the decisions have been made this week and we will all be hearing what will happen next couple of weeks. For emilym123 and kjackson what program are you stream did you apply to? And what is your experience going into the MSW? I've heard that UofC is very competitive. Anxious to see what happens!

Good luck to everyone who is still waiting and congrats to those who are already accepted to a program!

    Hi,

I applied to the clinical stream at U of Calgary. I graduated last May so I've been doing a lot of volunteering on the extended care unit of the hospital with the recreational therapist and I've also been volunteering at a family resource center that has a bunch of different programs for various needs, such as families with financial needs or mental health issues. I've also volunteered at my universities women's center and I've been doing teaching assistant work and research assistant work and took a couple extra classes first semester to increase my GPA.

    What about yourself?

Hey everyone! Congrats to everyone who has been accepted :)
I don't see a ton of posts about University of Calgary's MSW... I'm anxiously awaiting to find out about the 2 year program. Is there anyone else out there waiting for the same one (or has anyone else heard either way?) I'm not sure how much longer my sanity is going to hang in there!

I'm still waiting to hear from Calgary for their 2 year program as well :/

I've been noticing on this forum that most people didn't apply to MSW at York U, is there a reason for that?

I just saw a rejection status from the program myself last week. It's actually my top choice for MSW because of its anti-oppressive framework.

I called York but they said they do not offer advice to improve your application. Is it worth re-applying?

Anyone with previous York MSW program, please share!

    Thank you,

    Emily

    Hello,

I've applied to York's 2 year MSW, but I haven't heard anything from them or checked recently. I was rejected from York last year, it's always worth reapplying if it's what you really want. :)

Anyone know when 2 year MSW acceptances for U of T started to roll in last year? I never paid attention to last year's forum and theres too many pages for me to dig through

I have a friend who was accepted to the 2 year MSW at U of T last year and he got his acceptance some time in March last year, but said he knows people who didn't get their acceptance til April and May

St. Thomas is my first choice too!! i also applied to Calgary MSW, a masters of Counseling at UNBC and Lakehead Uni HBSW.So you would prefer to do the postgrad in social work than the masters?

Lakehead is down the list for me cause it starts this summer -.-

Well between St.Thomas and Lakehead St.Thomas is my first choice, but overall Toronto would be my first choice.

Yeah the fact that Lakehead starts in the summer is what's throwing me off too

If you went 200 words over I would DEFINITELY cut down. The point of the word limit is to show that you can write an effective statement succinctly, so I think it definitely sends a bad message if you go over to the point that it's noticeable. If the word limit was 700 I'm sure even would be more than happy to go up to that limit, so writing within the guidelines also makes it more equitable :)

Thank you, I cut back, it took a while, but I got it down to 500.

Does anyone know how strict U of T is with word limit? I'm over by a little less than 50 words (out of 500 max.) on one of the questions and am having a lot of trouble reducing it. I've been googling about this issue and many people said 10% over the word limit is acceptable... Also, 50 words is just 3~4lines extra.. :/ Any input would be appreciated! :)

I hope they aren't too strict on word count because I went around 200 words over for one question.

How is it coming along for you? I have written parts of it over and over again and I can't decide on how to organize it... Sigh. Why don't they have questions like all other schools!

The way I organized it was by talking about my degree and my GPA in my final two years, then I talked about why social work interests me and my academic and career goals, then I mentioned all my paid and volunteer work I've done and went into my thesis and research assistant work tying that into the professor I would like to work with and then just a small concluding paragraph and that's the basic outline I've used.

    Hope that helps you! :)

  10. I think it is mostly just your own personal preference to re-take it or not, I myself have opted not to re-take it. From what I've read on the GRE website if you re-take it and do worse they will send your better scores not the scores of your most recent test (unless it has been more than 5 years since you have taken the test). I also agree with what Jay's Brain has to say, each year its a new applicant pool, although your scores last year may have been just under par last year, this year they could be well above what some other applicants have. Either way I wish you the best of luck!!
