  1. Thanks. I believe that you are going to Gatech ISYE since no funding at UCB. Is it?
  2. This very sad that we did not hear from the dept. Is it all over or is there any hope to get minimal support to be able to attend?
  3. PhD decisions are yet to be announced. Atleast the email from Patrick suggested that PhD decisions would be out after Masters'.
  4. Did any of the admitted students hear about funding from IEOR Berkeley?
  5. MS CS in GT is not that selective a program. And until and unless you do pathbreaking research here, you will find it hard to get admitted to berkeley. Although If you choose to attend MIT, it should be a betetr decision in view of your goals because Media labs at MIT is definitely a leader in the area and at MIT you definitely will get a chance to work across departments as well. So you might as wll get a change to work in conventional CS rather than the applied research in Media labs. Once you are in MIT, you can always request a change of major to CS as well, because of a shift of interest. PS: thats just my point of view, I would like to hear from others.
  6. Has anyone heard about funding from IEOR Berkeley? Did the funding decisions happen during/after the visit day interviews?
  7. Good to know that you found UCB delightful Cements my decision to attend as well
  8. Its very comforting to know that (I was already sure of accepting the offer) I just posed the ques to know probable grad-mates at UCB. From what I see here on GradCafe: only 5-6 people have been accepted in the program What is the usual intake ? I would guess 10-12( including all MS, MS/PhD, PhD)
  9. I have heard this as well that incoming students at MS and MS/PhD level seldom are funded on RAs. And the lucky ones who get TAs have to cover the out-of state tuition out of pocket.(Surprisingly unlike most other schools TAs at UCB (GSI as they are known in UCB jargon) dont cover complete tuition and stipend. I hope some combination of fellowship and RA/TA is offered to us guys. BTW how many of you are still planning to attend UCB IEOR. I mean is this the top choice school for most or is it second fiddle to MIT ORC, GaTech ISYE, and Cornell/Columbia?
  10. I am joining UC Berk for IEOR. I would like to know about some options on living in Berkeley.
  11. Has anyone heard officially from Berkeley IEOR on funding. Received official admit letter form grad school last week, but no mention of funding either my department or by grad school. Should I be worried?
  12. Did anyone hear from Berkeley IEOR dept? When are they supposed to inform us? Further I was just wondering, how many admits/waitlists are done every season? (since it is a very small dept at Berk.)
  13. Try for the MSTP programs those give you a freedom to worj on collaborative research

Thanks a lot leigh. Thats what I have come to know of homepark from others as well. But wont all the good apartments be taken by the time I reach there(july end or aug 1st week) are other places better to live and book in advance. could u also elaborate on the leasing process. Being from a diff part of the world i am a bit confused over this. What all is needed to rent an apartment and how is payment made(monthly or tri-monthly or annually), how long is the leanse. when does it start (from the day of agreement or from start of month always?) thanks a lot for responding

Thanks a lot Yang. One more query..should I book an apartment in Homepark right away, or should I do it when I come there in August.(Although I seriously doubt that anything good would be left by that time.) Further what would be the procedure to do this.

Now that I have zeroed in to GT as desination, I am looking to book housing early. Is it advisable to book housing in advance or should I wait till I reach there see the houses myself before paying up?? Further what would be good (or rather optimum) options to live in terms of safety, cost, fun, distance from campus, and availability of public transport, and/or vicinity to stores. PS I am international (Indian) and would not want to afford a car. I am coming to join MS in Industrial Engg. the following have been suggested: 1. Home Park 2. Peachtree St / Ponce De Leon 3. Centennial Apartments 4. Atlantic Station which would be the best place, If there are other options that potential graduate students consider, please bring up in discussion. Looking for help and potential roommates
  17. I have an MS in IE admit at Georgia Tech. I have heard that I can change major/degree titles within the dept. without re-admission at the time of registering. is it true? the following link has all the masters degress offered at GT. http://www.isye.gatech.edu/academics/graduate/masters/ Further, since MS IE is focussed in manufacturing and production, what might be the probablejob options..would i be able to land in a job in finance or hedge funds or say insurance. Whatt would be the kind of job responsibilities. Final destination is locked as GT.
  18. Hi, I have an MS in Industrial Engg. offer. Apparently, I wanted thesis option, but have got this. And an offer from Virginia Tech has made the choice difficult. Hope to get a shift to PhD soon enough... In any case GT IE would be a great destination by all aspects.. BTW I am an international student from India. Looking forward to meet potential poomies.
  19. Hi, I have been offered a spot in MS Industrial Engineering Class. I am an international student from India. I also have an Admit from Georgia, but due to the non thesis nature of the MS degree there, there are good chances that VT would be my destination unless ofcourse GaTech offers me PhD(, which is highly unlikely..) Would like to meet potential roomies?
  20. gentle bounce.. people I would really appreciate some help here..
  21. @floyd: Thanks a lot Are these loans available to International students without collateral in US. Further, I am also leaning towards GT as final destination due to combination of factors like faculty, reputation, location et al. Thanks. @others: more opinions are also invited.
  22. Hi All, I have recently been accepted into the Masters' program in IE dept at Gatech(GT) and Vatech(VT). And now i have to decide which school to choose.please help.. my profile is listed in my account info. I dind not apply to really cool schools like Stanford, MIT and Cornell because the costs there would have been extremely high. 1. Both the schools have almost similar costs for the two yr program..on paper cost of attendance at GT(Atlanta) is ~65K and at VT (Blacksburg) is ~62K. 2. The respective locations are Atlanta(large town) and Blackburg(relatively smaller university town). Will this have a bearing on the kind of jobs offered? Where do I have better options for getting a good job? 3. My research interests are more into production systems and manufacturing rather than OR and stats(GT specialization). VT seems to have more faculty working in production systems and robotics. While GT IE program is more specific for OR and Logistics, VT offers a good bouquet. 4. The IE dept of GT is extremely LARGE while VT is modest in these terms. So if I do have a change of interest that I might have more options at GT than at VT. But this also means that GT is adamant not to fund masters' students in IE program by giving them RA's and TA's. while VT might have better options. 5. Further I am highly interested in PhD. I did not apply to PhD in these programs becuase I was misled into believing that getting into PhD is very tough for international students and then you might not even get the masters' spot. Hence I applied to the masters' program. Now first going ahead with masters' program, I will have to take some loans from my home country. And then I will not be able to go on to PhD straight after masters' since I need to repay..... Is it possible to ask the graduate program cordinator at both the places to consider my application for PhD programs at this point of time. Will it be worth it?? Plus would I even get a consideration. I have also applied to PURDUE, Penn State and Texas A&M in masters' I am hopeful of admits there as well. Since the decision in any of these places isnt made, should I inform these departments to consider me for PhD or dont consider me at all (Since IMO , speaking in terms of ranking, costs and return on investment-- GT=VT>PSU>PURDUE>TAMU) 6. I am an international student from India. and both the places have good numbers of familiar people. further i am open to meeting new people. I guess socializing scene is almost equivalent at both places. Please help me decide. Thanks for your time.

  24. Hi All, I am new to grad cafe and this is my first post. I am aware that this thread has more PhD candidates than masters' aspirants. I would still seek some advice on choice of my graduate school. I have my stats listed in "about me" section of my profile.I applied to masters' only because I didnt think I would get in a PhD program in the top schools and hence it would be a better option to go to a good school for MS and then reapply for PhD that going to an obscure school for PhD. Please advise me on which programs(out of the ones applied) are better for IE in terms of: 1. Job prospects-usually what are the kinds of jobs that are offered to students with masters'? 2. Research quality--since my primary aim is to go on for a PhD? and usually it is easier to get on with a PhD in the same school than going to a new grad school. My areas of interest are robotics and industrial/biomedical applications, healthcare, ergonomics and manufacturing systems. I am awaiting decision from Purdue, TAMU, PSU and Gatech. But due to financial constraints it might be difficult for me to join Gatech (~$60K). Plus as earlier stated, the MS program at Gatech is 'CASH COW'. and they have explicitly stated no aid for masters' students. Additionally as far as I know, Vatech(~$30K) is better than TAMU (~$25K). and as for PSU (~$40) and Purdue (~$38K) I will have to wait for decisions. (The approx. amounts are for international applicants for a period of one year) At other places, I believe there are chances of landing in TA/RA positions which will help defray costs. Please advise me, especially on Vatech v/s PSU v/s Purdue.
