Hello, as residents in Seattle do you have any particular recommendations for a safe and quiet studio/1 bedroom apartment within a bus ride because I'm a bit worried about the late night parties I experienced in my undergrad and also safety issues. Or I shall ask is there any notable differences in regard of these two issues between apartments in the same district?
  2. Thank you all for the replies. I read carefully through all of them and they helped a lot. I'm going to both schools for a visit and hopefully will come to my final decision between the two.
  3. I realize that the title of the post is a bit misleading. I'm not trying to make the decision only based on the living cost but its nonetheless an important factor. Decision on an unknown 5 years of academic life (and a much longer timespan as the outcome of the decision) is not easy so I want to consider as throughly as possible.
  4. Thank you all for the replies! Wife working is not an option for my case as her visa wouldn't allow her to do so. (She can do some online business though but this is not a reliable factor to be counted in) I found some affordable studios at about $1000, at a distance of 10+ mi, but not sure of the traffic condition in Seattle (as bad as Chicago?). Would be interesting to know what life is like that way. I'm in pure math, have not determined on the specific research direction though.
  5. Greetings! I've just been admitted to the math PhD program in U Washington and after I did some research on the living cost there, I am literally shocked. While I'm still trying to work out a compromise (since I'm going to live with my wife, there's not much to compromise), I want to know if it's worth the 5 years struggle. As the title said, the alternative is U Wisconsin, with a similar math department in regard of reputation and ranking. However, my concern about that is the fairly big geographical disadvantage compared to Seattle. So here I would like to know your prospective on this, considering the following 3 cases, how the impact of graduate from a school that's in middle of nowhere? 1. Looking for a work in the industry with MS degree. 2. with PhD degree. 3. Looking for an academic work in another college (this one I suppose is not affected too much) I'm aware that situation differs from person to person, but do you have any personal experiences or opinions you want to share about this? Since I'm a foreigner and don't have much experience about all these work related issues in US, your oppinions could benifit a lot in helping my decision and I'll appreciate that! Thanks a lot!
  6. Anyone applying for the math/stats program? I had 2 personal & academic mixed interviews from professors of the department and a official academic interview this week and now one of the professor who interviewed me wants to recommend me to his program and asks for another interview. I have no idea what this means because the admission process of this school seems so atypical to me so far.
  7. Hello, I'm a senior in a 50-ish math department with my math GPA being 3.9 (one 1.5 in an elective and all others 4.0, including two graduate algebra and one graduate analysis. I'm taking graduate topology and probability currently). No REU experience. I'll take my math GRE this month, so anything there is unknown. I'm looking for a PhD program that offers financial support for the first two years. I don't have a very specific interest yet but it would probably end up in either analysis or probability. So here are the questions: 1. How lacking of research experience will impact me both considering application and financial support? 2. I will also apply some statistics programs but I'm struggling on how to write my SOP for it. Since the majority of my courses are pure math courses and my interest is also focused there. Is there anyway to persuade them that I'll still be suitable for their program that is not theoretical oriented? 3. Which level of programs should I be looking to based on my background? Since I cannot determine my research field now, I'd be likely to go for those schools with larger departments. Thank you!
