  1. Masters in Experimental degree or find a research gig. I'm looking to go into research so I might not be totally sold on getting a PHD anyhow
  2. Just got the email that I'm presenting my senior thesis on mosh pits at EPA, really excited. Anyone know of any good conferences coming to the mid-Atlantic/D.C. region?
  3. I apologize in advance if this post sounds like its coming from a rebellious teenager (though it kind of is). I got an email today inviting me to apply to an honor society for seniors in their undergraduate school (seniors as in fourth years). I want to pose this question here before I give my opinion; what do you all think of Honor Societies? Is it something that will help one get into grad school, or get a job? Are they just things that look good on resumes? All the invitation really said to me is that its a prestigious society and that it will recognize my achievement, but what good is that? The website of the society just talked about networking, more recognition and connection, which all sound like a bunch of keywords with little weight behind them. It really just feels like something that looks good on applications, but maybe I'm just cynical.
  4. Theres also the option of going for a Masters in Social Work, which enables you to do counseling and is more versatile than a Masters in Counseling. However, if you want to work with trauma therapy experts, you might want to consider getting a Ph D in counseling, as thatll qualify you more so than just a Masters. If you just want to provide counseling to trauma patients, then a Masters of Counseling under a teacher that studies trauma would be sufficient or a program that offers classes in trauma related disorders.
  5. Hello all, first time poster. I'm a junior in my undergrad studying psychology and am starting to look at graduate schools. Long story short, I thought I wanted to go into psychotherapy/counseling when I started, realized I wouldn't like that, but I still like the clinical side of psychology. Specifically I like studying drugs, drug addicts, personality of drug users, treating people with drugs (especially the new wave of hallucinogenic research), all that good stuff. So I realize I could go for a Ph. D in clinical psych, under a program that researches psychopharmacology and addictions, finish that and become a teacher or a researcher. But I wanted to explore other options. There is a Masters of Experimental psychology program at a college nearby and some of the teachers do research in things that I'm interested in. As that would be a shorter period of time for completion, I have started giving this some thought. But what is the job market like for someone with this degree? I realize most use this degree as a stepping stone for Ph D programs, but I want to know if I could get a decent job with just a masters in experimental. Would there be many doors open for teaching? What would the pay be like after 5 or 10 years? Has anyone been down this path? I did email the director of the local program and he said most of the graduates who don't go further with their education become research analysts and research coordinators for the local government agencies, universities and military bases. Doesn't sound terrible to me, but I wanted to ask further.
