  1. I have heard about the fellowship program. Although I was under the impression that it was super competitive. If they rejected me for graduate school they'll probably reject me for a full time job. Anyways, worth a shot. Thank you!
  2. Yeah, I've been applying heavily to research jobs and most of them require previous years of work experience. I've been rejected based on that quite a lot because they don't consider writing papers at home in my underwear to be work experience.
  3. My GI Bill runs out this semester so unless I have a tuition waiver+stipend, I can't be anywhere near a university. I already have 3 peer reviewed publications so I don't think that front needs any more development. At this point in time, I'm fine with any job that puts food on the table that doesn't involve physical labor. It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I need a wheelchair to move from point A to point B.
  4. For those of us who went 0-(insert integer here) this admissions season or don't want to spend the next 5 years of their life at a school ranked with three digits.
  5. Last rejection from Yale and Rice simultaneously. I'll be continuing to hold up the "Homeless Veteran" sign at intersections across America.
  6. Nothing on my end. Congratulations are definitely in order for you though.
  7. Still waiting on Yale. All acceptance letters have been sent out so for us, best case scenario is wait list and worst case is rejection.
  8. Well, Ron was pretty miserable being poor. Furthermore, we see Hogwarts from the eyes of Harry, who has mounds and mounds of gold locked up in Gringotts. But then again, that's just my inner sociologist coming out.
  9. 0/10 with 2 wait lists. Joke's on you Uncle Sam, even with a 4 year taxpayer funded college degree, I still contribute to homeless veterans statistics.
  10. Rejected from Boston College PhD but given admission to an unfunded Masters. Punch in the teeth considering I told them I had no money for even a single year of education.
  11. I've always considered the monetary aspect of academia. A bachelors in sociology will land you a job approximately 35k but after 5 years, you will be making the exact same as a 1st year TT professor. On top of that, after 5 years at the same job, assuming you're an excellent worker, you will be respected as someone who knows what they're doing. A 1st year TT professor on the other hand, gets hazed like a fraternity pledge (okay maybe not that bad).
  12. Wait listed from Purdue and Texas A&M. Not even a single acceptance. No news from Yale, Boston College, or Rice which means it's either wait list or outright rejection.
  13. All Purdue acceptances are out. Unfortunately for me, I did not make the list.
  14. So I've been looking into public health as a sociology graduate and quite frankly, I'm a bit confused. The MPH seems to have many different directions that both seem to conflict and align with my background. Looking on individual school websites, I found some MPH directions requiring courses like virology. I have close to no course work in the physical sciences and would most likely not do well if I took any at the graduate level. I do however have a handful of courses in health and social behavior which were very interesting. So my ultimate question is this: for most schools, do they take into consideration the program within the MPH you choose during the admissions process or do they just lump everyone together and let admitted students choose afterwards?
  15. Thanks! I'll wait another 2 days to start asking since most of the staff at the universities I am applying to are tired of seeing my name in their email inboxes.
  16. For the writing sample on every application, there are pretty strict page requirements, especially with OSU (10-12). However my paper contains 2 pages of works cited and a cover page, in the past, has these extra pages counted towards the writing sample page requirements?
  17. Thanks for the encouragement! I'll balance out the range of programs then.
  18. Hi guys, new to the forum so I guess this could be a place to ask this. Should the bulk of my applications be directed towards the middle ranked schools or should I go with safety and apply mostly to lower ranked programs? At this point in time, all I know is I want a PhD and not a terminal masters, everything else for me is open. Stats: Major: BA in Sociology with emphasis in crime and deviance. Cumulative GPA: 3.09 (Had a really unsuccessful first year of undergrad as a mechanical engineer) Major GPA: 3.85 GRE: 160V, 164Q, 6.0W Research experience: Nothing glamorous other than an Honor's thesis. Pros: Recommendations are from 2 powerhouses in the sociology field and 1 in American studies. Veteran status? On the applications of many schools I am applying to say the check box is used for record keeping purposes and has no influence on admission decisions. Cons: That cumulative GPA. Overall, when looking at my package all I can say is that I am a very average candidate or if my failed engineering background has any weight, a below average candidate. However, grad school applicants are usually superstars during their undergrad careers. Also, I'm mainly applying to programs with quantitative crime and deviance faculty.
