  1. i am seeking this second Brown admit too. If it is ever possible, please PM me. Oh @gingin6789 , you will be fine! I see no reason why Brandeis not extending offers for applicants like you.
  2. I have already received Brown's official acceptance letter, just a few hours before. My POI has contacted me and told me "not literally", but prepare to pack my bag and move to Providence lol... I am sure Brown is sending multiple acceptance letters today. Hope everyone good luck! The visit date is the pi day. (3.14)
  3. Unfortunately It's not me. I have claimed on results board very earlier last week. So I am really not making you guys panic, but honestly it's not me.
  4. Not interested in race/ethnicity at all. So I am just applying to Soc program. I will report! Good for you! Try some scallion crabs in Chinatown.
  5. It is not called Interviews I should be clarified. I was reached by my POI "discussing my research interests". I see this as a super positive sign, but no it is not a formal department interview.
  6. Congrats! @spicytunaroll. Now it is the time to compete with California roll. I am claiming a Yale interview too. [Edit: thanks to @HopefulSocPhD, this should not be understood as interview. I was reached by my POI "discussing my research interests". I see this as a super positive sign, but no it is not a formal department interview.] PhD application is really like mystery. At the beginning I was rejected by three schools in a row: UT Austin Wisc UNC (actually not rejected by UNC, I just received no info), I was devastated and thought "hell no, I will be roundly rejected". Now it comes to my six offers streak (and from even more competitive programs). Who knows what the heck happened. Never lose hope, gals and guys.
  7. Note I see a Princeton acceptance reported on results page today named demography and social policy PhD. I assume it is not sociology.
  8. I have only went RI a few times before so I will rely on you for a tour Bonus: Claim a Maryland acceptance despite I sent an email to withdraw my apps because I will definitely not considering. I turned down that offer right away though so hopefully it helps those on the waitlist.
  9. Hah, I said this only because I realized Penn's PRC (Population research center ?? again I am terrible of memorizing names) also trained its own students post to the fact that I have already submitted my application. I am applying to Penn really just because they got good demographers there. Their criminology looks good, but it is also a separate department. They have family faculty, but not seems doing marriage work that made me feel too exciting.
  10. Iggy's doughboys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awwwww I lovvvvvvvvvvvvvve it! Definitely! Actually, that's the place to roll in when the "GradCafe New England" cohort meets together! If there is anything I have to mention about Narragansett (sorry for my bad spelling), nothing can really beat the lobster roll and fried clams there!! @Shay825 Looks like all your schools are no more than 100 miles of radius range to Boston except Vandy and Philly (with slightly more than 100 mi).
  11. Relax and just bring the tacos to Providence. I have never been to Texas. =w= Sorry to hear about your grandma, ***hugs** Cucumber shrimp sushi, which is called "Boston Roll??" is my favorite. Now my favorite dish has already revealed I will stay in New England forever. Hmmm... The background picture (not my avatar) cat is even more unfriendly. Looks like hunting down foods. I have not heard anything from Prince, so ... pray for me.
  12. Yes. I have to say @spicytunaroll your name is making me hungry.
  13. Penn almost exclusively means University of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania State University is most commonly abbreviated as PSU, Penn State, or just the State (if you live in Pennsylvania).
  14. I was told by my friend who are not using GradCafe, today. He told me Penn is sending out a few interviews. Maybe it is just one or two faculty members. I have not heard from any faculty either. Don't be nervous. Interestingly, now I realized I should have applied to Penn Demography instead of Penn Sociology, though.
  15. Don't really want to disrupt the peace here, but Penn is sending out some interviews. ***Update: Based on the statistics, this week we have less decisions coming out compared to last two weeks and the next two weeks. Maybe I am biased based on the programs I am applying to. ***
  16. There is a red little crystal dot beside many of the postings. You can see their GPA/GRE by moving your mouse there.
  17. Well... It really depends on the field and the way you looked at it. To name a few, UNC, Penn State, UW, UT, Duke, Penn (with a few exceptions), Ohio State, Cornell, UM (with a few exceptions), Wisconsin (with a few exceptions). are very quantitative-leaning programs. There are actually very few top programs that solely do qualitative stuff. What I really mean by qualitative programs are those programs with a better balance of quantitative and qualitative works. Some of the examples are Harvard, Yale, Northwestern , Brown, Berkeley and maybe UChi. This is just a rough division, and it can be inaccurate, but hopefully it gives you a feel about how it looked like. As a general rule, top-ranked public university soc programs are much more likely to be quantitative-focused. However, keep in mind that these trends may well likely to change in the next following years. For example, I can feel Penn State is hiring faculties with more qualitative works. Yale, on the opposite, is hiring social stratification faculties, who must have done some quantitative works. I feel like programs do not actually like the label that they are too quantitative/qualitative. Either way. Remember also, MMR (mixed-methods research) has become popular in sociology (though it's much later than I expected).
  18. Yep. I post Brown with my UW, as everyone knows me in this thread may guess it's me posting, but I really got my GRE/GPA wrong in the Brown posting
  19. At this point, I am really anxious about the decision from Penn and Yale. I have already withdrawn three schools I will definitely not commit anyway, with the offers from UCLA, UW and Brown coming (see my signature). Both Penn and Yale will not notify until the very middle of Feb, so I think I will be really shut up for a while. While most people are looking for Princeton, I don't know why - but I am really not that excited. Perhaps I really don't care. It is probably the most difficult program to get into, but it is not on top of my list anyway. Unfortunately admission difficulty really does not match my interests level. For those programs remain on my accepted list (I will keep it <5 to save my money), I will visit each of them, and make my final decision. I will then looking for GradCafe cohort because it seems we dominate many of the programs hahaha
  20. @redhillgirl Hi, Which school is on the top of your list? Mind sharing research interests? Or just PM me is fine:) Your list really looks like a combination of very quantitative ones and very qualitative ones.
  21. Ok fine. I am getting quite serious here. 155 V is 70% percentile and 149 Q is around median. That is fine. Run a propensity score matching and see how likely 70/50 will end up similar with 30/18. These are statistically significant. I think here people are getting sort of a "politically correct" way to bash GRE system and those who believe GRE somewhat prove (at least) some promise of a candidate. I will say while test score is just one very small part of application and may well likely to be biased. Test taking skills are important and do matter. While publication and job talks have nothing to do with GRE, it still followed this same logic. Will you succeed in an exam, albeit awkward, that played an important role in your admissions? No one here saying those who get 170/170 are necessarily stronger as a candidate to any grad program. As I think @redhillgirl must be stronger in other aspects than I do to get into Wisconsin( where I got rejected). However, I definitely question a 35/18 GRE. With very few exceptions, a person with experience reading social science article should naturally score 50+ on verbal without preparing for the exam. A person taking basic multivariate regression should naturally score 50+ on Q without preparing. Isn't that right?! i am not saying test scores are equivalent to talent and sociological promise. I do insist that a person with that kind of GRE will typically become unsuccessful in graduate school and therefore extremely unlikely to be offered admission. Especially, when the offer is coming from a quantitative program (UW), and to a candidate with abysmal Math score. If someone here is that UW accepted guy/gal with that score, admitted, without other special situations. PM me. I apologize to you publicly on this forum. Thank you.
  22. Yeah, below 50%. For BOTH sections? plus 18% for a quantitative program? I bet you have taken GRE before and knew that math section does not actually require any college-level math. 143 may be barely acceptable in some qualitative programs like NU, but no, I bet it is never possible for UW. (does not matter Wisconsin or Washington). Law schools also said LSAT+GPA are not the only factors, but that's just being polite. You may try to have a low LSAT and mediocre GPA and apply to YLS see if it is ever possible.
  23. Maybe, but it is not a "below 160". It is 18/35. We really need not to say GRE is that not important, although I will have no evidence to disagree with the saying that "GRE is not that important". GRE has disability accommodations. In that case, GRE will either provide supplements or extra time. Disability is not really a factor with that scores of GRE still being possible for UW.
