My top interest is marriage/family (now you see why I am sad). Other interests listed on my CV is criminology, network and spatial/social demography. Applied (12): UNC-CH, UT-Austin, OSU, Princeton, Yale, Brown, NYU, UW-Seattle, Wisconsin, Maryland-College Park, Penn, UCLA.

****hugs**** I know how it feel. Based on the research interests shown on your signature, I believe you will get into some really nice programs with stellar fellowship. I would pass down the words from redhillgirl. Those programs reject you just do not deserve your passion.

I was just so sad because I placed Wisc on top of my list really just because it is a perfect match. I think once I get my offers on hand, I will not reapply to Wisc. Ok, no more tears now. @redhillgirl This is just making me cry... I don't have a school of better fits. That single dream program has gone, forever. I don't like to be seemed broken over the Internet. However, I am really, really sad now.

Application decisions are not made solely out of GRE scores. I suspected if I was filtered out in the first cut for the low undergrad GPA. My GRE has no problem, except a 4.5 AWA (which is not low at all). Well I have to say my apps have flaws like these, but honestly, are Wisc admits all perfect? I don't understand...

*****hugs***** I am rejected too, and Wisc is my dream program. To me, I think UW Madison is #1 in terms of fit. I really really cannot accept what was happened, and I decided to call them after my class is over.

I think I will be rejected by UNC-Chapel Hill They have not sent me any notifications, and I suspected the offers have gone.

Ohio State buddy! You have been admitted to OSU, UT (!!) and Minnesota. This is really an impressive record at this point of the application. This result should really make feel less intense compared to most of the other folks on this board ~

The official reason is "not as good as other applicants in terms of intellectual fit". Cheers. I looked at some of your other posts and thought you should get into some good programs! We will be fine.

I completely agree with what you said. @hazenyc I would rather think my apps is underqualified, not overqualified. For a simple reason, that kind of "overqualified" judgment call made me feel even worse.

I am sorry, @liesandfish I did not get what you asked. Did you mean "any chance to ask the grad assistant who on the grad committee screwed me up"? No I do not know.

I have math background so 170Q is not surprising, I got really lucky to have this verbal score. I think what turned my application is neither GRE nor GPA, but something else I don't know. I would hate to realize they turned down my apps for the reason I may go somewhere else. I may or I may not, but they did reject a very enthusiastic applicant.

Claim UT-A rejection. I am not so active in the forum so perhaps no one cares. However, I still cannot express how sad I am about the results. The fact when I heard my application got into the final cut but still lost before the finishing line is extremely depressing. I thought my application was strong and a good fit with the program. Sadly I cannot say a word in the judgment process.

Hugs to gingin. The fact that Emory rejects you is absolutely a terrible mistake AdComm made this year. You deserve a much better program.

Hey gingin! I think weekend offers are not actually made over weekends. Many of the schools I know closed their offices (i.e. UNC-CH) during weekends. Maybe that's just because some people don't report their acceptances at the same day they receive it, or some delays were set by the offices in the email delivery.

I don't know if this is at all true, but I heard that some schools send offers to international applicants a bit later than domestic applicants. They need some time to prepare for your immigration information and additional documents. Just correct me if wrong, but in line with some of the previous postings, offers do shoot in at different dates. Hopefully this will relieve some of the anxiety for the folks here. Congrats to the UW folk. I am applying there, too.

Dear iemons, Thank you very much. I researched through the Harvard website and now agreed with you that Harvard seems not a good fit for me even considered my family reasons. (By saying family reasons, I mean my parents expected me to apply and I cannot persuade them). A good side about this "lack of fit" is that my chances of getting in is very low, so I won't worry too much if I will have that tough decision to choose making my mom and dad happy (as their only child attend a prestigious ivy school) or receive a good graduate training for the next five (or more) years. I completely agree with you that it sounds like a waste of money to apply, but it is just so hard in my culture to completely reject my parent's expectations... I guess I will apply anyway and look for other schools to matriculate.

Hi gingin, Now it's my turn to comment on your post . I agree with some of the previous posts that you should put a few higher-ranked programs on your list. On top of all, your GRE is not bad. A 152 is definitely not excellent for quantitative scholars, but is okay if you do not want to research on quantitative methodology or demography... Think about Duke, Texas-Austin and have a try. I don't think your application package automatically disqualify you for any program...

Thanks gingin! I understand your confusion. I have quadruple minors, and quintuple majors (that's why I accumulated a 320+ credits in four years of college). I do take graduate courses, one or two each semester, depending on the availability of seats in my interested courses. The graduate school will not over-enroll undergrads when course is full. I was a TA last summer and will be again a TA for a 400-level sociology course next spring. My undergrad institution allowed undergraduate students to be T.A.. Thanks for giving me heads-up on the language matters of the original post, I wrote them before my dinner, so i failed to do proofreading haha

Thanks for the initial comments. What I really mean was JMF. Personally I will categorize ASR, Criminology or AJS as "beyond Tier-1". I don't know if people will say JMF is a 2nd tier, but it is among the top journals for family studies I think... I agree with you Harvard is not particularly strong on demography. I think Chapel Hill is a much better fit. I picked Harvard to be on the top of the list because family reasons (and I am a little tired of small town life). It looks like Stanford is very strong in social stratification, social psych and critical sociology, but none of my fields. Correct me if I am wrong My concern about UCLA is they do not guarantee funding for international student

Greetings, I consider my circumstances very different from others School: Top 50 Public University Area: Social and Spatial Demography, Marriage and Family, Life Course, Crime Law Deviance. GPA: (Junior Senior GPA): 3.6-3.7 range [but much lower cumulative GPA: 3.3-3.5 range] (SOC Major GPA): 3.9-4.0 range (Sociology Graduate Courses): 4.0 Major: Soc, Criminology, Poli Sci, Philosophy, Media, minor math+stat+psych+GIS (320+ semester credits, explaining low cumulative GPA, that almost tripled the average) GRE: Verbal 167 Quan 170 AW 4.5 (seeking to retake for a higher AW) Demographic: Need Funding, Ph.D. (absolutely no terminal M.A.), International applicant but attending colleges in U.S., so no TOEFL (not sure if it is positive) Recommendation: 3 full professors in Sociology Publications: 1 to a tier-1 journal in R&R process 4 submitted (including one to JIV, another to spatial demography) Conference: 5 (ASA, ASC, AAG, an Asian sociological conference, PAA.) All of the above are single-authored, with an exception of co-authored with a professor. RA: 3 semesters, covering social network project and a criminology project. 2 semesters of intern for survey research center as data analyst. TA: 1 TA for 400 level course (but it is for next semester) - 1 "TA" for lower level course (but perform independent lecturing, exam designing and many more as a lecturer). Skills: Certificate in SAS, very proficient in STATA and SPSS. Good in R. Proficient in lots of GIS and spatial analysis software, Python, UCINET and NodeXL. Weakness: GPA (hopefully can be offset by others) I'm not sure if I appeared to be too broad in my area... Strength: GRE, Publications and research(?)
