Thanks for all of the suggestions. I, too, will be visiting—but not until early April. I wonder if the housing crunch will be on by then.

Does anyone have any suggestions for housing in Iowa City? I am looking for a quiet part of town, since I will be reading all the time! I know that it is a college town and that there will be parties everywhere, but are there any streets/neighborhoods in particular that I should stay away from? Also, how much would you say is a good price for a one bedroom apartment? I am moving from a big city, so the rent prices are much lower than what I'm accustomed. I don't want to pay too much!
I just found out that I was accepted at Iowa, and would echo the above questions. Where are good, reasonable priced places to live? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Accepting off of the wait list already???
The acceptance was me. I got a follow-up email from Dr. Stewart saying that I was at the top of the waiting list, and that someone had just declined a spot. Totally shocked and honored!!
Best wishes to all those still waiting.

Thanks for that info Musili. I hope it's not true about acceptances having gone out already, but it seems like we'd have seen at least one posted on the results page. I mean, UMN is a pretty popular program. I suppose it's possible though if they are taking very few applicants this year. Sigh. I'll be waiting for my rejection...
Yeah, the longer this goes, the likelier it seems that they have already sent out acceptances. I would have expected acceptances to have gone out before waitlists, or at least at the same time. It may be that no one posting on Grad Cafe was admitted—as unlikely as that is.

Mine still says the same thing. I don't think there's another web site to check, I'm pretty sure "Apply Yourself" is the only one that UMN uses.
Thanks for checking. Maybe they are updating in batches, or maybe the post was a mistake. I'd accept my fate if only a couple of acceptances were posted.

Someone posted that they were rejected by website. But, the only MN status checker that I know of is the "Apply Yourself." And, when I login there, it just says: "application complete." Anyone want to volunteer to look at their application?

Well, I just got wait-listed this morning so let's assume that notifications are going to start spilling out today. Cheers to the admits!
Congrats on the waitlist. Still, it seems strange to see no acceptances, doesn't it?

So, is it just me, or has Minnesota been too quiet? Their prospective students weekend is March 25-26, so I can't imagine they'd go past this week for notifications.
Anyone have news?

Gah! I'm freaking out. This is my top choice--and if I'm rejected, I'm officially out of the game! *cringes*
Well, to be fair, it doesn't say *how* the offers were communicated, so they could have been mailed, and not quite (yet) reached the recipients.

You got a waitlist email? This school seems really odd about notifying, has anyone received an acceptance email? I've heard absolutely nothing, so I guess that is another reject to add to the list. Le sigh, did your status checker change at all?
My status on ISIS did not change. The email didn't say anything about size of entering class or size of waitlist. But, it did seem to indicate that all first round acceptances had gone out: "right now our earliest round of offers has gone out to a small group of other students."
It was late when they sent the email. Maybe they still have some waitlists to send out?

So...I got one of the mysterious waitlist emails. Anyone accepted thinking of going somewhere other than Iowa? Right now I'm sitting on two waitlists, and that's it.

Did anyone else apply for USC's PhD in Creative Writing and Literature? It's the only school I haven't heard a word about yet and I'm really curious when they will start admitting/rejecting/etc.
Sorry to say that I'm fairly sure they've already accepted and waitlisted people (just not rejected). I'm basing this on:
A user there, bordercrosser, is reporting a waitlist in poetry to USC's PhD in Creative Writing and Lit.
I also applied to USC, and haven't heard anything, so I'm in the same boat as you, I'm just afraid it's starting to sink...

I sort of think there still aren't enough IU acceptances posted. Look at last year, for example—17 acceptances posted. This year, only 3. I bet we'll see a few more in the next day or two.

Completely not worth it! I had to answer like 10 secret questions and enter a four word pass phrase.
(But yes, thanks for sharing the link. It gave me a distraction.)

Hello TC3,
There is a larger number of creative PhD applicants over in the PW forums, see, particularly, this thread:
It covers several years of applications, but the last few pages are from this year.
Re: programs notification, I haven't heard anything yet, but expect to (probably by the end of this week!) I do know that Texas Tech, Florida State, and North Texas, and Wisconsin-Madison have all notified, but it doesn't look you applied to any of those schools.
Best of luck!
Abramson has been a great help in the past, but I think that he's removed his blog since it contained a lot of information that he's now using for profit as part of Abramson Leslie Consulting.
It seems that there's a *ton* of data about MFA programs, but PhDs in creative writing are still a bit of a mystery to folks, and it's a rare find when one encounters some genuine insight into this process.
I've pretty much written off Illinois at this point, especially considering that they may even take less than the 7 or 8 they took last year. And I've pretty much written off Utah as well, but there's not much information on the decision timetable to form an accurate picture of its admissions decision schedule. I heard that at Utah creative PhD applications go through a slushpile round for which the creative faculty look at only the creative writing submission, and if they don't like the writing (considered absolutely in a vacuum from the other application components), the application does not move on to the rounds for which SOPs, critical writing samples, CVs, LORs, and stats are examined. A little frustrating, since that slushpile round is essentially no different than the process by which a journal selects unsolicited manuscripts for publication, and a PhD program is so much more than that.

Just as a point of clarification, Iowa only offers full funding for PhD admits. A 50% appointment at Iowa (and elsewhere) IS full funding. It carries a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance. The 50% number is based on a 40-hour work week. So a 100% appointment would be 40 hours. As a TA or Instructor, the idea is that you don't work more than 20 hours a week, and that is where 50% comes from.
