  1. I'd also mention when you google calls for papers, also include the year --- because you'll get results that have passed their deadline. So for example: Google: "call for papers" "demography in africa" 2016 yields like 10 results. and I just made that up off the top of my head.
  2. The question I guess how much should/does the financial incentive outweigh rank/fit.. especially over 5 years. Is $50,000+ cumulative "worth" more than attending a top 5 program vs a top 20 program? (I am not sure the answer to this for myself, but I guess it varies by individual financial situation)
  3. I sent an unsolicited submission to an int'l academic conference, attended and ended up winning best paper award! Really only steps 1 and 3,4 are interesting. Step 1.: write a paper that has original research & insight, not just a lit. review Step 2.: format the paper to look like a real paper, use proper citation & footnote, labeling etc. Step 3.: google "call for papers" + <your topic(s)> Step 4.: once you find a call for papers you can usually submit your manuscript (without any author names) via an online intake system such as easychair Step 5.: You will be notified if the reviewers accept or reject your paper. if they accept you will likely need to make some revisions based on comments Step 6.: Pay your own way to the conference. I used my vacation money to go there. Sucks. Whatever. Step 7.: Network with people. Get drinks with folks in the evenings, sit at different tables for different meals and meet different people. They may assume you are an academic, but if they asked, I just said no, I am not but I am planning to apply to PhD programs next year. Step 8.: Slap it on your CV Step 9.: Rinse & Repeat
  4. anybody claiming U.Chicago?
  5. @HopefulSocPhD I was in the same boat, went back for an MA at a so-so school, did very well, made great relationships with faculty, did my own research and it paid off - this year I've had offers from top20 programs. I'll be >40 when I am awarded my PhD, so def try again next year and apply to some MA programs also in Soc or related fields (other social sciences especially). At least you have a job that is making a positive impact on others. Many of us will struggle to find the jobs we want even from top20 programs!
  6. Go drive an uber
  7. Very nice acceptance call from Cornell. could be a great fit ...!
  8. Curious about correlation and causality -- so far .. 4 rejections And 1 acceptance to a great program. I reached out and emailed prior to submitting apps POIs at the one I got in, and none where I didn't. I know its earlyish in the acceptance cycle, but similar experience? Not so much?
  9. Berkeley ding :/ great fit but doubt I'd relocate to Cali anyhow
  10. He is also still listed (currently) on Princeton faculty page.. In general though, is this sort of faux pas an automatic ding, or are us young, naive applicants given a pass? (assuming there are at least 1 or 2 other relevant faculty members on or recently hired)
  11. Mine says ''submitted' .. It also says on applyweb: ' The Princeton University - Application for Admission to Graduate School is currently closed and will reopen in the Fall of 2014. ' WTG Pton for forgetting the past 2 years Yes, still 2 other faculty that are fit, but this POI I wrote a whole paragraph about fit with.. at least they have gone to another place I've applied so will be a nice surprise if I get in there!
  12. I just found out one of my POIs I referenced in my SOP to Princeton has been poached elsewhere. Whoops. :\

    Fundings

I stumbled across this... not too much info for sociology programs compared to others: http://www.phdstipends.com/results Can anybody fill in some blanks? For example Cornell/Chicago/NW/Wisc-Madison etc.if you have knowledge?
  14. I'm pretty sure I'll attend visit day too. Coordinate over pm as it gets closer?
  15. Just got my Wisc acceptance email ! Great fit with econ. soc. very happy! Email was from Alice Justice, signed by Bob Freeland ! No word on funding/fellowships.. Just an invite to visit day in March.
  16. i don't think Wisc. *meant* to notify vie website.. people just checked on their own and found a status update.. Mine also still says pending, so my fingers are crossed tightly- but until people receive official emails or phone calls either way, it's still unknown,..
  17. Did you get an email telling you to check the website?
  18. The argument that an applicant will turn down an acceptance to fill a "better" acceptance is a really bad way of decisionmaking. Even if the applicant lists other, better schools as also being applied to, the adcom has no way of knowing if they will receive an acceptance elsewhere, and if so with what package. A better approach would be to accept them and offer a stellar funding package to lure them away from any potential competition.. But still, that line of thinking by an adcom can have negative consequences on applicants who fail to get in anywhere else, when they were able to admit you save that caveat of "oh, they'll probably just go elsewhere"..
  19. Welp... looks like I didn't get accepted to UNC :\ not a great fit for economic sociology per se (which is my sub-genre)
  20. Why am I being a troll? Answer why sociology and what you'd like to do research toward. If you can't you're in the wrong forum, the wrong thread certainly, and wasting all of our time. As for the previous poster, conversation is in lieu of any actual results having been released yet.
  21. The MSc in sarcasm and rhetoric at Stony Brook, I hear, is top notch & a great foot on the door to engineer industry.
  22. I think you should apply to the sociology program at Stanford. Its like industrial engineering at Clemson or UT for people who know how to read and follow instructions. Also, you should retake the GRE. Good luck with that.
  23. none of the schools you are applying to are the ones I am - I'll pm you my list -
  24. @gingin6789 Ahh we actually have no overlap - I am applying to economic sociology & organizations programs .. I have the awful feeling now that I will be rejected from all 14 programs I applied to
  25. Would you mind sharing the expected calendar/results schedule you figured out?
