  1. Mine still says under review, even though I got the call last week. But to be honest, so far they're the worst! During the notification call, I asked about a skype call with my POI, and was told that "he is not a skype person, I don't think that will work out" - seriously, I won't be able to talk to the guy?! So I asked about talking to two other faculty, and they said they'll contact them and get back to me. That was a week ago. I still have no details about funding, visitation weekend, or anything, basically. Really does not live up to what other unis provide. I'm having a bad gut feeling about this already. (Besides the fact that it's not the greatest of fits for me anyways.)
  2. Shouldn't U Washington be out already? At least based on previous years...
  3. Comparative politics: ethnic politics and conflict with a regional focus on India
  4. I'm in a similar position, with a strong preference for a high-rankinh school but good options with other schools as well. I plan on visiting them all simply because the crowd in my field of interest isn't that large, and it can't hurt to network with the people that I'll keep meeting at conferences and events for the next couple of years. As all the schools pay for travel expenses and are flexible to accommodate my international travel, I feel the benefits outweigh the costs here.
  5. Wow, congrats to everyone! Looks like some good news came out late in the week after all. A bit bummed that I haven't heard from WashU yet. Hopefully next week... And now it's the weekend - no worrying about notifications for two days
  6. Yup. I realise that the admits are out. That's why it seems odd that two days later, the rejects still aren't. If it weren't for this forum, we'd all still be hoping.
  7. I still haven't gotten my Chicago rejection yet. Not that I'm particularly keen on it, but it seems odd to send out rejections so much later than admits...
  8. It's really super weird that UCSD would send out rejections before thei make offers. First time I'm hearing of a university doing that. (Not personally affected though, didn't apply. Sorry though that not everyone here made it in, it's a good school.)
  9. From the experience with other schools, emails might be spread out over the course of a couple of hours, but all sent within a day. It's only been 1.5 hours since I got mine - there's still lots of hope!
  10. And Emory! Universe, you really are making up for yesterday's crappy turnout!
  11. No idea. All I know is that my application last year really wasn't strong (1 admit out of 12, decided against it when I realised it wasn't a good fit after all), and still I was admitted to the MAPSS. But, as others have pointed out, it's a question of funding. If I had had 27k lying around and nothing else to do, I might have done it. But even with partial funding, I just couldn't afford it.
  12. That happened to me last year (yes, my second cylce already), and I was admitted to the MAPSS in March. So that will take a while.
  13. Yup, me too. Not that that wasn't already expected after last night. Trying to tell myself that it's partly because I'm a foreigner, and that I won't have that problem with other schools. But I could really use some good news. Universe, if you can hear me, you know what to do
  14. Considering how bad yesterday went I'm not sure I want two more of my personal T10 to come out today...
  15. As I said earlier, I was told that Berkeley (as the last of the UCs, more or less) still has an old policy in place that requires the department to pay tuition for international students (instead of the university just waiving it), which makes it hardly feasible for the department to take internationals. Let's try to comfort ourselves with the thought that we might have made it if we were American Then again, we'll never know. But we all have other applications in the running, and as much as this is a bummer, I'm sure something will work out!
  16. Congrats, everyone. I for one have opened the wine to drown my sorrows (at my end it's 11pm, so that's acceptable I'd say ). Didn't hear from Berkeley nor Chicago (and didn't apply to any of the other schools that released today), so this is a dark day.
  17. I know. I've also heard from UC profs that UC Berkeley is the last to change the policy that excludes foreign students from funding, after the others made the change like 2 years ago. Didn't keep me from trying nevertheless...
  18. Don't say that - I AM late 20s and claiming that I'm not too old yet In fact, in the interviews I've had so far, professors told me that my experience and maturity (which are partially a function of my age) are two of the things they value the most. So - don't give up!
  19. Congrats to all those accepted to Berkeley and Chicago, btw! Having an interview with UC Irvine is really no solace on a day like this though...
  20. Oh crap. Now I wish I wouldn't check here every couple of minutes. I'm waiting for both Berkeley and Chicago and haven't heard from either, so that can only be a bad sign I fear
  21. Or an email telling me that someone quoted me on GradCafe
  22. I'm expecting 5 notifications this week, and it's Tuesday already and nothing has happened yet. I'll have to start drinking early in the day just to cope
  23. I worked my way through the US News ranking, scanning only places I could at least remotely see myself living in for the next 6 years for faculty with a match in research interests (I'm a non-US citizen and out of school for years, so had to research all of that from scratch), and then found a mix of top-10 schools to reach for, solid 20 to 40 schools that would be a good fit, and a couple 40 to 60 schools as backup. I'm pretty sure though that I haven't only sent out more applications than most other people here but also included much lower-ranked school than the majority. It so happens that I'm interested in a niche, and having someone who focuses on my region at a lower-ranked school might still work better for me than trying at a higher-ranked school where there is no one in my area. Also, I really want to start this year, and considering that I'm currently working in a different field and not getting any younger, I figured I rather give it a shot at a rank-50 university than not doing it at all. I guess how high you shoot/how much you spread depends on how good your profile is (or at least how convinced you are of the high quality of your profile), your risk aversion and what goal you follow in obtaining a PhD (i.e., teaching at a teaching-heavy college vs. research at a think tank vs. faculty position at a TT university, etc)
