  1. I went to undergrad in Canada, but am doing graduate work (MFA) right now in the US. I study continental philosophy, social aesthetics, and cultural history in contemporary improvisation (I perform too). What about everyone else? What are your areas? Also, a friend of mine just heard from UCLA yesterday...I know it's not part of this topic, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyhow.
  2. Thanks! I think they called because i've been in contact with them for awhile (few months). Also, I had gone down to 'visit' aka interview with them. The prof that ended up calling me (I think he did it on the sly- does that even make sense?) seemed to just not want me to be waiting on tentherhooks. I'm guessing they've made their decisions already, as he told me that they were waiting to hear back from some people, but it does seem odd that there hasn't been any formal offer/rejection/notice at all.
  3. you will pretty much not have to pay taxes in montreal- i lived there for several years and my roommate then was an international student (US) with comprable funding. You can actually receive almost all of the taxes they take off in the tax refund, and then probably get extra in a GST return. McGill has very good tax services for international students, but I found that attending their sessions and then getting one of the people who offer to do taxes for $15 (there will be plenty come tax time) is VERY helpful... Montreal also lets you claim the property tax that your apartment manager has to pay As for living expenses, you can do very well because it's such a cheap city to live in... rent for a nice apartment (let's say 2 bdrm) can be found for around 850 (not inclusive), but that would depend on where you lived. I had a place in NDG for $700 all inclusive, 2 bdrms. Also, a metro pass is discounted for students, and they cost $35 a month, and you can get everywhere on it (includes metro and bus). Have a great time there... it was by far the best city i've lived in thus far if you factor in everything from housing, quality of education, lifestyle, cost of living etc.

    Princeton, NJ

I'm considering Princeton too and am moving there with my boyfriend who will be working in NYC. One option I was told about is to schedule a ride with the campus shuttle... They'll pick you up from the Dinky stop (if it's stopped running) and drop you off wherever you need to be (they go until 2 AM). Otherwise, a monthly pass is $400, but I think it also covers your port authority fee. On a different note, are there any recommendations for the grad housing apartments? I'm leaning towards Lawrence Apartments because it's all inclusive, but I really have no idea what any of them are like... It would be for partner housing.
  5. I got a phone call from one of the profs in late-February saying that I was waitlisted. I haven't gotten anything else though (email, letter) and a friend of mine who has also applied has still to get anything. I was told that they'd already made offers and I guess they're expecting them to be accepted because I was told that if I accept elsewhere, they 'understood.' I also got an email from Columbia (rejected- I saw the inquiry on another forum). I'd heard Columbia's funding was such that admin issues had them only offer slots to people they were SURE would say yes (they had two available this year).
