  1. Received an unfunded MA offer from Boston College. Thought for sure there'd be some sort of aid or work study... nothing. Called them and it seems that as a policy they offer nothing to their masters students. Was my top choice and now not only do I feel the sting of rejection, but also have to deal with the miserable conditions they have set - you can study with us, but we want your money first. Feels almost disrespectful in a way. I nearly asked "are you joking?" when hearing the funding details. Hopefully my waitlist PhD offer comes through... if not, would anyone consider taking on an unfunded MA? I've heard talk about it on this website and have heard from many that it's a very bad deal. BC is a big deal for me, but I'm not sure if it's worth 50k+ in debt when I get out.

  2. Quick question - first, congrats to those admitted to BC today! I also applied but don't have a letter in the mail today. I logged onto the application portal and saw a new section about applying for financial aid. Any idea what this means?

Edit - I was on an old page. No one reported a BC admit today. Still - does the new existence of a financial aid section for the 2016-2017 year mean something?

Just as I suspected, the U of Toronto post wasn't real. I just received this from their Graduate Administrator:

    Dear PhD applicants:

Greetings from the Department of Political Science.

Because many of you have been wondering, I am sending this email to confirm our timeframe for response to our PhD applicants.  We have our admissions meeting tomorrow and will send out our first round of offers early next week.  If you are being admitted in the first round you will hear from us by Tuesday of next week.    We will email  all remaining applicants between Tuesday and  the end of next week.  This includes applicants who are being waitlisted or refused admission.  Unfortunately, we won’t have a ranked waitlist so we are unable to let applicants know where you stand on the waitlist.  We give our admitted applicants  two weeks from the date of our offer to reply and at the end of this time the admissions committee will revisit the waitlist and decide on further offers.

I hope this helps.   Unfortunately I may not be able to reply to responses to this email due to email traffic on other fronts but I just wanted to let you all know our timing.  If you for some reason you are no longer interested in being considered for admission please send a note to confirm.  Thank you for your patience.

I also found it fishy, and not to mention that once I had posted about Toronto two more acceptances somehow appeared. Could be legit, but I also received the same email. Here's to hearing back by Tuesday!

Word word. The anxious email refreshing is starting to wear on me.

When I saw someone post that acceptances would be going out today I found it a bit odd. It could be the case that everyone who will been accepted have been, or perhaps those who were accepted today simply haven't/don't post on GC. OR today just wasn't the day. Though it's still not COB in south bend....

Hey Guys, do you have any information about Notre dame? Have they already contacted all the accepted?

    Thanks!

I'm wondering too. They seem to have sent out a few acceptances and rejections. Though, as I'm sure you're aware, on the results search page people have been saying formal acceptance letters will be emailed tomorrow. Can anyone claim one of the posts - either admit or otherwise? Fingers crossed for both of us!

Unless you are on a waitlist...

What does everyone think the etiquette is on asking for an update on your status? I would also like to go to visiting students day, even if I am still in waitlist limbo, just so I can make an informed choice should I be given the decision.

    I second this.

I can tell you from personal experience that it's not any easier to balance the stress of an application cycle with a full-time job, especially one where people aren't supposed to know that you're applying (until it's settled) ;)

And I thought I was the oldest here :) I've been out of my MA for four years now, and also had a gap between BSc and MA.

I can imagine. This isn't easy anywhere! I am beginning to sweat a little, as I've received rejections and implied rejections across the board with the exception of a waitlist. My dilemma is - do I accept the waitlist should I get off of it, even if I'm sure that another program would be better for me? Or do I not risk the opportunity I have and just get started? I'm still in undergrad but I feel ancient, like I need to get to work on the PhD ASAP.

  8. I'm a theory concentration. My area of interest is in the theoretical foundations of modern liberal democracy and the interplay between liberal thought and technology.

I'm waiting on 7 schools! Received a waitlist from Davis and it's been silence from everyone else. Luckily none of my other schools seem to have reported much of anything! Hoping for Georgetown, Notre Dame, and maybe others this week... spooky.

Why do you assume that not hearing means it will be a rejection? Many people in this forum have this mentality as well. I think it is very early to jump to a conclusion and not hearing is a good indicator at this point.

Oh no, what I meant was that many have been rejected from MSU today. Meaning I'm afraid I'll be on that list as it rolls out! I am, though, of the mind that no news is at least not bad news, and perhaps implies some good news to come. Positive vibes!
