  1. I want to apply for a PhD in public policy/ public administration. I'm an average candidate, with average stats (1 year of work experience in a private sector/ multinational corporation, 310 on the GRE, MPA from Syracuse University Maxwell). What maybe boosts my application is being a girl from a developing country, and having a high graduate GPA (3.9). What would be some safety and super safety schools that might fully fund me?
  2. I'm relocating to the US for my master's degree. I want to make a few travel plans in advance, but am finding it kinda hard. What happens where I'm from is, we have domestic websites where you plug in your location, destination and flight dates, and you get a list of all the relevant flights from airlines serving that route. Tried googling similar websites for the US, but haven't managed to get any concrete results. So if someone could share a list of domestic US airlines, or a website that works along the same lines, either would be really helpful. Thanks! =)
  3. I have a kind-of-weird question about English. .-. I was taught Oxford English/ the Queen’s English, when learning the English language. I am attending an American grad school this fall.. Will I be expected to use American English for my coursework? I know there isn’t a huge difference between the two, but there are so many little things and nuances that set them apart. Might sound like a silly or obvious question to some people, but I’ve never lived in an English-speaking country before, so I really have no clue. Will I be expected to use American spellings, vocabulary, style etc. in my US coursework? Will I be corrected if I use Oxford English? Would really appreciate any help or tips!
  4. From my experience, I think it means they want people who will be able to go and do big, important things. Change the world, in some significant, measurable, tangible way. I feel they're looking at your track record to see if you've shown yourself capable of doing such stuff - stuff that has an impact on the world, in a real, demonstrable way. No school (especially schools with big brand names and prestige to maintain) wants what they see as not-amazing alumni. They want to be able to own and market their alumni. So, say, Harvard Law can point to Obama and say, look! The first African-American president in the history of the United States graduated from here! They're looking for people they can - with some certainty - predict great things of. That's it, really, the leadership stuff. In my opinion, of course.
  5. I understand much of this forum is partial to academics, yet I'm surprised at finding so little discussion on this particular topic. For people going to grad school in a different city/ country, how are you planning to handle romantic relationships? For people already in/ having graduated grad school, how did your relationships work out? I'm specifically looking for what people did - long-distance, take a break, breakup altogether - in cases where you couldn't see each other for months, or even a year. I'm trying to get a feel of how others managed, was it even possible to manage, what difficulties were faced, did things fall apart etc. (and if they did fall apart, there's the whole question of if you think that was a bad way to start grad school.) Thanks in advance for sharing. ^__^
  6. Wow, thanks for the great responses everyone. She's found this all so helpful. You guys are the best. ^__^ MusMusculus, out of curiosity, how was it like, going back to undergrad at 25? Was it difficult or uncomfortable? I myself can't imagine going back to undergrad, because I think I'd feel awkward/ like a misfit. More power to you for having the guts to follow your passion!
  7. Syracuse Maxwell MPA vs. Indiana Bloomington SPEA MPA.. Not factoring in funding, which has the better program? Which has the better brand name? I'm an international student and will return to my home country after completing my MPA, so not asking in terms of job offers in the US. I'm asking in terms of a high-quality education, a strong alumni network, and brand name/ prestige. Thank you for any help. Would be really, really appreciated.
  8. She understands that, and wants to know that if her best shot (the kind where she can actually make a difference) is to go back to undergrad, would Adcoms even consider her? Given her really unique profile and background, the fact that she's a 26-year old with an MBA from a prestigious university etc. Is this even doable for her?
  9. Hi, I'm asking for a friend. She majored in business in undergrad, then went on to do an MBA. Now - for personal reasons, affected/ inspired by someone's illness - she wants to change her field and go into biology. It's really important to her, but she has no bio background. Very smart girl, undergrad and MBA from prestigious universities, GRE/ GMAT scores in the 95th percentile etc. She wants to know if she's eligible to apply to grad schools for biology-related fields, or if going back to undergrad is a good idea. She's not thinking in terms of jobs/ money/ time she'd lose, so that's a non-issue.
  10. Which has a greater quant-focus (looking to move away from quantitative) Which is harder to get into, with no work experience? Thoughts? Pros and cons of both? Anything, guiz?
  11. Hi. Short question: I have been selected for a funding by an institute that will apply to four schools on my behalf. I get the funding ONLY if one of these four schools accept me. Can anyone take a look at my profile, and tell me what my chances of getting into these four programs are/ should I consider other programs? Longer version: GRE: 164 V, 154 Q, 5.5 AWA CGPA: 3.55/ 4 Work Experience: Applying straight from undergrad. Internships with Teach for All network, a health organization, and an educational institution. Female applicant from an LCD Applied to: Syracuse MPA, Georgetown MPP, IU Bloomington MPA, Cornell MPA I NEED to get into one of these four.. am I competitive? If not, I can have one of these replaced by an institution of my choice (where I have a greater chance of getting in.) Which program should I replace, and with what? Not looking for definitive answers. Maybe a general discussion on which MPA/ MPP programs accept what kind of candidates. Especially looking for a program where the trend has been that work experience isn't one of the major deciding factors. Thanks.
