  1. I already heard back from them (2 weeks ago) letting me know that I got an interview. I just havent heard anything since then. And they mentioned in their email that they wanted to arrange travel so to contact them back ASAP. I am just worried my email was somehow missed or something. I would have expected to hear about making travel arrangements by now..however they were out all last week and the office was closed so I do not want to annoy them.
  2. Did you ever hear back from UCSB?
  3. Has anyone else on here heard anything additional from UCSB after that first correspondence? Would you call or email? And what should I say? "Just checking in, wanted to make sure you still know I exist!" I don't want to annoy them, but I also feel weird that I haven't heard anything at all in over 2 weeks now. I know its probably not the case, but I am worried something happened and they forgot about me.
  4. While everyone is on the topic of calling schools, I responded to interview invites from schools like 2 weeks ago saying I could go (yes I know over Christmas), but haven't heard anything back since responding. I wasnt worried last week since most offices were closed, but now I am concerned that my email got lost or something. Should I contact them again to make sure they got my confirmation or should I just not worry about it and give them more time? What would you guys do? How long should I wait before sending a followup email? I just really want to start scheduling travel and all of that so I can stop worrying about interviews and worry about scheduling haha.
  5. Is it weird that I am a little bit jealous? I want to know so bad about the outcomes of my applications that I would welcome some rejections (with interviews thrown in) right now!
  6. I haven't decided on how I will get there. I will have to talk to them and see what would be best for them and for me. I am still awaiting an email from them about travel specifics. I might drive since it's only about 6 hours from me and I could make a long weekend out of it and visit friends from college in the area either before or after, but we will see. I went to undergrad near UCR. It is a decent school but certainly not the best in CA (Stanford, UCSF, Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD all come to mind). With that being said, UCR has a good reputation. I believe according to US News Reports UCR is top 75 in the nation for Bio (for whatever that's worth). Also, the CMDB dept is very small. Looking at their faculty and current students, I am assuming they only admit 5-8 students a year or so (give or take obviously) I guess what I am saying is that there are schools in CA that I did not apply to since they were not to my personal standard for myself but UCR clearly met all of my personal requirements for a school. I have pretty high standards and I would be very happy to go to UCR and am very excited to attend the UCR interview/visitation weekend. It should also be noted however that UCR is also not one of my reach schools, I felt more comfortable about being able to get into UCR than some of the other schools.
  7. Im in Northern CA. They didn't talk specifics at all but indicated that some of the expenses would be covered.
  8. They certainly have a lot going on. I wouldn't worry. They told me to get back to them ASAP to set up travel, which I did (Dec 23rd), and they haven't even contacted me back yet to finalize the details of travel. I wouldn't worry if I were you. My application status still says under review anyways (which worries me...but I shouldn't worry too much about it).
  9. I called a few days before submitting to make sure the rest of my materials were in on time and they made it sound like it wasn't a big deal if I didn't make it by the dec 1 deadline. I would't worry about it. I think the dec 1 deadline was just a deadline they put for the ad com to go through the first set of apps. My guess is that they still are going to extend invites in the next few weeks to additional people that were between the dec 1 early deadline and the jan 5th deadline. I am not even completely sure what the early deadline was for. I do know for sure the office was closed last week. They reopened today and are probably looking at additional applications this week. I wouldn't worry if I were you.
  10. I certainly do not know for sure, but by the way they made it sound in the directions, I would expect 2 separate emails. I could be wrong though, that was just my interpretation. Congrats by the way!
  11. I applied to CMDB at UCR and CMB at UCI. I know that UCR had an early decision deadline of Dec. 1 which is why I applied so early. If it makes you feel better, I haven't heard back from UCR since receiving the original email in December. My guess is they closed down the office for winter break and didn't worry about emails and contacting people/setting up travel. The email said something about being out of the office until January 4th. I have been a bit nervous since I hadn't heard anything at all from them after that first email inviting me to visit. I am figuring (and hoping) that it just means they have a lot going on and will be back communicating with potential students soon. I have a few interview invites but don't have any travel actually booked yet....so I am still anxious until I get plane tickets booked and travel arrangements made.
  12. I actually hadn't ever even been in snow until I was a freshman in college... I would have had a tough time with the snow. I think I am going to save the snow and cold for my post-doc years to make them just that much more fun.
  13. Now I remember why I only applied to west coast schools -California Resident
  14. Has anyone that got an interview at UCSB MCDB heard back after the first initial email inviting you to interview? I responded to the email on the 23rd (2 days after receiving it) saying I was available, yet I still have not heard back regarding travel or confirmation or anything. They told me to let them know by the 28th so I am worried that perhaps they didn't get my email. I was expecting to hear back about travel accommodations by now or something. I also know the office was closed last week, but they sent out additional invitations for interviews last week too. I guess I am just trying to figure out how long to wait before emailing to follow up. From what I have heard, schools are usually pretty quick to set up travel.
  15. Pretty good guesses so far. I ended up applying to 2 extra safety schools by the way, but... So far I have interviews at UCI, UCSB and UCR but haven't heard from the other 3 on that list. Only time will tell if that I get a late interview or if I get a rejection. All in all I am happy where I am. I guess I didn't even need to apply to those last 2 safety schools. And don't get worried or give up too soon. I have a friend who last year had similar stats as me. She didn't get a single interview until January and then suddenly got 4 in a week. She was accepted to 3/4 schools. Also I heard back from UCSB and UCR but I got both of those in really early (like mid November) so maybe that helps.
  16. That was my baseball number in high school.... So... I just kinda put it on everything. Glad you are doing something productive on this forum.
  17. I heard back from them last week. I think emails went out on the 22nd. They told me they wanted me to respond within a week to let them know if I could attend the interview weekend. I responded to them but have not yet heard any additional information since then.
  18. Good Idea, I think I responded to the schools on the 22nd and 23rd. I am sure that they were gone for the holiday, but I still am nervous.
  19. Have those of you with interviews heard back from your schools since accepting your interviews? I received interview emails with directions on how to respond/accept the invite. After about 24 hours or so, depending on the school, I responded saying that I am delighted to accept the offer to interview and that I am available on weekend x or y or whatever. Unfortunately I never received a confirmation email or any sort of correspondence since then. I know that it is unlikely that my email got lost or anything....but I really just want to have these interview weekends scheduled and planned so that I can stop worrying about them. Anyone else in the same boat? Should I be worried?
  20. So excited (and relieved). Just heard back from my first school! Got an interview. It's on a popular weekend for the schools I applied for but I am going to take it since its the first school I heard back from and since it's one of my top 3!
  21. I'm totally in the same boat as you. I'm from California and I stuck with CA schools because I really like where I live and I don't want to have to leave quite yet. I have a 3.25 GPA, but a 3.4 in my Jr/Sr. year. I have publications and all sorts of posters/orals and great LORs. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by my lack of contact from schools yet, but I am hoping that I get an interview or two in the second round once some others have turned them down.
  22. I'm a low GPA with lots of experience and an industry job, so its nice to know people like myself are getting interviews. I haven't heard back but only 4/8 schools have gotten back to anyone so far (according to the survey). I also have a friend that freaked out last year because she wasnt getting early interviews, but she ended up getting interviews (and acceptances) to schools in January that started inviting in December. So I guess I shouldn't be worried yet. Congrats on the interview though!
  23. I applied there and have not yet heard back.
  24. I applied to this program and still haven't heard anything. I am super hopeful that I will hear back soon though!
  25. I found a spelling/biology mistake in one of mine like 3 days after submitting it! I had a massive brain fart and instead of saying genera (pl. genus) I said genre (like music or movies or whatever). I know.... I am so stupid.... I told my PI and he basically told me I was an idiot. Also, it was in the SOP for my top choice! Luckily the school allowed me to upload new copies of my SOP until they reviewed it. I had a massive freak out when I saw that. What's even worse is that not only did I miss that mistake when editing, but two of my friends in grad school and 2 other friends with BS degrees in Bio also missed it....
