  1. I applied to Boston College and the deadline was January 2nd. I took the GRE again on December 18th, since I got a 163 in the quantitative reasoning, and I needed at least a 166, and my scores reached them by the deadline. I also paid ETS to send my TOEFL scores on December, 28th, and they gave me a estimated shipping date to January 1st. My TOEFL scores were processed by Boston College just on January 6th. I contacted the Graduate Program which I was applying and they told me that they would start the review process just on January 18th, so there would be no problem with late scores. You are retaking the GRE in advance, so I would not worry about. Also, there may be a window between the deadline and the date the committee will start the review of applications. I you have any concerns, you should contact the departments which you are applying and ask about late arrivals.
  2. Which university rejected you application? I was fine until read your post, now I am very worried. The report date of my scores was January, 1st, but the deadline of one university is Jan, 2nd. I have already contacted them, but I think I will just receive an answer on monday. It seems that ETS sends the scores eletronically, so I do not understand why they said they have not received your scores. I really hope they you try to process all scores right after the deadline, so the adcoms will have a complete application. Good Luck!
  3. I studied during graduate studies. Initially when I was taking two classes of Advanced Econometrics and after while writing my master's thesis, and I had enough time. You can take the test 15 days before the first deadline, since ETS takes at most 15 days to check your test. My advice of taking 2 months before the deadline is for the case you fail on your first try, and then you have the opportunity of ratake 15 or 20 days before the deadlines.
  4. I scored 170, studied about 5 months, 40 to 100 questions a day, by the following material. 5 lb. - solved all 1100 questions 4 times. On the 3rd and 4th time I was able to complete the book in 12 days. After this, I mastered all kind of quentions and discovered the fastest way to answer a question. Kaplan - there are 6 practice tests on-line available for those who buy the book, but there is a way to have it for free. Google it. Magoosh - I solved the set of 640 questions twice. ETS official materials - I found on internet 2 official guides, with 3 practice tests and some questions. Take it. Also, take the Powerprep II by ETS. As I said, I used to solve 40 to 100 questions a day, nothing more than 1 hour a day, and scored a perfect score. Be ready to take the test at least 2 months before the deadline, you may fail on your first try. I used to score 168, 169 and 170 in practice tests, includind those of kaplan, which are much harder than the real test, and scored 163 on my first try. I was extreamly nervous. 21 days after, I scored 170 without a single hour of study, and I was still able to submit my scores before the deadlines.
  5. Hi, I am applying for some Ph.D. programs in Economics and I could not find any information about the weight admissions committees give to certain components of an application. I have just taken the GRE and scored 170 in the quantitative reasoning. In the verbal, I got a 147. For my field, only quantitative score matters. I am applying to Indiana University, Penn State, University of Virginia, Washington University and University of Iowa. They are between top 25 and top 50 best programs in Economics in USA according to US News. So, what is the weight of GRE in adimissions decisions? Also, if possible, I would like you to judge the rest of my application and say what are my chances. I have a B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Economics in a great university in Brazil (Federal Unuversity of Ceara). Received magna cum laude in M.Sc. worked as T.A. for 4 years, as Researcher assistant for 2 years in a worldwide recognized laboratory, and I was awarded with scholarships of the Braziliam Ministry of Education during B.Sc. and Brazilian Ministry of Science during M.Sc. I think I got good recommendations. Also, I scored 99 on Toefl. Thank you, guys!
