Anyone else offered a travel stipend to visit campus for admitted students weekend? Wasn't planning on going, but I'm now reconsidering!

Yup, nice surprise!  Brings down my international flight cost a bit... it's nice to be wooed!

  2. Also deciding between Fletcher and SAIS (DC).  I have about 3-4 years' work experience.  About the same $$$ offered at both ($20k/year at Fletcher, $22.5k/year at SAIS).  Will go to both the Open Houses and check them out in person - only so much you can glean from the website.  I'm interested in international development, which seems to be strong at both schools.  A little anxious about all the econ at SAIS, but I think it's a good opportunity to gain some quant skills - really avoided quantitative courses in undergrad, which I somewhat regret.  If anyone has any insight on their respective advantages/disadvantages, I would appreciate it!

Folks, try to take a step back and think this through before jumping to conclusions. I'm seeing a lot of wild speculations on these threads that are connecting dots that aren't necessarily related. The Princeton WWS blog specifically states that decisions come out on the 11th. So there's that.

In addition, of the three posters who mention on this thread that they have received admissions decisions from WWS, two have no identifiable information about which program they applied to and the third clearly applied to the MPP program, as it is noted in his/her profile tag. Furthermore, the sole "admitted" decision listed in the results page for WWS is for the MPP program. Let's assume WWS is going to stick to the information they provided us and trust that MPA decisions come out March 11. I think it probably makes sense to assume they mean what they say and take them by their word. A lot of people will post admissions results in a thread devoted to a particular program, even if they applied to a different program within the same school. I'm fairly certain that's what has happened here. It's indeed possible that some/all MPP decisions have come out, but I don't see how that necessarily has any bearing on MPA decisions.

I also think it's worth noting that it makes little sense to assume a lack of any e-mail pertaining to any decision implies rejection. The blog also states that you will receive an e-mail if you're admitted, wait listed or rejected. If you haven't received any e-mail at all, I don't think you can validly assume any of the aforementioned yet. I believe there are plenty of reasons to still be hopeful!

Thanks!  I will be truly shocked if I get accepted but I was still feeling pretty bummed after reading this thread... based in East Africa, so I'm anxious all day (and night) even though I KNOW nothing will be online until the end of my workday!

  4. Have any early notification acceptances gotten notification of funding?  I imagine there's probably no letter forthcoming, but here's hoping... congrats to the new admits!

  5. Did everyone get a confirmation email that their application is complete/under review?  Did not receive although app was complete, thought I would wait to see if there were any emails from admissions about any missing documents but now am getting a little anxious.

    Hi,

I have two topics in my mind. One relates to the current work I am doing and the entire story line, but this one is multidimensional and will need more than 200 words if I have to do justice to it. The other one is not directly related to my SOP, it is also extremely out of the box  but I think it's quite narrow and simple and can be achieved with minimum effort. What do you suggest? Which one should I write about? Also, could you please share your GRE scores with me? Not sure if my scores are competitive.

    Thanks

@MH2 Also agree with the responses above... I chose a topic that I was knowledgeable about so just did some fact-checking and pulling relevant statistics.  The topic was in the sector i'm interested in but not in my geographic area of interest - ultimately I felt in the short space it was something I could write well on and showed my passion/knowledge of the issue.  For me, the key was to not really write a policy paper - as I did for Johns Hopkins/Princeton - but rather sort of write an 'elevator pitch' on why the policy is important and a few supporting reasons for my position.

@MPPant I also think if you can shorten that is ideal, 700 words is a lot considering the other prompts.  But ultimately no one knows your application better than you - if you really think it adds something vital to your application that's not there otherwise, go for it.  I used the optional essay just to give some clarifications on my transcript - explain some course names and why two were pass/fail and not graded - it was under a page.  I was admitted to MIA early notification round, 169V, 159Q, 4.0AW.

I was just rejected by Columbia-SIPA. Considering SIPA's relatively high acceptance rate, this makes me particularly concerned about the quality of my profile, since I'm hoping to get admitted to top schools for fellowship funding and get near/full funding at lower ranked schools. My essays have changed significantly since my submission to SIPA, but does SIPA's rejection mean that I realistically have no chance of getting full tuition funding at any school? Or that I have no real chance of getting into a top-ranked school? I've been admitted to Indiana Bloomington, but with funding decisions coming out only in March, that admit doesn't have any real implications on my viability as an applicant yet.

I'm an applicant coming straight out of college with a STEM degree (3.76 GPA, GRE: 164V, 165Q, 5.5 writing). Quick profile highlights: I'm graduating after two years in undergrad (graduated high school in 2014, finishing college in 2016). I've had research internships with materials on Boko Haram sent to the State Department, one with a think tank in Bolivia focusing on teenage pregnancy, and a current one with a consulting company for Afghanistan. I've had over two dozen publications in outlets like the Huffington Post, The Hill, Cornell International Affairs Review, and etc. My work has resulted in public retractions for original sources cited by leading outlets like the Washington Post, and has engaged organizations like Reform Immigration 4 America. I have macro/micro economics, calculus I/II, statistics, and a lot of history coursework through AP/IB scores.

Bolded schools are where I'm hoping to get funding from, regardless of their admissions selectivity. Other schools are intended to be paired with nationally competitive fellowships.

Applying: IHEID (MDev), SAIS (MA), HKS (MPP), UT Austin (MPaff), Chicago (MSCAPP), Princeton WWS (MPA), USC (MPP). Apps to finish: Duke (MPP), Carnegie Mellon (MSPPM), Yale Jackson (MA), MIT-DUSP (IDG group) (MCP). Additional apps pending.

Rejected: Columbia SIPA MPA, Cambridge MPP.

    Accepted: IU-Bloomington MPA. Funding pending.

14 schools?!?! Phew!  Yes I think definitely get some work experience - especially since you've completed undergrad in two years! Most schools want to see that you have some (international) experience to contribute to the classroom,  as well as just the maturity and direction you gain from a few years in "the real world."  Best of luck... and breathe!
