  1. The wait for Columbia's French killing anyone yet? It looks like last year they sent decisions this week, but... no dice! Also, have any of you considered applying to facultés in France? ENS has a séléction internationale, but only 20 students are admitted each year (of which 2 were from the US last year!). The problem is that a) there's little fundung and you have to go to France near the end of summer to take the entrance exam (le concours). I'm really tempted to take that chance, because frankly I don't know if I want to be stuck in US institutions for the next 6 years with just the slight hope that I'll spend a year abroad, even if it is a year at the ENS. Good luck! Colin
  2. Hello, I got the phone call on the 4th of February around 6PM from Howard Bloch. I'm interested in the 19th century novel, and the intersections of literature and history, the novel and the sciences, generic studies, and "close readings" of texts (à l'instar de Barthes, Genette, etc.). Maurice Samuels told me they were the first French department in the US to send decisions, and frankly it caught me off guard how early I got the phone call. It also caught me off guard that it was a positive response! I'm also applying to Columbia, U Chicago, and Harvard, haven't heard anything yet from them. Good luck, Colin
