vialy got a reaction from fencergirl in Northwestern University 2016
Hi everyone! I'll be going for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. NU wasn't at the top of my list before, but I talked with my future advisor and visited a few weeks ago - changed my life. I love NU already.
Any other girls looking for roommates, please PM me! It's really daunting trying to find a place by myself without being certain about the roommate situation. I want to live closer to campus the first year (definitely won't be driving).
I might be an engineer but it's great to see so many historians on here. In another life I would've gone into art history or something to do with languages. I'm trying to become trilingual in Chinese, Korean and Japanese.

Here's some of the housing information I gathered from my correspondence with current graduate students:

Half of the grad student population lives in Chicago; most of these students are in northern Edgewater or Rogers Park. Lakeview and Lincoln Park are also saturated with graduate students, but less so, since these areas are further from campus and more expensive. Housing near the Belmont stop in Lakeview should not be difficult to find as September approaches. If you opt to live in Rogers Park, it is best to live between the Loyola and Morse Red Line stops. This area is not part of the seedier locations of Rogers Park, and it grants access to both the Loyola library and the Sheridan NU shuttle stop. I'll inquire about financing student housing today via email, and I'll make sure to update this thread with more housing information when I get back from the campus visit.

I accepted Northwestern's offer for a PhD! I am extremely satisfied with the school, surroundings and the advisor that interviewed me.
I've already turned down Virginia Tech's offer and will be turning down GaTech, Purdue, and UW-Madison (good luck to everyone waitlisted at these schools). Already been rejected from Cornell and UCB (I applied for MS here and they asked if I would like to join the MEng in Product Design instead but I said no). Still waiting to hear back from UMD, UT Austin, and Carnegie Mellon.

Thanks, guys. After my panicking/near breakdown, I talked to some of my friends already in grad school and that helped me calm down a lot. I think you're right about the deadlines and reviewing starting after the holidays.
I've heard from two schools so far (nothing concrete yet, but it's good news), so I'm hopeful. Good luck to you all!

I am a domestic applicant and one of my applications was considered "incomplete" due to a missing but totally unnecessary TOEFL score. I called up the school and apparently they still reviewed the application because their online system isn't able to distinguish student who do or do not need to submit a TOEFL report. So I wouldn't worry too much about it

Similar situation. Procrastination and some urgent work in between. Submitted almost all applications on or one/two days before the deadlines. Fortunately I'd sent my GRE/TOEFL scores in advance to most so they ended up getting matched immediately and they processed my application, except one place that delayed it by a week. Don't worry too much about deadlines.  For mid/late December deadlines, I don't think they start looking at the application till after holiday season anyway.
I think typos are easily forgivable. I managed to get through most apps without major disasters, except the wrong country in one form (which they were kind enough to rectify) and two stray punctuation marks in one of my SoPs.
    Best of luck!
